Large scale Lambos/Ferraris

Recommended Posts

I got a little cash burning a hole in my paypal account, and I've been surfing ebay looking for something interesting. I found some larger scale (1/16, 1/12) Lambos, and Ferrari's for a decent price, and was wondering which would be worth my time. I know everyone is going to say Tamiya, but that's to rich for my blood. The kits that I've been looking at are from the 80s-90s of the Testarossas, Countachs, and some 512's, and F40's from Fujimi, Testros, Monogram, Italeria, and Revell. Just wondering what your opinions on some of these kits are?

If you like the Testarossa, the Monogram edition of it isn't THAT bad.......it does not have brake rotors in the kit and some other detail related items but that would never stop me from getting it. I bought one anyways......besides I think I got my 1/12 Testarossa for $22.00 shipped. WELL worth that price! I do have the 1/12 Protar F40 and that is another story.....more like a toy than anything. The 275 GTB from Revell, stay away from it. Totally wrong on every account!

You wont go wrong with Fujimi.......especially the Enthusiast series!

Fujimi, Tamiya, Hasegawa all good Japanese model companies.

I really like the Fujimi's I have done and am going to try a 1/16 Enthusiast kit F40...these are supposed to have more detail than the norm kits

That might be something to look at.

Have a peek at MFH...Japanese company doing crazy stuff and stupid expensive at 1/12 scale..but one day:)

Looking at some of these Fujimi kits, I noticed a lot of them that have what looks like gear assembly for a wind up car. Was this an option, and did it effect the overall look the detail of the car?

I mentioned in my PM, but yes there was the option to have it be motorized and for the front and rear lights to illuminate. The motor parts don't affect the overall look once built, but it does create some difference in how the engine and transmission look compared to the real thing (mostly just the lower section).

Just hang in there, be patient and keep looking

Don't get sucked into an E Bay bidding war...been there done that

Have a look at garage and estate sales...you never know what people have and sometimes neither do they

Even think about some partially built large kits that you can disassemble and breathe new life into

One of my dream kits is a Pocher Ferrari F40 in 1/18 scale

Good luck with your search , keep us posted

I'll keep my cool. I've kind of given up on garage sales as of lately it's all been baby BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH, or old people stuff. I remember when I was a kid (in the 80s-90s) getting quite a few good models from garage sales.

There has to be some old farts selling off their kits somewhere.....I am closer to being an old fart than I'd like to admit

That made me  C'mon Scott, you can't be as old as me..... :)

Back on topic, sorry Kristopher, My main experience with the larger scale kits is limited to mostly Tamiya and of course Revell-Monogram (Camaro, Corvette)..

Tamiya is hard to top with regard to scale "accuracy", and even they make compromises in a lot of areas in my opinion.

Good thing is, it leaves you a lot of scope for adding your own bits and super-detailing, if that is something you desire. ;)

I have often looked at some of the more exotic (Lambo's, Ferrari etc..) but have yet to bite at one....

Like Scott said, just keep your eyes on eBay. I had a saved search that I kept checking in on for about a year and a 16th scale F40 popped up for 35 bux and free shipping. I figured nah, that'll never stay that low but I threw my max bid on it and let it ride. Picked it up for 35 bux! I've found that patience is the key to that site. If you're in a hurry to get something you will get sucked into them bidding wars and pay way too much.

The funny thing is the last couple of years I've thrown a couple kits into the garage sales my family organizes, $5 for each kit, and in three years I've sold one. These are fairly new kits. Corvettes and Camaros, even a Viper. Figured kids would dig these.

I wonder if I could convince the wife not to go to Ohio this weekend to see her brother, and to celebrate our anniversary to get that Enzo...I'd even paint it with the pink paint for her

I only had a reserve price of $200.00

You should try that. It will be as good as me telling my wife I'm selling all my model stuff :)

From experience here's how I rate ones I know about:

!/16th Fujimi Porsche 959 is very good IMHO

!/12th Mono/revell Testarossa is okay, but toylike. Could be worked into a nice piece with some Aftermarket.

!/16th Revell Camaro/firebird  Very toylike GREAT tires though.
