  1. I tried to edit the previous post and ran into an issue. Sorry fot he fuzzy photos of the transfer case. I do have better ones and I have made some improvements to the final product since i took them.
  2. I guess my philosophy would be that any part that isn't a kit part or resin part would involve some degree of scratchbuilding. Either modifying a kit part or starting with nothing would qualify. I have to thank the builders on this forum for pushing me to try new things. I have done some modification of kit parts and made some parts of my own in the past either to replace a part that got lost or broken or to make something work the way I wanted. They were crude but functional for the most part. After seeing some of the work here, it prompted me to carry my own work further! Case in point. with the "48 jeep pick up, I found that there wasn't a transmission available to replicate what I wanted to do with the LS engine and the LS intake wasn't what I wanted. in addition, the transfer case I wanted wasn't available in kit or resin either. So I set about making what I needed. With the transfer case, i laminated sheet plastic for the main case and set on it with files, and knives until I got the shape right. Then broke down the other parts into basic shapes that I could cut, file and sand into the correct form. Took a couple tries while I found out what didn't work so well, but overall I am plased with the finished product. No photos of the transmission yet, but the main case is almost done and I have started on the tailstock housing. Here is the intake so far, I wanted a mainfold that looked like an old tri-power but with fuel injection instead. Again it took a couple tries, but I came out with what I wanted. Now just need to make the throttle bodies, injectors and fuel rails. Thanks agian to the builders on this forum for the inspiration!! Steve
  3. Sorry about the blurry photos, I tried to get close enough to show the details but may camera won't focus as well up too close. I haven't had much luck with the casting. Not sure how to go about handing it off to a caster. I would love to have them available for everyone though.
  4. I finally finished the transfer case. Tell me what you think. No U joints right now so whatever driveshaft is needed can be used. I did drill it all the way through to help get it lined up with the transmission. Didn't have any straight on photos of the output side, so I kinda guessed at what I think is the speedo attachment on the output housing I followed the drawings I had so I made this a drivers side drop. Too late I figured out what I was making was the opposite of what I wanted. Figure to try to cast it and make the main case separate from the add on parts so I can make it a passenger side drop too.
  5. I am with you! empty nest syndrome my A**! .......... There are definite advantages to having the kids grown and gone. My youngest of three is 22 and finishing college. May be back for a while when he is done, but not for very long i would guess. Besides with the other 2 out on their own, my wife and I have plenty of room for the 2 of us.
  6. Great work from ALL of you! I am impressed with what you were able to accomplish in such a short time!
  7. I have a 12'X20' work shop and a very understanding wife. When we planned the house, I planned a workshop space. Had to build the house myself to get it, but It did work out. She has a 12 x 14 sewing room too, so she understands. Took me 15yrs to get the room started and as you can see from the pics, it isn't done. This is from outside the door. To the right side is a display case Main work space Panning to the left Shelves with some of the stash there. Added the TV this fall so I could watch the racing I like but the wife hates Opposite side of the room with the spraybooth At some point I will finish the room, but for right now, it gives me a place to work
  8. I just did an inventory with the purpose of organizing them so I could find what i wanted when i needed it.......that's my story and I'm sticking to it ......I have about 400 unbuilt kits located in at lelast 3 different rooms. Used to go to the Ertl factory outlet in Dyersville, IA about 3 times a year. Never left there without dropping between $50 and $100 . I swear I had plans for all of them when I bought them! Can't remember what those plan were any more, but I swear I plan on building them all...at least that is what I tell my wife. Bless her she never complains and I can't say anything when she spends money on things she likes.
  9. Looking for some help here guys. I know I saw an announcement somewhere about someone offering photo etch spring shackles. I was sure it was recently too. Figured at the time that I needed to write it down so I could find it again, but thought I would be able to find it again and didn't make any notes. Can someone please help? I have a couple projects that I need them for and can't find where I saw them. Appreciate any help!
