brett
My local clubs having a build a hot wheels night in sept where you can pick any hot wheels you'ld like and build it. Now me being me I couldnt choose a "normal "one so I chose the Mid Mill. whats that you ask ? started with this very disappointing gem ,good thing I didnt need much of it mocked up out of the box nah chopped up and mocked up now this was yesterdays progress
brett
todays progress included throwing out(to the parts bin, I dont throw nothing away) those ugly cutaway front guards and using a set from an AMT 32 5 window and started on the frame got to beef up the frame but that is the final ride hight.Think I'll go for a ladder bar rear suspension its not suitable for leafs (easiest) and too long for a four link imo. rear shot Edited July 22, 2010 by brett

Dr. Cranky
One jaw-dropping word: WOW!
torinobradley
That is AWESOME! There are so many HotWheels that would make good models, in my opinion anyway... I have a Sooo Fast project in the bench rotation. Started with the ZZ Top '34 and went to town. I can throw a pic or two up if you like. How are you going to manage the transaxle? I went with an MPC Coyote (GT40 Mk 4) rear suspension since the build had to be a pre-'70s. I'll be watching this one!

brett
First off thanks for all the nice comments. Secondly a cbo is a great idea as theres heaps more I'ld like to build but........(everyones always gotta have a but t right?) as this ones got its own thread already I'ld like to keep this one that way. Torinobradley ,start a thread man or start the build off I'm sure lots of us would like to see it (I would). Heck I might even start another just to join it lol. mediamonk most of well half defineatly of my local club collect them too. Personally I have a few hundred but I stick to mainly muscle car,hot rod and drag with the occasional oddball like this one. Well its saturday morning here so I'm heading out to the shed soon to do some more.
CrewDawg15
Great idea! Is that a geared transfer case from the tranny to the axle? Hot Wheels do have some wild designs...a CBP would be awesome.
Brokentail58
I have that Hot Wheels hanging in the man cave. I love Hot Wheel builds.
brett
frames done, well gonna putty up the joints tomorrow but the designs done two old timing covers stuck together are now my transfer case , using the kits diff as its pretty chunky gas bottle mockup and exhaust mocked up going around to my father inlaws to use his lathe to make up the gas bottles sometime mid week

charlzrocks
Really great idea for a build! I like that you are taking inspiration from a Hot Wheels car. It looks fast as hell!!
brett
Thanks charlz. Well I think it may even be ready for offiicial primer, added the forgotten sun visor (twas the front cowl off something AMT). Lots of unseen work on the frame and front guards area and started on the floor and firewall. and put 1st coat of paint on wheels to match the smaller version made up the blower tiedown plate and built it up with some sheet stock for the carbs to sit on and made the scoop a little taller so now that everythings almost done I can start painting and detailing the engine. (as a side note, the engine came from a box of stuff I brought,I'm asuming its a monster truck engine as its slightly bigger than normal engines but still styrene. I do know the guy had one at one stage)
Junkman
This is so nice, I'm tempted to do one too! I would like to go top fuel behind the cabin, though.

brett
This is so nice, I'm tempted to do one too! I would like to go top fuel behind the cabin, though. Usually so would I but the point of the exercise (apart from getting some of the club building again) was to get it as CLOSE to the hot wheels as possible. Thanks guys. brett
Oh yes, I understand. You are doing a superb job replicating the Hot Wheels setup. thanks man! one step closer. Color finished sanding, primering then chucked some colour on this evening. Main body is going to need a little more sanding (paint highlighted some stuff that primer helped hide) and the blues a bit too dark. But thats ok the main thing I want to take away from this build is tiding up body work issues ,something I've nearly always rushed with before. going to the inlaws tomorrow night to machine up some aluminum for a couple of projects as well as this one (gas bottles fo back)
brett
well got one bottle that fits great and one that will be turned into something else lol. Did get another couple of things made up for another project so wasnt a complete waste. Anyway paint and a couple of other things....... Paint is mainly Dupont lacquer whilst the orange is enamel. Masked off the lighter blue on doors then spayed the darker blue. Just as it flashed with the tape still on I did the orange (with brush) ,as soon as one side was finished (orange) I pulled off the mask then repeated. Nothing lifted which shouldnt which was a huge releif, hoping I'll be able to touch up orange where needed later.
Greg Myers
. . . and you look at those Hot Wheels all the time thinking : " That looks cool, but it'll never work".
brett
had a bit of a setback yesterday, when I was clearing it with my ex trusty coathanger poked through from the back window it poped the back piller joints . So I finished clearing and then reglued today. Theres practically no putty in the whole chop so have sanded over the join and will mask it off and respray in a couple of days. Did get some plug wireing and the blower tiedown straps done. Now should I plumb the carbs? I feel that if I do then I'll have to plumb the nitrous bottles at the back which is getting in way deeper than I'd intended to
