1/12 Scale Scratch Built Street Rod (Updated: 12/19/06)
GTmike400 replied to GTmike400's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Here are the new pictures that I promised as well as a little insight into how it was machined. I first milled out all the counterweights out of brass. I then proceeded to true the counterweights on my lathe. At this point I also chamfered the edges on the bell curve. After finishing all of the counterweights I machined all of the journals seperately. I'd also like to note that at this time I also machined all of the sleeves for the mains and connecting rods to check the fit before I put the crank together. That way I know it will fit when it comes time to bolt everything together. And then here is the final product. Thanks for looking. -
1/12 Scale Scratch Built Street Rod (Updated: 12/19/06)
GTmike400 replied to GTmike400's topic in WIP: Model Cars
My God this took forever. I have quite the journal of pictures show the parts I cranked out. I've been working on this since I got home from school on Wednesday. What a headache, and its still not done. I still need to sleeve the crankcase, and machine the main caps so I can bolt it all together to square it off. Then I have to balance it, and solder it all together. So here we have it, a crankshaft made entirely out of brass. Unfortunately only one of my pictures came out recognizeable, so I promise to post more clear pictures in about 10-12 hours when I wake up as well as a little more detail of what went into making this piece. Enjoy. -
1/12 Scale Scratch Built Street Rod (Updated: 12/19/06)

I spent the day machining my crankcase out of resin. I could have done it in aluminum, but it would have taken too long, plus theres not a need for it. This is technically the bulkhead for the engine as everything will be built off of it. The blue is dykem, I'll wash it off with alcohol this evening. Enjoy! -

any one famous ?
GTmike400 replied to bob paeth's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Told you I forgot one. I guess he's such a good friend I dont consider him famous anymore. Cordell Taylor, played NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears. Also played CFL and EFL. I just remembered him when I called him this morning. Oh, he's famous. Its funny how after we get to know somebody really well we dont hold them accountable for being famous. -

Chip Foose Carson Lev Igor Sushko Sean Hayes Michael Hayes Chipper Jones Javy Lopez Ed Sexton Thats just off the top of my head for now. I'll post up if I think of more. Oh, I am also related to Jesse James (the Outlaw) -
I'm really skeptical about the quality of the putty. It looks like its a one part putty, so it will only be good for really really thin coats. Second its a water based acrylic, so looks like no wetsanding.

Is there an alternitive to Taluene?
GTmike400 replied to Hot_Rod_Bob's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Toluene is hard to get away from, its in a lot of stuff we use. If you're careful with it, it wont really hurt you. I wear a dual cartridge respirator when I use toluene products. The only putty that I know of that probably doesnt use toluene is Tamiya Epoxy Putties. -
How To Make Opening & Functional Doors, Hoods, and Trunks
GTmike400 replied to nwmud's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I personally prefer sewing thread. It makes a very clean, very precise, and quick cut. I started cutting apart an entire Corvette C5R body with it with no problems. I just made a little U shaped handle to tie the thread around, and started cutting. -

ACME Southern Nationals Model Show Photos
GTmike400 replied to Matt W's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The show was great. I met some great people like Randy Derr, David Morton, Steve Hinson, Jairus, and Gregg. Gregg is a blast to hang out with. He went to dinner with us and we were cracking jokes the entire time. Hence: It was a blast. I look forward to next years show. -
Transmission for 1/6 Ford SOHC engines
GTmike400 replied to dwdirks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The 1/6 motor is going to be WAY too big for the 1/8 Big T. Its about 30% bigger than it should be. No 1/6 scale trannies exist, you will have to build one from scratch. -

I'll be at Petit with the guys. We'll all have to meet up! -
You're going to really have to up the amount you want to spend. My basic lathe and essentials is worth about $750, with all the addons that I've done that seem neccesary close to $1000. Stick with Sherline. I use a Sherline and I am more than impressed with its accuracy. Some people may mention the chinese lathes, but they are not very good for our purpose because of the accuracy and size we work with. Even then, the price is still up there ($500). A lathe really isnt cost effective until you start getting into extreme detail or parts that nobody makes and you are willing to invest that money into being a little unique. I helped Clay Kemp and a few other friends pick out their lathes and setup so please feel free to ask me anything. I might do a write up on buying a lathe and machining.

Who would you like to meet?
GTmike400 replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
First person that came to mind was Mark Jones. Im hoping to meet him when I am out in Cali (hopefully this summer). Definitely one of my modeling idols. On top of that, Mark Gustavson, Jairus Watson, and that Gregg character from the magazine. -
Im not sure about lacquers and paints of the nature. I've used it with a variety of paints from Alclad to Model Masters and not had any problems. Bob Downie uses this stuff too and I think he may have used some lacquers on it before.

Thanks for the comments. Here are probably the last of the pics until the contest. Fully primered and ready for paint. Unfortunately the rollcage moved in these pics so it looks a little weird.

Worst fear materialized: Compressor blowup
GTmike400 replied to ismaelg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thats pretty cool. In the auto shop back at my high school the couplings would shoot off the hoses from time to time because the teached didnt secure them properly. Needless to say they went about 10 feet and then 150psi comes rushing out of the hose. When that happens, I just let it go. The shop needed dusting. -
What's in the box......Revell Corvette C6-R.....
GTmike400 replied to PatRedmond's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The only thing that really seems simplified is the engine area. Which with some scratchbuilding, or modifications to the C5R motor shouldnt be a problem.
