WOW, that's neat as a pin, very clean. I recognize the Slixx decals, what are the paint colors and sources ?

Thanks David, to be honest I had painted it so long ago that I can’t remember what particular colors I had used. IIRC they are testors brand rattle cans. Nowadays I make notes of the builds on my instructions so I can remember later.

Nice build.  Love the old Comets.

    Thanks Bob

  2. Well I did reach out to the vendor and this was his response .

“It is not possible for us to economically make a standard practice of removing and reworking individual parts from customer mounted racks even if we spot the defects.  There are too many variables that cause these inconsistencies.  When the large majority of parts come out fine we have little choice.  The savings the customer sees when mounting their own parts is quite significant and it is our intent to pass that savings on to the customer.   You have shown only six parts from a total of four full racks of chrome work.  If you wish to strip the parts, remounting them on a rack and sending them back we will redo the parts.  That is the best we can offer.”

I emailed him back to let him know it was only six pics that I sent but between 4 racks there was a total of 15 bumpers with issues ( including one that after looking again I discovered a hair in it ) . I haven’t heard back. Based on his response I not sure I’m comfortable sending them back out to him but at the same time currently there’s few options. For the record I’ve tried alclad and other methods that came out good but I still prefer them to actually be chromed. I guess I was a little surprised that he didn’t seem to be too worried that the quality of the chrome job was not very good or apologetic to some level. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he offered to redo them.

  3. Thanks everyone for the responses and good advice. I’m going to reach out to the vendor . In all honesty I believe the vendor will make it right without any problems. They seem like good people. I’ll keep you posted.

most of the labor was on me (as I had to strip and remount the parts).  That was very frustrating!

This thought absolutely ran through my brain. However as frustrating as it is, it is still the lesser of the evils because the way they are now would drive me crazy EVERY time I looked at the model.

  4. Hello all, As the title says I’m unhappy with the results of chroming that was done. First, I’m not going to say who had done the work as I don’t want to turn this into a bashing session on the vendor. Let me explain a little. I’ve sent many racks out to this place and a majority of the time no big issues although the second to last order came back with some mild discoloration and what looks like dust in the chrome but overall I was still happy. This last order I got back was definitely worse than the last. I’ve included some pics but they don’t really do it much justice. The discoloration ( kind of goldish in hue) is more prevalent, more what looks like dust and tiny bubbles in the chrome, dull patches and runs in the chrome. I’ve used the same tedious process every time in my prep including even blowing off the racks with the computer canned air before putting them into new ziplock bags. The parts were stripped in super clean, rinsed thoroughly in warm water, than washed with warm water and dawn followed by another rinse and blown dry with compressed air.  Not every part looked bad, some looked fantastic, especially all the wheels that came back. It was mostly on the bumpers. I don’t know if it’s just me being overly picky or if this result is not typical. I don’t want to be that guy complaining so I’m reluctant to contact the vendor. What do you guys think?

Steve, your interior just keeps getting better with every post! I love that you kept the back seat as two parts like the 1:1!  I have 4 of these '68's..........two of which are just bodies I am restoring; and I figured I would end up just molding the interior parts and possibly the bright work (grille and bumpers) down the line to complete them. If you are still looking to have your interior parts molded I would be willing to work with you. I also have 16+ years in the casting business so you can be rest assured I wouldn't run off with your parts. By the way, do you plan on keeping the door handles and window cranks separate (to be painted and glued on after the door panels are painted); or were you planning on mounting them to the door panels at this time? I offer the door handles and window cranks separately for the custom tuck'n roll interiors I mastered and still offer in resin. I would think we could come up with a decent source for interior door handles and window cranks to be made separate from the door panels and keep with the over all level of detail you've put into this interior so far...............Ed (Drag City Casting).

    Hi Ed.

    Thanks for the interest.

Yes, I'm planning on keeping the arm rests and window cranks as separate parts.

If you really think that it would be worth while to cast these, I would be more than happy to farm them out to you for that purpose.......as long as it doesn't take too long to make the molds.

I need them back to finish the model! :D

Let me continue to get these parts all to the level that I think that they need to be and we'll see what we can do.

I'm no resin master, so I'm just wondering if it would be okay to make molds from them with primer on them?

I really want to have them all primed to be certain that they are up to snuff.

Just to reiterate, these are not professionally made parts by any stretch!

