What would YOU like to see as a model
drksd4848 replied to JeroenM3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, I sure hope they do listen, but I’m skeptical. I’ve sent them multiple emails before requesting the 71-72 RR kit, but the only thing I would get in return would be some boilerplate corporate response: “…Not in our plans, but we will forward your email to the <round file>” Trust me, I have supported them and continue to support them plenty. I just bought two Round 2 kits the other day, not to mention a few Johnny lightning’s as well. They get plenty of my money. -

Did that have the aluminum block as well? -

Wow, this really was an annual: https://www.ebay.com/itm/134220936334?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338722076&customid=&toolid=10050 Those reissues really kill the resale value of the originals. BTW how about they reissue this one: (However, even I know the odds are pretty slim so I wouldn’t bang the door down for it) I had the original release! I’m pretty sure that was a Johan release. Who has the rights to that tooling? -

I remember I used to look out of the passenger side window of my mother’s ‘72 Road Runner and sneer at those Volare Road Runners; called them “Road Fakers”. Now if I came across one that was in good shape - especially a 1980 Volare Road Runner - I’d probably buy it. Drop a 340 in it out of a 70-71 Duster, with a four speed. That would be a pretty good little car. -

What can I say? I’m committed to the cause. My username checks out. So there actually was a 1980 Volare annual? I know there’s that 1977 Volare I’ve seen here and there, and the 1976 Road Runner model was actually the 1975 Road Runner. But for the life of me, I could never find the 1980, hence why I was taken aback when I saw Round2 to release the Fuzz Duster. I didn’t think a 1980 annual existed. BTW, in this case it’s also the only time someone confused a Duster with a Road Runner! (There was also a duster package for the Volare if I’m not mistaken.) -

I did too! Guilty as charged. That kit was so goofy I just had to buy it! Plus I like that style of Volare. I have to give Round 2 credit where credit is due; that was a pretty cool kit. I just remember seeing it released and thinking, “Where the hell did that come from?!” -

Obviously I can only directly speak for myself, but if you comb through this forum you get the sense that many people have been clamoring for this kit for a lot longer than the three year lead up period and I’ve been asking them (Round 2) even longer than that; not that I ever expected them to make their decision based on my request and the requests of others. Tone deaf companies generally don’t do that. I don’t know. Given the desire of their clientele, it seems like releasing this kit would be a no-brainer. If they are not going release it though, why would they bother releasing the 74 Road Runner for the thousandth time and that oddball 1980 Volare Road Runner that came out of nowhere. Just doesn’t add up. The only reason why they wouldn’t is because they really don’t want to. -

Sure! Who doesn’t need one? Honestly, I’ve wanted one since I was five and to be honest I didn’t even know this kit existed until I was in my 20s. (I knew about the 71 reissue in the early 90s. I had a few of those when I was a kid) If they finally re-issued ‘72 I’d probably buy about 10 of them. I know that originals can be found here and there, but I can’t justify paying 200 to 300 some odd dollars for a model kit. Hence, they should just re-issue the damn thing. Seems like they re-issued just about everything else. It wouldn’t be hard. They already have the majority of the pieces from the 74 kit Instead, they keep beating that ‘74 Road Runner into the ground. It was cool when they reissued that one the first 10 times. There’s also that 1980 Volare Road Runner kit that came out of nowhere. Where’d they get the tooling for that one? And yet, they stubbornly refuse to re-issue that 71–72 kit. -

