Both of the stock Mustang II kits have a correct V6 engine for the stock versions.  Both originated as 1974 models; no V8 was offered that year.

Perhaps I was thinking of some of the Drag race versions of the kit.  Also I think the MPC 83 GT kit has a v8 that looks larger than a 302 but not like a big block Ford.  I think my point is that the models kits of the 60s and 70s would lag behind the real cars so that is how you end up with a Boss 429 in a 73 Mustang or Cougar kit despite Ford dropping the engine after 1970.

It doesn't have the correct engine to be built stock, it has an 427 which had been phased out by 73 and a Boss 429 which was gone by 73 also. You'll need a 351 Windsor or a 351 Cleveland to make it actually stock.

It’s a shame the same incorrect engines (for a stock build) have been carried over to every reissue in just about every FOMOCO AMT and MPC kit since the 1970s.  Only by looking at a few years later (Mustang II kits) might you find something that resembles a 351 engine which of course was never Installed in a real 74 and later Mustang.

  3. I was not sure when this kit may be available is the US market so I ordered two from the UK and they arrived in about two weeks.  I have started on the build By gluing the engine together and hope to not take as long as I did to finish the Boss 351.  As you can tell it shares many of the same parts with the 351 kit with the main differences being the engine, front bumper, rear panel, and wheels and tires.  It should be noted that the movie car had C code 429, with a C6 automatic which can be sourced by aftermarket resin casters.  Other things to note is the “hero” car did not have the deluxe steering wheel and had the standard two spoke wheel instead, and it was a non ram air car so the air cleaner would look different.  Revell did go through the trouble of making a new hood (without the twist locks) but alas the engraving for the ram air plenum on the underside is still there.  The hook locks brackets on the radiator support should be removed since those are part of the ram air option.  So to build a J code 429 Mach1 with a hurst four speed and ram air all you would need to do is swap hoods with the Boss 351 kit, paint the black or silver on the hood, and use the side stripes from the Boss 351 kit and source some 429 RAM AIR decals for the hood from Rays kits.

  4. Very nice work.  Seeing this build with the borrowed parts from a 73 kit reminds me of what the 71-73 Mustang kits could have been with a more realistic engine compartment and correct dual exhaust system.

  5. I agree that the new/old kit is not as good as an original kit.  Over the years I have collected some old built ups of the fastback, a few built ups of the original MPC version that has separate door handles, and a promo which had been painted.  The standard for reissued AMT kits that have not been on store shelves in almost 60 years is still there otherwise Round2 would not have brought them back.

Pictured is the MPC kit and a promo I repainted red.

I drill out the dash gauges and radio opening and created a clear lens I install at the back. I created gauge decals on white water-slide decal paper. and put them on the backside of the clear lens facing outwards. you can see the gauges in normal color looking at them with the lights off. I then create a cover to block out the light from behind. I use 1.8mm green LED for the light with a 1.8mm hole drilled in the backing. For this car I will be using 1mm fiber optic end bright cable to go through the dash to the Rally Pac gauges. Most of my LEDs I got from Evans designs though you can get the lights from almost anywhere. To further block out unwanted light I use black electrical liquid tape at the joints.

Thanks for the quick and detailed response.

  7. Looks like you are well one your way to another awesome kit bashed 66 Mustang.  If you do not mind I’d Ike to learn more about the LED lights and whether you used the it decal with perhaps a piece of clear sheet plastic sprayed with clear with a green tint.  The dash in your other Mustangs look very realistic.  If I was to replicate them like they are in my 1:1 72 Mach1 they would be very dim.  🙃  A decade or so ago I replaced the dash bulbs with LED that have a blue tint and are much brighter at night.

It's a Ram Air air cleaner, unfortunately. It looks like we'll have to wait until the 1973 version (Eleanor) comes out to get a correct non-Ram Air air cleaner. Hopefully the aftermarket can step up.

That looks good.  I hope also Revell does a 73 Mach1 version which should be pretty easy with the NACA hood, 351 CJ with stock valve covers, and correct 73 Mach1 decals.  Maybe slip in the ram-air plenum for bonus points.
