  1. My boss has two of them. Heaven knows why.

This was when he bought them; they're out of the weather now in one of his warehouses.

I also wrote a musical number about Yugo for my car club's '80s-themed awards show, to the tune of "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". A couple excerpts that are relatively SFW:

Well wake up – I bought a Yugo
    It’s a better value than a Peugeot
Hit the gas – and drive our Yugo
And get her screamin’ when you shift to high
On the streets – that shiny Yugo
Will be impressin’ everyone in WeHo
They’ll say Wow – Is that a Yugo
    Let’s go cruisin’ tonight
    For $3995 (yeah, yeah)

    * * *

Wait a minute, now what’s that sound

Both front wheels are out of round

Gearshift lever snapped off in my hand

Door won’t stay closed – tie it with a rubber band

    (shut it off)

Hop on out and push the Yugo

Rear defogger warms your hands like cocoa

Help me shove our poor sick Yugo

Trade-in value won’t be very high

Called Triple-A, to get our Yugo

They just said to stick it up my (CENSORED)

    Let’s forget about the Yugo

    Let’s go walking tonight

Based on the 1956 short story "Fifty-two Miles to Terror" by Alex Gaby; available at archive.org:

The story makes the narrator more of a jerk who starts the trouble with the kids in the hot rod. By the way, I highly recommend this book. Great stories in it.

  3. Something I forgot about with the '63 F-100; AMT continued producing the promos until at least 1965 - but the only ones I've seen were plated dealer awards. Looks like the only thing they changed was the year on the bumpers; the '63 grill wasn't updated:

Looks like this one got the gold-plated wheelcovers off a '66 Galaxie award promo.

  4. The '61 kit is kind of an oddball - it has a separate roof and separate chrome B-pillars which don't look or fit right, plus the rear wheel openings were carried over from the four-door sedan. It really looks like it was supposed to be a convertible but Chevrolet didn't build a Corvair vert until '62. I ended up building mine as a phantom droptop using a boot from the IMC '48 Ford (it fits perfect).

  5. Lucky you!!! Back in 1982 or '83, the L.A. edition of Auto Trader advertised several damaged cars I recognized as being used in The Junkman; I was interested in two Chrysler Cordobas so I called the number and surprisingly, it was Halicki himself who answered. We talked about his films and the cars (one Cordoba had rolled and crushed the roof but the other was only nicked on a rear corner). He offered to show me his collection (for a $10 fee which I'd have gladly paid) down in Carson; never took him up on that and regret it to this day.

I did go to his estate auction and bought one lot of model cars; of those I kept a brown metallic '79 El Camino promo.
