  1. Guys...I just have to repeat my earlier comment....what a fantastic body of work! So many fine models I would love to have in my case.... Here's one more to keep the thread going. This one was built in late 1969 and debuted at the 1970 Detroit Autorama MPC "World's Largest Model Car Contest". The chassis (with a different body at the time) won "Best Detail" at that event. The chassis was a working replica of a real 1.1 scale funny car that had what was called a "Hydra-Slide" chassis. Basically, a hydraulic ram could adjust the engine setback at any point prior to each run, allowing the driver infinite and immediate adjustment to track conditions as he pulled to the line. And yes, the feature still works on the model (as you can see below). The second (Mustang) body as shown was completed a few months later as the original body (a 1970 MPC 'cuda) suffered the results of rushed bodywork (to complete the model prior to the contest) and was later written off as non-recoverable. - Here are a few photos and a link to the album with around 17 pictures of the model. http://public.fotki....mustang-funny-/ Thanks for looking....TIM
  2. My LHS (in Michigan) also told me last week that it is an issue involving the formula of the paint, and that the State of California legislation involving carcinogens figures into it. The Hobby Store source said that, when combined with the Japanese Earthquake (and, presumably, the non-availibilty of certain paint pigments), the entire situation has prompted Tamiya to do a complete re-think of their spray paint lineup including the formulas and paint colors. Although this source sounded credible, I'm taking this as semi-informed hearsay rather than fact. That is, until we hear the real story from Tamiya themselves. TIM .
  3. In the 1960's world of drag racing, for a while the boat drags were nearly as popular as the pavement drags. Often the same builders and drives competed in both series, and swapping engines between the two genres was a frequent occurence. Here's a Revell Hemi Hydro, narrowed, real wood hull deck, with Pontiac 389 power and considerable detailing added. There's a how-to article on this one somewhere in the Model Cars Mag in-box..... Several more Boyd water drag racers at the link....thanks for looking....TIM http://public.fotki....yd-model-boats/.
  4. Here's a link to an album of every Gasser model I've ever built....stretching from completion dates in the mid 1960's to just last year....thanks for looking...TIM http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/boyd-gassers/
  5. Here's a photo of the updates to the AA/SR model I built in the mags a year and a half or so ago....new headers, new push bar, added parachute and wheelie bars, and other added details. More photos of this at the Boyd Door-Slammer link in the post immediately above....thanks for looking. TIM
  6. Here's a few Boyd Drag Racing Door Slammer photos....this is a '70 Challenger built in the format of the Ohio George Montgomery Mustang Gassers....started in 1969 as an MPC Contest Entry, but not finished until around 1987..... More Boyd Drag Racing Door Slammers at the link.....thanks for looking. TIM http://public.fotki....drag-racing-do/
  7. Here's a few from my files.... Built from 1970-72, heavily modified '70 Charger body; entire frame and interior scratchbuilt to replicate Gene Show's '70 Challenger FC (completed about a year before the JoHan Gene Snow FC kit came out...winner Best in Show, 1972 MPC National Customizing Championship contest in WAshington, DC. . More Boyd Funny Car models at the link, including several projects that were never completed, and some projects built this year. http://public.fotki.com/funman1712/boyd-scale-funny-cars-/boyd-funny-cars-models/ Thanks for looking...TIM
  8. The '32 grille has been in all issues of the AlaKart, from the start back in 1962. The Mod Rod version was identical to the original Ala-Kart kit except for decals and box art, IIRC. TIM
  9. What a superb group of drag racing models, on every page of this thread! Congratulations to you all.....TIM
  10. Dennis....really sharp build and great explanation as well. As you probably know, I love this building style and I think you captured the spirit of this type of car and model perfectly. As for plug wires (or not), build to suit yourself first I think the model looks great as it. TIM BOYD
  11. Lyle...very cool. I don't recall mine being that difficult, but I was never happy with the location of the front axle and the axle was too narrow to boot, always had that on my rebuild list. On the other hand, I ways always pretty pleased with the full-fendered version. Hey, if you've gotta put a Chevy in a Ford rod, the 409 is WAY cool way to go. Just a very inventive build here, hope you can bring it to the NNL Nats....Best regards...TIM d
  12. Thanks everyone for your feedback...looking at my Fotki site stats it appears that quite a few of you clicked on the above and went to the site for the full how-to details. Summarizing the paint approach briefly (you can go to the site if you want more details), I used a nine-color spray can paint fade comprimsed of Testors One Coat Metalflake-style Lacquer spray paints over the Silver Metalflake color in the same paint line, topped by One Coat Wet Look Clear, rubbed out with Tamiya Rubbing Compound and finished with The Treatment Model Car Wax. The panels were taped off with Tamiya masking tape before the nine color fade was sprayed. Best regards and thanks again....TIM
  13. It's one of my most favorite 1/25th scale drag/ski boat models, and the subject of my first On-Line How-To. Just click on each image at the attached link, and the 28 how-to steps are displayed individually. There are also about 15 or so out-take photos of the completed model. Here's the link to the how-to steps. Thanks for looking.....TIM My link
  14. Thanks everyone for your comments. And Jim, gotta tell you that it was a great time, but it would have been even better if you had been with us. One of these years....(I hope!). Best....TIM
  15. My link Pictures at the link....thanks for looking....TIM
  16. Wayne....I have several sets of these in my competition decals box....if they aren't from Slixx, maybe they came from Jack Smith at Top End Decals......TIM
  17. Mal....that one is really, really cool. Great choice of subject and great build. TIM
  18. Gary, very very sharp model of a way cool subject. Congratulations. TIM
  19. Strongly, strongly agree with all of you who suggested an accurate, 1/25th scale '70 'cuda. TIM
  20. Wow. That one is a little too close to home. Transported me back to the day when the '71 Charger SE was my favorite car....and then 3 years later when I ordered my own '74 Road Runner which was based on the same platform as that '71 in the video.....and the guy's last name is even Boyd.....cool video, thanks for posting. /TIM
  21. Slixx Decals has the Shores&Hess decal set....TIM
  22. I'll try not to be inflammatory here, but this thread is just one more example of why a truly correct 1970 Plymouth 'cuda should be near or at the top of the list for consideration of newly-tooled 1/25th scale kits. I've done everything I know how, to behind the scenes, to promote this idea. Who knows, maybe someday it might take hold...then again, maybe not. For now, I strongly agree that the best approach is starting with an MPC 1970-74 'cuda, or the Jo-Han/Testors '71 'cuda shell. Either way, good luck with your project! TIM
  23. Tim....great job. All your extra effort on parts like the headers and the radiator supports really shows off well. Thanks for showing us.....TIM BOYD
  24. Link to about 130 pictures taken yesterday at the Billetproof North event, which moved a year ago from somewhat primitive facilities in Davisburg, Michigan, to a terrific site for a car show just across the Huron River from Depot Town, Ypsilanti (known to car guys as the location of the world's longest running Hudson dealership. Enjoy....TIM My link