Round 2 corp’s biggest excuse for not reassuring the 71–72 MPC Plymouth Road Runner kit Is that sometime along the way the tooling was damaged, there’s nothing they can do about it and they can’t retool the missing pieces https://www.round2corp.com/new-tooling/#MK Scroll down to the new models. Round 2 tools new stuff all the time I don’t understand it. I was talking to the owner of a hobby store in Barre, Vermont (of all places). We talked about the 71–72 MPC Plymouth Road Runner kit. He told me flat out that kit is hot and everyone comes in the store looking for it. And he himself can’t understand why they don’t just re-tool the damaged parts and re-issue it (Especially when it’s obvious they tool new stuff all the time). And so, I have to ask: What is your problem with this kit Round 2?! Seriously, tell me, what is your problem with this kit? Does somebody at corporate just not like it? Tooling damaged? So what? Can’t use that excuse. You guys are tooling up new stuff all the time, yet you can’t tool up a few new parts for a kit where you already have 75% of the components? Really?! Unbelievable. Well, I guess you can just re-issue the 74 Road Runner kit again for the umpteenth time. Put it in a brand new fancy metal box or something. Why not? Nice and easy. -

Thanks! How cool will it be to use that GTX kit to build a ‘72?! I always liked that kit better than the MPC version. -

(Before I begin on my rant, I gotta ask: Did we get the name of the guy who is casting those 1/24 scale Road Runner pieces? I sure would like a few of those myself...) The reasons for why they haven't re-released '71/72 B body; I feel like it's more than just damaged tooling. Let's look at it this way: I would say 75-80% of the parts for this kit have been, or are already being produced. You can take them all from either the '71 Charger, *OR* even better, the '74 Road Runner! Dash, engine, interior, wheels, tires... It's all already out there! So, what else do you need? Well... the body is the big one, obviously. But American Muscle has a 1/18 '71 RR. Round2 owns American Muscle. You can't scale that from 1:18 to 1:25? Seriously? The Hood, the bumpers, and taillights. HOW COST PROHIBITIVE COULD IT POSSIBLY BE TO TOOL (OR RETOOL IF IT WAS MODIFIED) A HANDFUL OF PARTS?!! ROUND2 tools new parts all the time!!! Give me a break! So, how hard could this POSSIBLY BE? And there are so many new ways to do this stuff that could reduce the cost. 3D printing, computer modeling... etc. Look, I may seem like I'm wearin' a tin hat here, but I really believe there is something beside the tooling issues that keeps them from releasing it. Maybe they think it's not popular enough and it wouldn't sell? Ridiculous!! There is so much pent up demand for this kit, they'd fly off the shelf. Someone at Round2 just flat out doesn't like this kit. Because if they wanted to make it happen , they would. -

Don’t get me started... ? Especially with the release of the FF GTX (the real movie car had a 72 rear bumper) Did they do that? Noooo... Just dig up something off the shelf. How hard can it be to tool up ONE <bleeping> PIECE?!!! It still boggles my mind why Round2 does everything it can do to avoid reissuing the ‘71/‘72 Road runner kit...? -
Well, since you aked: 3D 1972 Plymouth Road Runner What Dave Van said. If they are making the '74 Road Runner, the '68 Road Runner, then they have the licensing. BTW, you don't need WB licensing to call it a Road Runner. If you want decals, there are plenty of aftermarket decal makers. Or, bust out a printer. Dave, respectfully, I just don't understand - they retool parts all the time. And they even make kits from scratch. Their stated reasons couldn't be the problem. It's something else... The last time I asked them was three years ago and I was very polite, but I got the stone wall. The only way you get obtuse companies to acknowledge anything - I have seen - is to wadge a campaign. I'd even be happy if they acknowledged all this with a real answer... or a good reason. Like, "We really don't like the kit and Tom isn't a fan of the '71/'72 B-bodies. He'd rather put the resources elsewhere." I could actually accept that one with a bit of resignation, because their other reasons seem flimsy: they do 'X' for other products, but say they can't do it for for this one? Yes they can. What is it really? BTW, aside from this, is it possible to 3D print polystyrene? Because with advances in manufacturing, there's got to be a better way to do this now than the traditional injection mold method.

Those are gorgeous... How did you get rid of the air grabber? I looked at the toy version of Dom's 71/72 Franken-runner. The rear bumper is terribly molded... but, it's the only 1/24 '72ish bumper that is out there. I'm surprised a scale model version hasn't been released... I was hopeful it would...

