1/25 Revell '90 Mustang LX 5.0 2'n1 Special Edition
Brett Barrow replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I get .72" (18.3mm) with my calipers, and 2.5* of b-pillar angle (didn't someone say the b-pillar was too vertical?) Would put it ~1.5" low in the roof. Almost every model kit ever made is a little low (usually 1-2") in the roof, when done well we don't even notice. Most kit designers come from a background in illustration and the old illustrator's mantra - "longer, lower, wider" is pretty much the kit designer's mantra, too. But it does appear that the window opening is shortened, too, which totally plays against the longer, lower, wider philosophy and might be where the oddness is coming from. I'll be interested to see how this kit looks after it's painted and the trim is blacked out, it might not look too bad. edit- just looked through some 1:1 pics and now the kit window looks longer... Need to quit looking at this thing and let my eyes rest for a day or two! -

All I want to know is what is this measurement - from outside of trim to outside of trim: -
Great information, cut and pasted! Thanks for that, I was just going to post a engine colors question before I dug into mine.

What I find funny is that Revell's 50 Olds is "chopped" about the same amount as this kit (~1 3/4") and most folks consider that an improvement on that bubble body That was apparantly done intentionally so that if/when they did a convertible or Holiday hardtop those future variants could share the windshield. That "chop" certainly hasn't hurt sales of that kit, and I doubt the Mustang's overall sales will be affected by it much, either. -

Why are we comparing a product to a service? There's no contract involved, nobody gave Revell any money up front. If it ain't good enough, don't buy it, it's that simple. People will take the time to post photos of the kit's contents (you're welcome, everyone ) so that folks can make an informed decision whether or not to buy the kit. Please, comparing a $25 model to a $5000 housepainting contract? C'mon man... -

And here's a little animation I slapped together showing parallax due to differing focal lengths and why you can't always compare photographs unless you exactly match the perspective, focal length, and focus point. Not that I'm saying that the kit's roofline is right, in fact I'm not going to participate in this discussion at all, just going to leave this here and walk away... And here are the individual frames I used. -

Here's a few more shots you guys can play with... My first profile shot wasn't from the best perspective. Please use these for any future doodling... -

I'll take a few more shots of the body from different focal lengths and focus points, it might make a difference, but it does appear lowered. Could be selective compression on the designer's part (I know it drives some people nuts when I bring that up, but they do it and have been doing it since the dawn of modeling...) -

Peter Jackson (director of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) likes modeling so much he started his own model company making 1/32 WWI airplanes, Wingnut Wings. They're spectacular, which is to be expected when you don't have to turn a profit or be a major source of income for your owner... -
Could be that they're just going to a "one-brand" philosophy and just eliminating the brand names. A lot of the colors are showing up on their website under new categories (with the same old Floquil and Polly Scale stock numbers, even), but that could just be where they're putting them while their stock sells down. I'd recommend that if you like Floquil or Polly Scale, stock up, you never know how it'll shake out exactly.

Well, mine came off a shelf. Of course, I didn't pay full price for it (I work there part-time on weekends), but it was briefly on a store's shelf... -

If you don't mind crappy cell phone pics and the parts being covered in pizza sauce fingerprints, I can have some up in about 15 minutes -

I believe they did - -
They did, about a year ago. Some of the old Boyd colors were renamed and moved into the 1/4 oz square-bottle range, there are a few new 1/2 oz Model Master colors, too. Testors hasn't done a very good job promoting the new stuff (they haven't had a print catalog in about 3 years.) If you go to their website, they're the colors that are represented by photos of actual paint bottles. There's all kinds of new stuff, "detail stains", a couple flip-flop pearls, really cool old-school "glitter" flake and a multi-color glitter. Maybe they've known that a massive re-branding was coming for a while and they've waited to start any kind of print campaign or print new catalogs? Testors has new lacquer primers I've been wanting to try, but haven't yet...
-
It is true, I was pretty shocked, they had just introduced a whole bunch of new Polly Scale railroad colors and totally re-did all their paint racks to a new modular design. I have to wonder if this is a Testors decision, or an RPM (their parent company) decision. Methinks it is an RPM decision, but that's just my opinion. Testors in general is also pricing itself into irrelevance if you ask me (and nobody did). When paints that have to ship across oceans (like Vallejo from Spain, Humbrol from England, and Tamiya from Japan) can all come in for a lower price by volume than a paint that's actually made in the country it's sold in then something's wrong with that picture.

RPP's started getting them today. I got mine! Woo hoo! The lightbar lens and taillight sprue is in clear red, but as has been pointed out, Revell will replace with clear ones and is now putting clear into the kits rolling off the production line. No problem for mine, since I'll be doing one of the USAF U-2 chase cars and will have to source a different lightbar anyway. I'll try to snap some pics and get them posted tonight or tomorrow night... -
Revell's recent new-tool Mini Cooper and Citroen 2CV are giving the equivalent Tamiya kits a run for their money, plus Revell was smart and chose slightly different versions, a non-S Mini and a 2CV Charleston. Doing a 67 1500 to complement Tamiya's 66 1300 is another smart choice.
-
Pretty sure it's a 67 1500, but I'm no Beetle expert. I think the Cabrio will be a later model. Here are the photos Revell Germany used in their catalog
