Clear lacquer over decals
Pavel A. replied to unclescott58's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I always spray clearcoat over decals. My favourite is any gloss 2K clearcoat. I buy it in local carpaintshop. Set of 1litre clearcoat + 0,5 litre hardener +1litre thinner costs about 40-45 USD (38 Euros). Mixing ratio is about 3-4 parts of clearcoat : 1 part hardener :1,5 part thinner. But for each is good another ratio... each airbrush gun is different. I mixed it in medical syringe. Of course... 2k clearcoat you can apply on any type of color... enamel, acrylics, lacquer, carpaint, childrens water colors, ... 2k is not agressive. -
For me best are normal car paint from car paintshop. Guys thinned in 1:1 ratio with thinner. It is prepared for 0,3 mm nozzle or more. I can say spray it in thin layers. This colors are known as "the base". Surface must be satin, no gloss!!! Than I apply decals and cover by 2k clearcoat. From modellers paints are best of the best Mr.Color C (lacquer type) thinned by lacquer thinner with blue label ( yellow label is also good, it is contains retarder and it cans overlive paint under). Ratio is between 3-4 (thinner): 1 (color). I sugest mr.color with letters GX. These "GX"s are especially for car modellers. Very glossy and what is important very quick dry. For example gloss black (you can use it as a base under chrome) is dried in 20 minutes!

Hmm. Last five years I tried to find best chrome colour. Trust me, best is Spaz Stix mirror chrome 10.000 sprayed by airbrush. More resistant like alclad. Very simple I can say... Spaz is dumb resistant. Next version is try to use Mr.color SM008 plate silver. After short and light polishing it is like a mirror. And resistant like lacquer color. For example: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/112919-kenworth-w900a-silver-edition-revell-125/all chrome part (excl.exhausts - PE, grille - PE) are airbrushed by spaz. Take a look on battery covers...

Hi guys. After long time, here is my latest project. Truck, created for 25 years of production of KW at Canada. I can say that everything is changed or overworked on this model. Base is red out of box Revell W900A. Hood is shorted, front axle is from KFS (steerable), Wheels are drilled for better look.... and many many more. Chrome is removed and replaced by Spaz Stix mirror chrome. Chassis is shortened for 11 mm so as hood. Engine is replaced for Cummins NTC 400. Unfortunately in 1/24 scale (Mack Sinalco by Revell), but I think it looks good. New are also air filters, mirror brackets, extended luberfiner and dryer, placed on chassis. Silver is from Mr.hobbyNo.8 (lacquer), decals are from Jerry Reeter (Modeltruckin), everything covered by 2k Ivat. There are also PE parts from Czech Truck Model, so as grill, exhauts covers, steppers, raindrops covers and more. Very big thanx to mr. Dean Ross Griffin owner of original truck named "DESTINY". Working time was about 8 months.

Pavel A. replied to Mike77's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was about 1998 - 1999. The first it was T900 Australia from RoG. Painted by brush, by Revell enamel paints. Thu built takes about two weeks. Now it is 3 months for each .:) -

next step is how to make simple new airbags. There are made from evergreen profiles. and also I must did something with terrible tyres. I put inside disc a stripe of plastic, how you can see on picture. And of course I drilled a new holes into discs. -

As the first must I removed front axle. Next step were shorted chassis, for the same size as hood, underthe cab there was best place to made it. I decided to replace also airbags from rest rear axles. Original is terrible. -
