MM's Smoke Grey Pearl/S-52924
wdcav replied to wdcav's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cool! I do hope you have a photo or two. I'm extremely interested in this color. -
Thanks for the input Ismael. You know, I'm thinking I will just keep them yellow. It's really making the mesh screens pop. I'd imagine if they were black, the detail would be somewhat lost. Besides, if I bought the real car, I'd get them body colored somehow, for the $$$ I'd be paying, I want it my way.

Love this project. Keep going! I only wish I had the nerve to learn to stripe like that. Just don't think I can make it look like that.

Update on the Ferrari F430. I put it away for several months (actually it was collecting dust on a shelf). So the other day I got it out and did a few things to it. Now it's mocked up at least. Body isn't glued on, front inner grill isn't in it's final place. No taillights, no side windows or windshield. Interior needs touched up. I still need to paint the front scoops black (maybe, I kinda like the yellow more), along with the window trim. Need to paint the front scoop opening lips black because I dremeled out the cheesy molded in mesh screens, you can see the white plastic lip because I didn't touch it up after cutting through the plastic. But I replaced all the crappy mesh screen decals it calls for with real mesh that I had left over from some Tamiya armor kits. Looks awesome, but now I need to paint in the areas inside the body shell black so you can't see the interior of the model. Really love the real mesh, lovin' the whole outcome in fact. Help me choose whether to paint the front bumper scoops black or leave them yellow. The real deal is black, but the yellow is making a good case for itself..

Has anyone used this color? Does anyone have any pictures of it on a project? Thanks.

wdcav replied to modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My dogs know to stay the hell away from me when I'm working on my models. But sometimes I will keep one of my crested geckos crawling around my shoulders while I'm puttin around with something. I have 11 of them right now, so I like to give them some out-of-the cage time. And they make me laugh while I work. -
Except for a 69 Camaro I'm helping my gf build (her first model), I don't build older cars. I just turned 27 weeks ago, so never lived to see the older cars except at Auto shows. I'll see about getting a shot or two of the red version up. The Trans Am is actually teal, but very very green in person. It matches very well to this color. And by the way, that picture was taken in my town! I live in Tipp City OH, and if you ever attend the Trans Am Nationals that take place at the Dayton Airport, you'll get to see my town. Each year when they all arrive in the area they have a Cruise In in the historic part of my town. They shut down main street and some side streets and line them with all generations of Firebirds. Usually get 400+ cars in the show, including mine. While mine is only a Formula (which looks more like the V6), I still got the LS1 under the hood. Check my signature line at CarDomain to see pics of mine. I have pics of it in the Trans Am Nationals Cruise In as well on there. If the gf hadn't gotten me the Escalade, something bad would happen to it. I could have done better. But thanks for looking guys!

I was photographing my USS San Fransisco for modelwarships.com and thought I'd grab a few of my previously unseen builds. Here's three I have in my stash that never made it to film (as it were, being digital). WS-6 The Trans Am I got on clearance at Hobby Lobby. I already had one that I painted red to match my real life Pontiac as closely as possible. So for this one, I cut the t-tops out and also dremeled the inside of the rims out so that you can see thru them, instead of that silly chrome backing they come with. (I did the same thing to the red model, except with the factory 16"s.) It's painted with MM acrylic Teal. I initially had the interior black like my car, but with the tee's out it looked plain, so I added some Navy 1941 Light Gray as seating surface inserts. I also kept the A pillar body color instead of the black seals on the real car, looks flashier. I hate black trim. Oh, I forgot to paint the fender vents black I noticed, in case anyone wonders. The Camaro I got a couple years ago or so when it first showed up on the shelves. Painted it to match then the only Camaro out, which was the silver concept. The paint didn't shine up well, it's a really hot silver from Model Master's Custom laquer line in 1/2ounce bottles. The Escalade I got for christmas from the gf (I smell a conspiracy here, models at christmas and models on my birthday, I think she's trying to keep me from buggin her). I absolutely love Chevy Avalanches and Cadillac's White Diamond Pearl tricoat paint. So my loves were merged and I painted it Bright White from a MM rattle can (mistake, wish I'd just airbrushed it) and then overcoated it with MM Gloss Clear Pearl. It didn't turn out bad, but I could have done better if I'd trusted myself to use the Badger instead. Dunno why I did it like this now that I think about it. But the Pearl doesn't show well on camera, yet looks nice in person. The interior was painted a Dark tan/leather mix on most surfaces. Then I got a two tone theme going with some of the Dark Tan mixed with Neutral Gray to make a very khaki looking color. Used that on the seating surface inserts and top of the center console, and parts of the door panels. Cell phone pic, but you can kinda get the idea. All in all, my ship came out better.

