Hard to tell anymore, being a custom, but looks like it started out as a GM car, possibly a 53-54 Chevy and had Caddy bumperettes added to the front.

Back was chopped off and a bed was added, using modified Chevy pickup fenders.

Looks doable using readily available model kit parts.

    Are you inspired?

    Indeed I am sir. 😁

Rob...I mocked up a very similar nose back in 2012:

Ok, that looks like beast made from a few different cars. The big bullet bumperettes are from a 57 Cadillac but the hood and fenders along either the windshield look like an earlier 50s Caddy. The rear fenders don't look like anything I could find offhand, they're either completely custom or something really odd.

It looks to be a 53/4 chevy. The top of the doors are a little different at the front edge than the olds, having a more pronounced widening below the window. I think the revell 53 chevy delivery might be a good starting point and less work than the olds around the headlights and grille area

Thanks everyone. Thanks to the wonder of hot rod/custom knowledge that is the H.A.M.B., I was able to find out who the owner is. I've found his Instagram page, and sent him a message. And I got a little info.

It's a '53 Chevy, with a 57 Caddy grill/bumper, home made bed with F1 fenders. More than that I don't have as of yet. I'm hoping the owner gets back with me.

building a straight replica of the 1:1, as significant as it is, doesn’t excite me too much, but I’d like to build something close to it.

Yes. Zero interest in a replica, but I could work with those parts. Oh yes.

  3. Oh boy. In 40 odd years (off and on) of modeling, I've never tackled this one. I have thought about it a lot whenever it's reissued though. I think I'll finally get one.

There's two versions of this kit as I recall, yes? One terrible and one not so terrible?

  4. Guys, thanks very much for the input. After thinking about it a while, I think I'm more interested in getting building something similar rather than doing a faithful replica. Like what I did with my '48 Ford recently. To build something with the same "feel", if you get me. With that thought, I've the following convertibles that might do.

AMT '50 Ford (the frontrunner in my mind)

    Revell 48 Ford "Greased Lightning"

Revell Foose Cadillac (this could be interesting)

And some hardtops/coupes that I would happily chop up.

    Revell 49 Merc (another fav)

    Monogram '53 Chevy

    Monogram '56 Chevy

    Revell 50 Olds Custom

    AMT '51 Chevy Fleetline

I really appreciate you guys helping me think this through. Much appreciated.

  5. Thanks guys. I'm pretty convinced it's pre-'55 GM. I have the AMT '50 Ford convertible. That might work.

As for trying to reproduce the car in the picture you might consider starting with the Revell '50 Olds coupe.

David, that's a good suggestion. I have the custom version on the shelf.  I know I have the custom rear fenders from the AMT '53 Ford pickup, I just need to find a bed. I probably have one, I just need to find it.

I started making the exhaust system.  The headers will attach where the green lines are.  They'll be cutoffs where the red arrows are pointing.  Behind the mufflers they'll be short pipes that bend out in front of the rear tires.  The mufflers will be Flowmaster 40 series.

Pro-stocks are notoriously low to the ground. Have you set the ride height yet to verify you have room for an exhaust system?

I've never heard of a sagging issue with solder. Not saying you're wrong, I've just never heard or witnessed that happening.

I saw it once on a model at a contest. It was a classic Hooker type, 4 into 1. The builder said he should have added a support like an exhaust bracket. It was the only time I've seen it, admittedly.

I know I tend to underthink things and look for the easy way out, but why not simply use two sets of funny car headers? You would probably have to make the flange where they attach to the heads, but all the lengths and bends would be the same.

Tommy, each of the 12 cylinders has two exhaust ports. So it would be six downtubes with a Y at the mounting end, or 12 individual downtube, per side. However, I need to thank you for replying.  As, when I did a Google search for that image show you, I accidently found some 1/25 3D printed Allison headers. Not exactly what I'm looking for but clearly there are options I hadn't researched yet.

  9. Back in 2003, Evanescence released their debut album Fallen. At the time my sons were young and getting into rock music and my boy William requested the album for a birthday gift. Like good parents, we listened to everything the kids were into, and this album I enjoyed. The heavy beat. good guitars and a great female vocalist.

While chatting online with some friends that are about 15 years younger than I, I mentioned enjoying that album and asked if there were any other similar artists. Thusly I was introduced to the world of symphonic metal. They gave me a list of about six artists with the most popular, a group called Nightwish, originally from Finland.

The first album I listened to really grabbed me and pulled me into that world of gothic themed, symphonic metal. The album is Once, their 5th studio album and the last with their original lead singer,  Tarja Turunen, an outstanding soprano. Once is #89 on Rolling Stones Top 100 Greatest Metal Albums of all Time, list.

This is Ghost Love Score, one of their signature songs and the measuring stick for their last two lead singers.

  10. Dax every so often a builder comes along and just takes it to another level. Imagination and skill on full display. That's not you but ..........

I'm kidding. That's totally you. 😆 Honestly man, your hover vehicles look like something you'd see in a movie like the 5th Element. A great idea and the right amount of detail. Terrific stuff.

Looks great Rob!  I hope the new job continues to work out friend!

Carl, I sure hope so too. I'm 53 and I've had the rug pulled out from under me so many times by economic changes or uncertainty, that make companies do stupid stuff, starting back in 1990. I either miss a job opportunity entirely or by the time I get to the point of where I could be a team/shift lead or supervisor or subject matter expert, a trainer, something happens. I just need another 14 years to retire. It would be great to do it here at Micron. I'm darn tired of starting at the bottom over and over. I'm real good at what I do. Ech. Sorry for the rant. It's been a rough 14 months.

  12. Hmm. I just noticed this never got an Under Glass post, I just added it to my 2021 builds post. It was a fun build but sadly something popped up during final assembly that I just didn't notice while building. The severe drop on the stockcar headers was too severe. They end up about a scale inch off the table top and if it were a real car would make it undrivable. But, it looks great in my model case. If I don't look under. Thanks for looking.

Oh and an update on the employment thing. I worked a pretty awful low paying job for about seven months. Then I was hired by a semi-conductor memory (think flash drive memory) manufacturer here in Boise, and went to work. Better pay, better benefits, etc. The hours aren't ideal, but I'll make do. All's well that ends well, I suppose.

Plastruct sells bends in various sizes and degrees that are pinned at both ends which would be perfect. Their website is not the easiest to navigate, but this link might get you started. I've long wondered why folks don't use these to build headers, since you could assemble them just like they do in 1:1.

    https://www.plastruct.com/search?q=bend

Thanks, that might be the way to go.
