kenworth needle nose tank truck
Q tip replied to jacobus's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
that's going to be a nice build. a pull behind pup tank trailer would complete it. by the way, does anyone else look beyond the project into the background? because it looks like bull nose kw back there. -
texaco tanker question
Q tip replied to mjsjr's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
yep, sure did. I cut the locator tabs off and used metal furnace tape on inside and lined the second half up.no need for gluing cause the tape sticks like concrete. you just need to find something to reach the center to press down the tape... -
mom and pop vs. big hobby shop
Q tip replied to Q tip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
the way I have always done is buy from both sources. hard to find items , such as resin and various after market parts is almost a given for internet sales. as far as kits, i'll swing on both sides. but there is just something about walking into the shop and picking up with your own two hands the product that your wanting with out having to wait days on end for your items to get done bouncing around the country side and hoping it hadn't been damaged.(last package I received looked as if the truck driver delivering it rolled his truck end for end. no damage though) -
mom and pop vs. big hobby shop
Q tip replied to Q tip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
wow , sounds as if i'm not the only one who thinks customer service plays into sales. I would have spent more money with them , but I just didn't feel very welcome. we have a local hobby shop here in angola and I can go there to buy a tube of glue and end up leaving with a bag of supplies, not that I needed them but the owner talks to you , not only about what just came in, but every subject that doesn't even apply to the hobby. I don't know ,figured as long as this place has been around it would had been different. -
ok , i'm gonna jump right in to it . could the dying out of the mom and pop shops be due to the lack of interest of the customer due to internet sales? heres why, went up into Michigan this past weekend and thought I would make it a point to drive out of the way to visit a shop that has been advertised for years. went in and wow! kit upon kit, old and new. had to walk through at least six times to take every thing in. BUT heres my problem, I was the only one in the shop except for the two people working, and not once did either one ask if I needed assistance , how im I doing today , nothing! the only time I was spoken to was when they took my money. almost like I was a bother by visit and spending money. (near $50.00). so I ask, is this lack of interest to a customer why they are slowly disappearing. or is it the internet .

long wheelbase pete
Q tip replied to wvtruckin's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
long and low, I like it, now it needs a bull rack behind it............Q -
traded axles and wheels between the tanker and the log trailer, also replaced the dolly wheels with modern sand shoes.
-
Starting with the amt tank trailer, I decided to change out the axles and wheels for a more up to date look. Stripped chrome from parts to be painted, and built front fenders just to get started.
-
I see you noticed the wheels.I remember back in the early 80's seeing guys paint the insides of the holes to match the truck. showing my age a little bit, but....soon to be showing the trailer for this truck. Its gonna be nice.......thanks Q

paystar 5000 flatbed finished
Q tip replied to dee's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I like it, put a coil of steel on it and the guys around the steel mills in Chicago would be high stylin! -
wheel base 1:1 would be in the area of 362". yes the hood does open, not much to write home about, I was after the paint and over all finish with the old time broughm graphics. The only thing I changed with the painting was the reversal of the order from top to bottom. the original had black on top and orange on the bottom.(I also changed from black to grey). the grill had gotten damaged so instead of trying to repair it I removed the bars . box stock? no. different? oh yea! thanks Q
-
thanks for all the positive comments. Had a vision when I seen the broughm decals and thought why not! mixing retro with modern and trying to make it look right is the biggest challenge. thank again........Q

Oops! Hit the post button instead of preview. Enjoy.....Q

its done! paint, decals and a lot of work to make it look right, I think it turned out pretty good, enjoy! thanks john
-
just missing the two front tires but they had been replaced. the frame is together witch is ok with me cause its ready to be extended out to get away from the 1970's era.decals are faded but that's fine too. i'll get some from jerry @ model truckin. glad I found it , made the trip worth while........Q

I don't think I have built anything from the box in 20 years or better. I always seem to find something to change to keep it from looking like the next guys project. besides isn't the ,what do you call it,,,,,instruction sheet,,optional?
-
no kidding, it almost made me nervous waiting to pay for it. looked it up on e-bay and the kit is selling for around $150.00!

while over in Elkhart Indiana last week end and coming up short on finding any hobby shops (hobby land is gone) ,I had all but given up and told my wife head back home to angola but instead of getting on the tollway we would take the back roads home. while going through granger I came upon a small "mom and pop" hobby shop. Went inside and there it was. Ready for this? A first issue revell kenworth w900 "BLUE DIAMOND" kit. couldn't hardly get the money out of my pocket and out the door fast enough. The price you ask? $35.00

Truck looks good. I'm with JT ,every one seems to pick up a handy tip from each other. I never put my work out for the world to see,I always just built for myself to relax and show the guys at the shop. Keep up the good work! Q tip.

lonestar large car
Q tip replied to Q tip's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks for the input. I just taped the head lights to see what it would look like, I'm trying to get the old puck up truck look that the lone star was modeled after. I never would have thought about the chicken slide for the top. Gotta get back to the drawing board now! Thanks again kostas,,,,,,, Q -

Done a little more work the past couple evenings. Built the outlaw visor in the same method as the fenders due to the curve and slope of the windshield. The decking is made from card stock and thin balsa painted to match the frame and spaced to show the chrome foil underneath. The head lights...well it think looks just cool, giving it the old time feel. Thanks for lookin. Q! -
After all the years of modeling I found a way to make fenders and form other items such as rollbars exsaust ect. .. What I had done first was to cut the piece from flat sheet . Then find a per say jig to form the shape I needed. Boil water ,start by dipping the plastic , use caution it is boiling water, so use a glove and a tool of sort to hold the part. Once it softens bend the plastic around the jig and hold. Dip the part and jig back into the hot water and hold a few seconds. Remove and dip the part and jig into ice water to shock it.Remove your newly made part from jig and repeat process to build another identical part. Give it a shot ,it worked great for me.......Q