Shading looks nice. Pastels are the way some of us ship modelers add weathering to our paint jobs. Looks good on car interiors as well I see.

Yeah. But it works so well.

Here's group pics of what's on my table. The Viper is nearly finished with only a few details missing and permanently attaching the rockers/side vents, despite being sat on recently. My gf got me the Ferrari for my birthday in March, and it's coming along nicely. Thought yellow would be an interesting and unique color for it. And then there's a recent addition, the 69 Camaro RS, which is just being mocked up for the most part. Forgive the dust specks on the Viper. It's been sitting for a few days and it's started a collection.

Being I have several projects going at once, I've got parts of kits laying all around here. Usually I work on these in the seclusion of a spare room, but decided I was happier off in front of the tv while I did some minor work on several projects (USS San Fran. , Ferrari F430, 69 Camaro, and 06 Viper SRT). So admittedly, I didn't have everything stashed around in perfect spots, and may have been using a seating surface to sit down the car while flexing my fingers. So someone, who'll remain nameless, comes along, says one word or so to me, and proceeds to SIT ON MY VIPER!!! Snapping off the driver side mirror (this isn't the first for the poor mirron on the Viper), snapping a front wheel loose, and popping the body apart from the chassis. GRRRRR! Everyone knows what I'm doing and can see the mess I have around me of box tops, paint bottles, tools, and instruction booklets. How can one full grown person decide it's a good idea to sit among that kind of mess? Thank god for my heavy use of Future, as it took the nasty scrapes inflicted to the finish. They polished out extremely well, not even knowing the damage had been done. But the mirror will never be lucky, this is the second time someone has taken it off for me. -
My gf recently painted a small R/C car and then cleared it with future. One day I got my polishing pads out and had at the roof. By the final 12000 pad, it was looking very nice indeed. I was under a multi bulb hanging light, and on the other parts of the car, you could only see the light as a whole gleaming off the surface. On the area I polished out, you could see the reflections of each individual bulb. It looked spectacular, and I'm going to try it again on a 1/24 car in a day or two. Admittedly, hers hadn't self leveled very well and had some texture to it beforehand. The car I'm looking at trying it on setup like glass.

Here's my progress on the main body shell so far. This is it after the paint was polished down, ending with 12000 grit, and then a coat of unpolished Future on it that's dry in the pics. I'll probably polish the future, decal it, and seal the decals over with another heavy coat of Future polished to shine. The pictures don't do it justice right now. The second pic you can kinda make out how "wet" it looks, but it's 100% dry. I finally got so frustrated with the trunk piece that I stripped it down and you can see it behind the car in one of the pics, going back to primer. I'm hoping I can get it to come out better the second time and get it matched up to the body nicely.

Sorry, should have mentioned the paint brand I guess. I use MM acrylics. This time around, True Blue Pearl. Fine color, just horrifying to fix. I'll try that next time, rounding off the edges before painting. I can sure tell you this Viper is full of spots that just don't like me.
-
I've got this Viper body I'm working on, and kind of using it as an experiment. I've polished it up real nice, finishing with 12000 grit pads. Problem is I've been having a really rough time rubbing thru the paint on edges and corners. And since the 06 Viper is full of edges, it's been kind of tough. No huge spots, but little lines of gray at the very tip of sharp corners, like the inset body vents, rear of the roof line, spoiler leading edge. So I got out a very fine brush and touched the spots up delicately. But at the end, the spots don't shine right, so I CAREFULLY tried to polish them up as well, leading back to a rub thru, as this paint just doesn't seem as tough the second time around. It's a vicious circle at this point. Anyone have tips on how to fix this, blending it with the rest of the awesomeness? Also, what's the absolute best way to prevent this? I was as careful as my technique-challenged hands could muster, but still have spots. I was thinking that before overall body coverage, I could put several thin layers over edges and tough spots before painting the body, tracing the airbrush around the spots I know will be likely problems. That way the paint would be thicker there when it comes time to polish. Is that a likely remedy or a waste of time?