I really liked that kit. I had one but unfortunately I turned that kit into a glue bomb. But the advantage the MPC version had was you could put a '72 grille insert in it. Couldn't do it with this one. Hmm... maybe I should harass Revell into making a 1972 version of this with the standard RR hood. Perhaps they'll be more receptive than Tom Lowe, who seems a bit tone deaf. He should pay better attention to these communities. His customers are hard-core and loyal and right here. It would behoove him to listen and interact with them.

Alright, I'm going to play devils advocate for a second: It was last reissued around 1987 by MPC/ERTL, AFTER the '74 was reissued by MPC, so I think Round 2 might have the body, interior and trim somewhere. I think the big problem is that the tool won't produce bodies that won't warp. Yes, but that didn't stop MPC from reissuing them in '87. The kits that have been built have held up just fine. I built three of the '87 reissues when I was a youngster. I never saw the warping issues and it wouldn't bother me anyway. So what if it warps? So what if it's fragile in the windshield area? Is R2C that obsessed with it that it keeps them from reissuing them? If they rebuilt the tooling, it could be corrected. I think they mentioned that there were issues in the '74 tooling that they corrected. It was one of the selling points. Also, it does share some tooling (chassis, engine) with the '74 kit, which ALSO seems to share some of these things with the Dodge Monaco cop car. Exactly, which is why it would make sense to reissue it. It wouldn't take much investment. Again, if they had the resources to make a brand new kit, they could easily do this. They simply don't want to for reasons that I suspect that make as much sense as "how now brown cow". (actually, make that a GY9 cow) And unfortunately, the '71-'72 cars never got as much love as the '68-'70 B Bodies in the 1:1 world, so I don't think we'll see a retool. Ehh... I think the real car world and the model car world is apples to oranges. There is much love for the 71/72s especially now-a-days. If the 74 sells, the 71/72 will sell. If there is a Petty version, most definitely. I hate to say all of this, especially as I'm a fan of these cars, having owned two of them, BTW, my mom had a '72 RR that I came home from the hospital in as a newborn, and since I was able to crawl, I've lusted after one of these kits because I loved the car. Sure I could buy a used one, but I can't justify paying $250 for a plastic kit that should be back out there in the age of retro-reissues. The 1/24 kit that Revell does is widely available and a pretty good representation, too. I'll cosign on that one. The monogram Satellite had it all over the MPC. Beautiful detail. I built that one too. I pretended it was a '72 But, MPC was the one that built the '72 and R2C has the rights to MPC... I would like to see somebody do a '72 rear bumper and grille for that one. Why they won't is beyond me. Add the standard RR hood to that as well. (It was on the Monogram Satellite.) It is ridiculous that they haven't. Especially after that FF8 Dom's GTX monstrosity. They molded the '72 bumper for the Jada version (although not well.)

Alan, it's not about me though. It's the greater good (if that makes sense). If it was about me, then sure, I'd just buy a kit. But I don't believe that. I want it out there. For everyone. The corporate misinformation about why they're not just doesn't add up. Someone in the company doesn't like the car and doesn't want it out there. They could fix the issues if they wanted to, but they won't for reasons beyond...
-
See, now that proves my point. They *COULD* do it, if they wanted to. If they could tool that kit from scratch, they would certainly have the resources to - if not fix the damaged tooling - create new tooling to for a handful of parts. They don't even need to do the rest of the kit. Everything else could be borrowed. You can't tell me there is no demand. Nope. Won't buy it. If they are willing to reissue multiple Road Runners, then they obviously know there is a demand for the kits, or else, why bother? I'm not an industry insider, but common sense tells me it would be far LESS expensive to make tooling for a few body parts, than it is to make a brand new Camaro kit. (bleh). I'd bet the 71/72 RR kit would sell better. A LOT better. So, you can't tell me demand isn't there. It is. Again, cost? If they are willing to make new kits, they have the money to make just FOUR TO FIVE body parts. Hood, bumpers, grille inserts, body. That's it. So, tooling, money, demand etc. I aint buying it. It's something else that goes beyond logistics/finances and common sense.
