when i was a young lad, around the '60's, some friends took me to the sand dunes. most of them were v8's back then. the light weight and waterless cars hadn't caught on yet. the v8's were really crude with just a car frame, seats and drive train. someone finally built a tube frame rail and i really liked them. in the '80's a friend sold me some huge tires and rims and i have been thinking about something like this ever since.

i have been seeing the volks rod pick ups people are buildig and thought "how about a drag altered one"
-
awhile back steve sanford drew several vw rods in a hot vw book. i built the purple cruzer and this style was also there. i thought about doing one like this but, i don't have that much skill yet. torgny, excellent work!

now, don't you all feel bad for voting for these clowns? -
fordsixty is right on. i do this all the time with a dremel. you can use 1/24th rims with 1/25th tires or any other rim that is bigger than the tire id. just go slow when you start cutting. it doesn't take to much grinding to go oversize. trust me on that.

when my brother would take me to the drags, when i was a kid, i would see this run. i liked it right off. come to find out, it was just like my brother and me. the older brother was taking his younger brother and they built this car. hope you like it.

'29 ford rpu's
flatheadgary replied to flatheadgary's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
well guys, you are probably right. although this car was done by a 16 year old kid back in the early '60's. not sure if he had done it or someone he got it from did. i know kids did some cool stuff back then though. thanks for the replies. ed, great job! anything i can do to help. what are we in this for, if not that? thanks again, gary -
'29 ford rpu's
flatheadgary replied to flatheadgary's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
well here is my dilemma. i was trying to build this car and the article in the mag says it's a '29. also, i am using the ala kart body and it matches this car. note that the cowl is not '30-'31. -
does anybody know the reason ford built some of them with a rounded back and some that are just flat across the back?

Fiat Fuel Coupe w/ 392 Hemi
flatheadgary replied to Tired of kit bashing's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
that is real nice. fuel coupes are just sweet. there are 2 of them that run in my racing group. nice build. -
ryan, i have seen yours before and i like it! love the door panel and the watch thingy for the gas cap. chuck, yours is too cool. i seen a 1-1 something like yours but, as we all know, they are never the same. isn't scratch building a blast!! thanks for the replies. i don't build contest good but, i like to build what pops in my head. a lot of the time it's not for everybody so i just build for myself. glad you like too. gary

hey, thanks for the replies. yea, the roll cage is made from evergreen plastic, heated over a flame and bent. the welds are just the testers glue. the tubes are fish mouthed to fit good. the silver paint is that paint you can buy that the top of the can is real chromey looking and when you spray it on it's real shiney but, if you put clear on it, it turns to a dull aluminum shade. i found if you put it in a dehydrater for a day or so, it stays shiney, as long as you don't clear it. yes, i do seem to have a weird imagination. just check out my other builds. hahaha

i know you see these as street cars but, i am a drag racer so i built it like that. hope you like it.

that is exceptionally well done. nice color too.

ha!! your preaching to the choir here boys! that's why i got back into models a couple years ago. it usually takes me about a year to finish a full scale car and i have built about 30 1/25th scale cars in 2 years. besides, i have my flathead powered bantam to race, if i feel the need for speed. look up my post if you want to see it. thanks for the replies

i have been trying to finish this for awhile with no luck. thought i would see it finished this way faster.

Two Lane Blacktop on Turner Clasic
flatheadgary replied to a topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
hey guys! i said HOT ROD was a little bizarre not that i didn't like it!. how about when Robert Culp, who owns a car museum and a burger joint, says to his kid to get his car off the drive in lot "because you know what kind of stuff that attracts". or how about when everybody gives Greg Henry every part for his car for FREE. when would you ever see that happening? i also have the movie and like it for the cars not the acting! as far as the roll over goes, a guy who spent that much time working on his car, i think, would think twice before racing someone on a country road. besides, it's a drag car not a road race car. except, who am i to say what people will do. i personally think Heart Like Wheel is the best car movie ever made. good acting and great car scenes. i also have 2 '33 willys and i am in the process of getting a '40 pick up and i have had 4 '55 chevies so, i like the movies for the cars. -

the plot is not to involved and the acting is amateurish but, watch it for the cars. if you want to see a really bizarre car movie get HOT ROD with Greg Henry, Pernell Roberts and Robert Culp. really weird but got great cars in it. -
what a question to have to answer. i have a '32 flathead powered bantam, flathead dragster, 440 Chrysler dragster, 2 henry j's, vw trike, 650xs yamaha bike, '33 willys coupe and pickup, '23 ford t bucket, metropolitan nash, '47 willys jeep, '61 vw bug, mini '40 ford vw rpu, '46 ford box truck, several 'glass bodies and molds of bantams, t's, '29 model a roadster and just a junk yard of parts. all this doesn't even include all the tools i have. i am not even a business. i have been collecting all my life. thanks for the replies. gary

this came about from a 1-1 scale vw '32 ford coupe someone tried to build i saw once. i thought a '34 would flow better. the main cab is vw and the roof is '53 ford truck. the rest is '34 ford coupe. hope you like it.
-
i have a '33 willys pickup in 1-1 scale with 2 front ends. i wondered what to do with the extra front end and came up with this idea. the main cab is vw and the boards and fenders are '34 ford truck. hope you like it!

here is a pic from the mag and the engine in mine.

this was made from Revell's Skip's Fiesta kit. i didn't get elaborate with the engine. i just built the motor box stock. i will get a photo of it anyway and post it. thanks for the replies. gary

this is another jeep project i built. the chassis is the blue max funny car. hope you like it.

i made this from a coupe by cutting the back off and attaching a '40 willy's back on. the doors of a coupe are a litle longer than a pickup. i think i would like a 1-1 built this way for the extra room. hope you like it.