So I got the Revell 06 Viper SRT10 a couple weeks ago to fiddle around with while I work on my USS San Francisco kit. I had a beautiful primered body, and the first coat or two went on nicely, lightly sanded that down, and put a heavier coat on, and it came out absolutely gorgous. But then... for some stupid reason I decided to tamper with success. I shot another coat on, and it didn't come out well. I got greedy and now I'm not as nearly happy with it. Man, why do I do such things? Anyone else end up doing dumb things like this?

Air Brushing
wdcav replied to Semi Trailer Mechanic's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've had those problems with propel cans and my cheapie testors brush. Everything from the freezing up of the tip, to sputtering of cold liquidy propel. I've found that just moving the can around before using it can stir it up and make it spray ###### out. Before use, I had to leave mine perfectly still, careful not to move it at all or face the consequences. But as others have suggested, a compressor really changes the works. My gf has a badger compressor and a Badger Crescando (spelling?) brush, and I've been attaching her compressor to my testors brush and it was working much much better then bottles. But now I've even gone the extra step and just swiped her brush and started using it and liking that setup even more. So get a compressor, and get acustomed to your current brush and then later I'm sure you'll see the light. -
Most of mine end up not turning. But the one I have that's notorious for rolling around is my Corvette z06. I had to strap it down with twist ties after an incident.

I use: I bought this several years ago now, and it always served it's purpose. It only lays down a huge wide pattern, but makes for great large surface work like one color car bodies or spraying the hull of a battleship. I'm cheap, and it works for me. And it got even better when my gf bought her Badger 175 and the Badger 180 compressor, cuz I swooped in and attached my cheap junk to her compressor. Though I was thinking of upgrading eventually to that Testors Mighty Mini.

What Car Do You Wish To Be A Model That Isn't?
wdcav replied to Clay's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd love to see more modern and more everyday cars. I'd love to see my daily driver (01 Grand Am GT) get a model, I think it'd look cool as a model, and I could set it next to the red Trans Am I did to semi-recreate my 2002 Firebird Formula. It'd be like parking my garage on a shelf. The upcoming Pontiac G8. Pontiac Solstice GXP or Saturn Sky Redline, and not just the awkward looking Maisto diecast Solstice. Even a Cobalt SS supercharged coupe. The all new CTS sedan or its upcoming Coupe. While I bet it happens eventually, the new Dodge Challenger would be hot. Why there isn't one yet and there is a new Camaro is strange. Audi S5 or a R8. Infiniti G35 coupe or the new Honda Accord Coupe GMT-900 style Chevy Avalanche and Yukon Denali. -
I really like the AMT single display case. You can still find them online I believe, even though I too heard they were out of production. Shame, I like mine and it was inexpensive. You can see it Here in the "Under Glass" section. I got mine for 5 bucks or so at Walmart. It included a mylar reflective sheet and twisty tie-downs with a variety of punch holes on the base plate. I'm also interested in what brand everyone else is using for single display cases. Locally, I have no variety at all. Walmart discontinued their model section entirely, Hobby Lobby and Michaels don't have any display cases, and I have no hobby shops around me.

Optical illusion I'm hoping, they are actually MM acryl turn signal amber and look yellowish-ugly in person. Maybe I should have taken the case off to photograph it. Not sure what you mean off center, but I didn't have any problems with the wheels looking right. Wheels sit nicely inside the wheel wells and look about right. Everything went together great without any modifying or tweaking. Gotta say Revell made a great kit on this one quality wise. I think I'll build another one and try for Sunset Orange Metallic. This one was actually based on the old blue, LeMans Blue Metallic, not the blue I originally pictured, but it nearly matches either curiously. Thanks for the great comments guys!

Thank you for the compliment. It's actually MM Acryl Arctic Blue Metallic, and it's a great color. I saw a regular C6 the other day wearing blue, and I just thought "that is soo close!". We can be friends, but you might not wanna after you hear that my avatar isn't meant to be a compliment for Toyota.