There will undoubtedly be inconsistencies between parts. (left and right door panels not exactly the same for instance)

They are all pieced together individually, so they will not be exact.

But, they will be engineered to fit the Coronet body well, and will be a fairly good ready to drop in alternative for anyone who's looking for a hard top interior with a little more detail.

    Talk soon!

    Steve

Guys..... this would be great ! Ed, I’ve purchased quite a few pieces from you and each one was absolutely beautiful with high quality. On top of it your customer service was outstanding as well. Steve, I absolutely love watching your builds and your attention to detail, skill and gorgeous finished product really drives me to make each model better than the last. If you two guys collaborate I only see great things ! Put me down for 2 sets lol.

I was thinking more along the lines of a forum member who more or less “dabbles” with resin casting, but could do a satisfactory job, enough to offer a few examples to other members and friends without going commercial on the whole thing. I’m not interested at all in making any profit from something like this. My only interest is to help out. These are by no means professionally done masters. More along the lines of a “home brew”. 😁

    Steve

I know exactly what your saying. Too many times I’ve spent time mastering a part that I never copied and wish I had done so ( ie my Dick Landy hemi oil pan with the pass through). With that being said it is not that I didn’t try my hand at casting my own. It’s just that the results weren’t up to any acceptable level in my opinion. I know practice makes perfect but I just don’t have the need to cast often enough. The beautiful job and hard work you have done on the 68 interior to me is a perfect example that deserves to be cast. If I did have the skills I would’ve gladly cast it for you. Hopefully someone on here can help. I’d gladly help chip in anyway I can. Even if a group of us that are interested  chips in to fund the supplies to cast?!   So, did you decide on the color combination of car yet? For me that sometimes is the hardest part of the build lol

  7. Randy,

to be honest from reading through what everyone has posted already there seems to be many good ideas. My first thought was like what some have posted already, get the stuff into kids hands and put a smile on their face as well as possibly keep future generations interested in what is such a great hobby. I’m also sure that there is stuff in your stash that many of us would be interested in but how to choose who and what I suppose could be tricky. I also understand your sentiments on the troubles of selling. At the end of the day go with your heart and trust your instincts and the stuff will end up in the right places with people who truly appreciate the stuff.

I'd turn that '68 Coronet into a hardtop. Is the Fairlane a '67?

I’ve already got 2 hardtops so this one is staying a vert. Specifically it’s going to be a replica of the real car my father once owned as a kid. The fairlane is a 66 original annual with the correct roof. Likely going to be a day two car. I’ve got two more that had various degrees of body damage I’m in the process of fixing now but I’m trying to locate 2 more sets of taillight bezels and lenses but thats proving to be difficult lol

Thanks Charlie, you should. Royal plum was a cool one year only color. My pics don’t even do the color justice

GoodbuildNY - that is a fantastic build and very nice attention to detail!

I bought this kit a few months back and now look more forward to building it thanks to you sharing your work.

The rear end details of the taillights, moldings and SS panel look so very sweet....

    Thanks man!

Thank you Steve. It’s always a great compliment to know your work has inspired others. During your build if you have any questions or are looking for reference material just let me know. I’d be glad to help.  Dave

  14. Thank you to everyone for all the compliments. I’m glad I could share the model with you all on this great forum. Hopefully I’ll see some pics of your 67’s soon. I will say, just a heads up if you haven’t built this kit before that the rear suspension is a little tricky.

  15. Well I finally dragged this one across the finish line.... and it was a LONG time coming!!! This is based on the 90’s  ? Issue. Blue box art. This kit for various reasons was put on the back burner over the years but I finally worked up the ambition to finish it. Should of been a candidate for bring out your dead. Anyway, it’s finished in MCW royal plum with a red interior. It’s by far not my finest work and definitely has a few flaws but considering what its been through I’m ok with that. It’s a high quality driver lol. I tried to keep it at least neat and clean and keep detailing to a minimum.

They come ready to use, but be careful as they are very thin and must be handled gently being more prone to tearing than kit decals.  They look fantastic when applied, though.  You probably already know that like other aftermarket decals they have to be trimmed closely to the artwork because the carrier film covers the whole sheet.

Thank you so much Curt for the reply. I’ve used other aftermarket brands before but never Keith’s. I just ordered some and wanted to make sure I handled them properly. Have a merry Christmas
