Ron Hamilton Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 I have been working on the Revell '72 Olds Cutlass. I was a little disturbed that they did not choose to do a proper 442 Grille, so I did my own. I modified the kit piece by removing the Cutlass Supreme Grilles, and adding a proper set of 442 Grilles form an old JoHan promo. As you can see, the configuration is of a '71, as my build is going to be a '71 convertible, so I can do the red inner fenders and the W27 rear axle from the kit. I still have to remove the rocker panel mouldings from the body, as no '71 or '72 442 had them from the factory. The second build is going to be a '72 Hurst Olds Hardtop. I used an AMT '70 Monte Carlo Hardtop Roof, which I modified the sail panels and rear window area. I still have to add the drip mouldings and vinyl roof mouldings, and do some finish work before I prime it. It was a little harder than I thought, and I am not quite happy with it, but it is pretty close. I should be able to add the mouldings, and maybe put some primer on it soon.
my80malibu Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Ron Why did You use the Monte Carlo roof and not one from a Jo-han 442?
Ron Hamilton Posted January 17, 2010 Author Posted January 17, 2010 Ron Why did You use the Monte Carlo roof and not one from a Jo-han 442? Other than the sail panels and backlite, which I modified, the same roof is used on the Cutlass Supreme Hardtop. Otherwise the only other source would be a very rare MPC '69 through '72 Grand Prix, which had the vinyl roof pattern moulded in.
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Great job, Ron. I will also be building a '72 H/O as a hardtop. Mine will be Mettalic black with the gold H/O decals.
Greg Cullinan Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 Hi Ron,roof looks very good on there. That seems to be a very nice kit cause it looks good plain and unfinished. Thanks
Janne Herajärvi Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) Looks great roof swap going on there I was thinking similar progress to my Olds when i get it Ill hope its not too much for my building skills. Edited January 18, 2010 by Janne Herajärvi
Ron Hamilton Posted January 28, 2010 Author Posted January 28, 2010 I did a little work on the Olds. I added the roof drip, rear window, and vinyl roof mouldings, as well as a coat of primer to check my body work. It seems to be coming along pretty good, but there is still a little work to be done.
Marc @ MPC Motorsports Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Looking good, Ron. If anyone can pull that one off, you can!
rustybill1960 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Excellent Subject! very nice work! thanks for sharing will be watching this build what will you be using as the vinyl? would like to try one later dude
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Great job on the hardtop, bro. You would'nt happen to have a spare junker '70 monte carlo body, would you?
charlie8575 Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Nice work, especially on the coupe. Is there a 1972 4-4-2 grille available, by chance? As I think about it, the more the idea of making a Cutlass Supreme instead of a 4-4-2 with this kit appeals to me, if the grille is already there. Charlie Larkin
Ron Hamilton Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 Excellent Subject! very nice work! thanks for sharing will be watching this build what will you be using as the vinyl? would like to try one later dude In regards to the "vinyl", I can go with either the Model Car Garage Vinyl Roof Kit, Masking Tape, or the Testors' Spray Vinyl Roof system, such as what I used on this '70 Barracuda.
Ron Hamilton Posted January 29, 2010 Author Posted January 29, 2010 Great job on the hardtop, bro. You would'nt happen to have a spare junker '70 monte carlo body, would you? No. I bought a kit just for the roof. The rest of the parts will be used for other projects.

As I think about it, the more the idea of making a Cutlass Supreme instead of a 4-4-2 with this kit appeals to me, if the grille is already there. Charlie Larkin I modified the kit grille by using parts from an original Johan '71 I had. The '72 grille is the same, with the exception of the color of the grille mesh, and a black band on the inner recess of the grille. The modelhaus has the original JoHam Grille and insert available in their line, and if you remove the mounting tangs off of the back of the bumper, it will fit this car with virtually no modification. The only drawback with the old JoHan part, is that the headlamps are moulded in and chromed over, instead of having separate lenses.
Ron Hamilton Posted February 23, 2010 Author Posted February 23, 2010 I did a little work on the Hurst Olds Hardtop. In looking at the body compared to the latest reference photographs I have, The vinyl roof mouldings were wrong, and the rear window was too short. So I removed the mouldings, and enlarged the rear window. I also made up new mouldings for the rear window. Finding an accurate photograph of a '72 Hurst Olds Hardtop is not very easy, as there are quite a few innacurate clones out there. I found a picture which I feel is representative of what was being sold as a Hurst Olds Hardtop, as well as an old Motor Trend Magazine Article about the car. Hurst did the vinyl roof mouldings in a different manner than what the factory did in their vinyl roof applications, to accomodate the deck lid stripes. This is what I hope to end up with. Let me know what you think.
Dragline Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Gosh Ron, if I had your dedication to accuracy I'd have a hole in my stomach. It's guys like you who truly make Replica Stock an actuality instead of an ideal. I'll be watching this unfold so i can learn what it takes to build to your level of integrity. Bob
Ron Hamilton Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 (edited) We are getting closer to the end of this one. Last weekend, I rubbed the paint out, added the kit decals, added the Vinyl Roof, Bare Metaled the car, painted and detailed the interior, and got it up on it's wheels to see where we are on this one. I painted the Vinyl roof on with flat white acrylic. The wheels were detailed with gold paint and the kit decals, and I used a set of old MPC Goodyear Polyglas GT Tires, which I highlited with a gel pen. I still have to detail several aspects of the build, work over the engine, and touch up several areas of this one before I call it finished. Maybe two or three more modeling sessions, and I can go to the next project. Let me know what you think. Edited March 10, 2010 by Ron Hamilton
Ron Hamilton Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 It's getting close on the coupe now. I am doing the engine as a W30 455. Thanks to Cruz for alerting me about the body color filler panels beween the grille and bumpers. Once I get the coupe finished, I would like to start on the convertible, which I am doing as a '71 442 W30/4-speed, with the W27 aluminum rear axle housing and cover, and the red fender liners. The interior will be white trimmed in black, and for the exterior color, I am leaning towards red, with the white stripes.

Ron, there is an additional separate piece for the center of the chromed grill, like a dummy, I scraped it off without knowing this. You should be okay though, it will cover the scraped part anyways!! You see, you can't believe everything I say....

The inner part of the grille frame is painted too, so all you would have to do is to add the filler piece.
cruz Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Great! Hey, where did you get the tires from? They look very good and definitely better than the ones in the kit!!!
Ron Hamilton Posted March 14, 2010 Author Posted March 14, 2010 Great! Hey, where did you get the tires from? They look very good and definitely better than the ones in the kit!!! AMT '71 Duster, MPC Vegas. They are the old MPC solid Goodyear "Polyglas GT" tires. I had to search the parts box for those. They fit the kit's rims perfectly. I white lettered them with a white gel pen.
Dragline Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Outstanding Ron..... I want to see this in person. Make certain you bring it to the next MAMA meeting. I'm sure I'll be there. Bob
Ron Hamilton Posted March 20, 2010 Author Posted March 20, 2010 I finally finished the '72 Hurst Olds Hardtop!!!! Thank you Revell for such a fine kit.
