  1. Like most of my work recently, this next build is inspired by someone's real vehicle. While perusing Pinterest a few years ago I came across a custom Chevy RPU and I stuck the photo in my files and forgot about it. Recently I found it again, and set out to find the owner/builder. Through the fine gearheads on the H.A.M.B., I tracked him down and eventually made contact with him. Klaus Gardan lives in Denmark and he built this himself, in his garage. He's the real deal. A true hot rodder. Lots of outstanding metal work. The car is called the Lady Luck 1953 Chevrolet, and you can find it on FB if your interested. Like most home-build rods it's been through lots of "versions". The red one is it's current look. Klaus has been very accommodating and has answered all my questions. It's conventionally lowered, 350 powered and if you're trying to place the rear fenders, they are hand built from a Volvo roof and VW fenders. It started as a '53 Chevy Tradesman. What I love about this phantom is that it blurs the lines between customs, hot rods and even rat rods.

So my plan for my model will be "inspired" by Klaus' '53, will be an AMT '51 Chevy, using a '50 Chevy bed with '57 Chevy fenders. I'm going to start from this pile of various AMT '51 stuff. It's gonna be fun. No firm plans, I'm making this up as I go. And yes, I'm starting with the Fleetline body. Once I cut it in half, the roof will keep the body more rigid, so it'll be easier to close the back of the cab. More soon, I hope.

Shadow Box Diorama - this will become a priority very soon. If I attend GSL, I want this one done. It will feature a 51 Henry J, project car.

Stand by for the new project - 1951 Chevy RPU.

  3. As it turns out, although I take a lot of WIP shots, not many mock ups. So I thought this would be a good opportunity to go through and count up the WIP's. I'm happy to find the list of models in progress isn't as bad as I assumed. Nine. Although by the end of the weekend the count will be ten. 😃

To kick it off, a 1925 Model T track roadster.

Did you have to use a white primer over the grey, or did the yellow base coat go straight over the grey?

Sonny, most paints have a certain level of opacity. Thusly are affected in some way by the base color. So if you want a bright top coat, it is better to have a light base coat.

  5. This is an interesting project. But why are you starting a new thread for each update? Just add more to your existing posts. This just makes more work for the moderators who will eventually get around to combining them for you, I'm sure.

Rob, here's some pics of the Olds...............

Wow. That looks great. The '75 had round headlights and a more pleasing grill IMHO. Mine was white with a blue vinyl top and white interior. 13 miles to the gallon. They are pretty rare these days. Only the convertibles seem to hold any value today.

I think the bumper addons give a more realistic and practical look.

I quite agree. I wish I'd thought of it when I built my '49. Well done.

Car model section starts at about 21:25.

    Thanks Bill, that was helpful.

I think I want to take another crack at that Batmobile. Though It's not even close to a favorite, I built one years ago as a gift for a family member, who loved it. It went together very well. I've since come up with some ideas for ways to improve it and make it a proper Batmobile in my eyes.

I have set the ride height as it's going to be a kerbside.

Kerbside, with a "K". I dig it. This is a real good idea as this one is super hard to get that low without reworking the entire chassis. I'll be following along.

That's great that you found it, I had even tried a reverse image search and didn't get anything. If I were going to build something along these lines I would start with the Foose Cadillac. Paint it a satin color, find some cool pinstripes, get a set of 20" steelies, drop in the Caddy engine from the Revell 49 Mercury. The only issue is the interior, it's too modern for this style.

All good points. I do have a Monogram '53 with optional lowered suspension. I do have a bed from the Revell '50 pickup and the custom fenders and early hemi from the AMT '53 pickup. Some custom grill/bumper options from the Revell custom '48 Ford. It seems I have all the pieces to do something very close to the photo. I love the stripe, but I think I'll change the color from black as I just finished a flat black hot rod.

Now I just have to finish putting my new hobby room together so I can get started. I'm about half done.

Thanks again guys. This should be fun.
