Body color down! Saw this album with a bunch of pics and decided to go for blue: https://www.garaget.org/?car=422313 Body will sit a minute before second coat. Was gonna go for red wheels, but the blue color mix had more metallic than I expected, it's almost candy (I guess?), so still deciding on wheels. Also got most of the "steel" bits done (roll cage and the nutty demo derby bars/panels). Steel bits were straight Semi Matte Aluminum. Body color was a 5:1:1 Blue, Silver, Pure White. I tested the mix by brush and the metallic silver didn't pop like it did when airbrushed.

Lol just saw the engine on my PC screen. Covered in sanding dust I didn't see on my phone. Also, have plans for some kind of shelving above the workspace, and that light is good, but in a bad spot. Need to find a better place for it so it's not in the way. Seemed fine when I set it up, but today is the first time I've painted with it there and didn't like it.

I think (hope) everything is now primed and ready for paint lol. Here's the post session workbench mess. Island was saved from a minor kitchen update we did a year ago, and the extension on the left was another small piece of countertop I saved.was gonna make a small router table bases or knife sharpening base out of it, but a couple 2*4 scraps screwed to the island overhang and that thing is surprisingly solid. Will be adding legs and a better shelf for the compressor and stuff. And the engine, ready to drop in when I get there and stick the air cleaner on top. I scuffed that chrome header getting it off the sprue and had meant for that edge to be on the inside towards the filter and invisible, but I guess I'll have touch it up with some engine red. Don't think I had an exact mix ratio for it...will have to read back this thread ?

Was originally thinking of using the body color I'll be using on the Tamiya RA272, a kinda off-white, ivory. But I have realized it might be too hot for the Vallejo primer, so I'm not sure. I'm hitting the hobby shop tomorrow to get a couple colors to round out my young collection. There is an impala that was raced in this thread that has an interesting color: https://www.impalas.net/threads/nascar-1965-impalas.3247/ Didn't get many days with time to work the last couple weeks. Just getting bits off sprue and sanded so I can have one last prime session for everything before paint and assembly, and also expanded my workspace a bit, got an organizer tray for holding parts orderly.

Finally laid some color down this morning! Black is a color, right? ? Did a couple bits (seat and steering wheel) in just a gloss black. Did the interior shell, chassis and a bunch of other bits in glossy metallic black. Color mix was 10:2:1 Mecha pure black, metallic medium, gloss medium with 4 drops each thinner and flow improver. I think the metallic medium requires either more thinner, improver, pressure or some combination. Was getting some flow irregularities and had to keep blasting it through off model to.clear it, bit when cleaning the needle and nozzle looked fine after my normal hot water cleaning cycle.

Thank you! I did paint some bits on sprue, have to do a bunch of cleanup, and then re-prime them anyway, so yeah. Some preassembly will be the way going forward ? Hopefully my mornings this week will be getting color on the bits. One thing I have learned is I need more space ? Would be nice to have paint setup to one side and assembly in another. I thought having that box be able to slide back would clear enough room, but not really.

Not an immense amount of progress, just clean up of mold lines after priming and repriming. Hopefully cleaned up well enough. Did get the engine block and transmission painted. Airbrushed the block (a 5:2 of Mecha red and bright orange to try and get that old school color. Hand brushed the transmission with I think Sea Grey and a little bit of metallic medium.

Omg that looks amazing! So much detail and diddly bits ? F1 got me back to modeling so I'm eager to see this come together.

Well that's awesome! Hopefully my learning will help others make a good build. I read somewhere on here (after grabbing the kit) that these modified stockers are a bit of a bear because of the age of the molds. Like that transmission...I briefly considered going to town and trying to smooth it out, but I think I have enough to learn with the airbrush and some simpler build skills.

Did some preassembly yesterday on the engine block, and scribed the door and trunk panel lines. Primed the body, engine block, chassis and interior this morning. Made my own gray primer with a 5:1 white:black mix of the Vallejos. Definitely need to practice up on consistent lines/strokes, and the spoons and forks the other day did not prepare me for the intricacies of the engine and detailed areas ? Not sure if I like pre-assembly of the engine bits. Might do a second practice kit before I do the RA272, painting on the sprue more to see how I like it. But it's fun!

My first airbrush practice was a blast! Realized the Tamiya paints would need ventilation while I was standing at the hobby shop, so I pivoted and scouted the Vallejo racks for approximate color comps (except the TS-7 body color- will just do the body outside :p) These spoons were two in white primer and two in black, went over the first and third with red, and the second and fourth with red adding the Metal medium. Anticipate I'll be making a journal of sorts for the mixes and the pressures they sprayed better at. The metal blended ones didn't really well at 40 vs 30 for the primer and unblended red paint. I grabbed one of the AMT 66 Chevy Modified Stocker kits as my practice kit and will try to match the part colors to the RA272 kit so I get a feel for how those parts will come out.

Morning! I built a little (badly) as a kid, and recently decided to get back in for F1 models. Girlfriend got into watching F1 with me this year and while looking for things to decorate the home office with, I decided I wanted to give F1 modeling a go, among other subjects. She got me the Tamiya RA272 kit and a tool set, I've decided to take the mini plunge with a decently reviewed airbrush kit, I have a full shopping list for the local hobby shop to get all the paints, and I'll grab a practice kit while I'm there to cut my teeth (along with some plastic spoon airbrushing :P) Also have several reference websites for the RA272 bookmarked, which opens my eyes to a whole new appreciation of the machine and it's history. Have already seen a bunch of fantastic stuff here.