  10. I must say I am impressed with all of you and your progress! I am enjoying watching the process. Keep it up!
  11. I like old trucks, and love this project.
  12. Thanks for your comments everyone, The Fuel Injection I found looks to be for Chrysler products. Haven't been able to talk to them yet but with the photos on the website, it looks to be indvidual injectors, not a throttle body injection. Buchey, In that case the title for the truck in my yard is wrong. This build is based on my 1:1 project. I have the real truck. My research has shown that at the time, a title wasn't issued until the vehicle sold. If my truck was a leftover '47 it would have been sold and titled as a '48. I don't think Willys made that many changes from year to year though. For the most part they only made minor cosmetic changes year to year and major changes about every 10 years. I have the differences in my notes someplace. At any rate, the grill on my truck is not flat, but has a "peak" to it. sticks out about 3 inches. I can post photos if you would like. Southpier, I am not that tech savy either but here goes: The truck is from RMR resin. www.frewebs.com/rmrresin/nf125.htm Unfortunatley the grill is not available from anyone. I am fortunate to have a good friend with mad skills who likes a challenge. He started with a description and photos, a CAD program and extra time at work. They are not available commercially. If I could figure out a way to duplcate them without a laser cutting tool, I would certainly do so
  13. Just foud a website that advertises 6 pack fuel injection. Cant tell for sure if it is TBI or individual injectors. Looks to be designed for mopar applicaitons F and B throttle bodies is the site. I will have to call them and get the scoop so I can make it work.
  14. I thought about a tri TBI set up too. with the right computer tune it should work the same as a Tri carb, but with better and more consistant control. Not sure if the individual injectors and 3 throttle bodies would work in 1:1. Like you said, none of the manufacturers have ever done it and the aftermarket only does multi carbs.
  15. Got the intake manifold made, now the question. that would only be throttle bodies I had originally wanted this to be a tri-power. But I do like the fuel injection so I am thinking about keeping the LS style fuel injection and adding the 3 "carbs" that would only be throttle bodies! One of the issues with the original 3 dueces was the difficulty in getting and keeping them tuned. With the advances in computerized controls we should be able to make this work right? What do you think? Comments please, thanks for looking. Steve
  16. Really liking this truck and the build keep up the good work!
  17. If you can find a telephone guy working on overhead wires, ask him/her for the wire they are replacing. I found out they can't reuse the wire they were replacing and got about 10ft of cable with probably a hundred wires in it for nothing. Multiple wire colors and more than a lifetime for me.
  18. I usually start the bodywork first since that takes me the longest. But at the same time I start with engine and drivetrain assembly. Plan is always for all the parts to be ready for final assembly at the same time, but it never works out. I always have everything ready but the body.
  19. New Photos and progress (even bad progress) to report. Thought I was had made great progress and was ready to post some photos of the completed drive train but instead I learned a new lesson last weekend...i was trying to replicate a later model transmission. New Venture 4500. Had the thing pretty well done. Not perfect, but obviously not the muncie 4spd I started with. Then I got the idea that since I wanted to cast it so I could use just the transmission, I had to fill in the voids in the bellhousing and transmission.....short version is that I tried to use liquid glue to melt scrap plastic to fill the void. didn't work out too well. too much of the liquid I figure since it made the whole thing soft. Managed to save the tailstock, but the rest was trash. Got online and ordered this great looking bell housing from Scenes Unlimited. It arrived today so I can start over with the Transmission. Last photo is of my start at an Atlas Transfer case. got the basic case shape pretty good i think, and working on all the rest of the added shapes. Got an intake for the LS started too, so that part is coming together also. Honey do list is caught up for the time being so I am hoping to get more time in the workshop. Thanks for looking, as always comments are welcome
  20. Thanks you all for your replies, Gives me some ideas to try!
  21. Maybe it's been covered here before, but I would like to know how everyone else keeps track of spare parts? I have boxes of stuff and can't ever find what I need nor could I tell what the parts were from in the first place. I do have wheels and tires separated out, but the rest is a jumbled mess.
  22. I am glad to see that I am not alone with decades old projects. no photos right now because I can't locate any of them. Everything got packed away in '95 so i could build a new house and move. 14 years later I finnaly got around to building a workshop in the new house and unpacking the models and supplies. I know there was a 4X4 blazer mud racer that was stalled because I couldn't find or make the tires I needed and a '57 Nomad that I cut about 3/4 inch out of the front fenders to shorten it for a transport vehicle, but my ideas didn't come close to my skills at the time. I think I am gonna have to search through everything and find those projects again. I will post photos if I can find them
  23. PM me and we can figure out a trade
  24. I probably have a windshield if you need one. I know I have at least one of the 72 kits that I have stolen the drive train out of.
