Consumer 3D printing on a faster track, as Stratasys buys MakerBot.. "Three-dimensional printing giant Stratasys Ltd. is venturing into the burgeoning consumer market for affordable 3-D printers by acquiring rival MakerBot Industries for $403 million in stock. Stratasys said the deal will enable the Eden Prairie, Minn., company to offer affordable desktop printers, which is Makerbot's specialty. The deal is yet another sign of the emerging market for consumer 3-D printers..." http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-stratasys-makerbot-3d-printing-20130619,0,3619218.story

I love this, and the broadcast will be running in the background at home, but like all Le Mans-style races, I get cross-eyed trying to follow multiple classes running different races at the same time.

Interior looks great, perfect finish for vinyl seats. But based on your 1:1 shot, wouldn't the cloth seat inserts need to be duller?

Mercedes 300 SL cabriolet (1/16 Italeri kit)
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
It sold VERY cheap -- $20.50. That's less than the regular Italeri kit usually goes for. Meanwhile, François, your kit is looking great. -
Careful ( ). There's a whole thread going on from those who don't appreciate this compliment. But those in the know recognize this as a very high compliment.

Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yes, the last picture of your engine shots is a 500K, where you can see the horizontal air filter on the other side of the valve cover. Don't be misled by the 540K shot with the red engine, or others with lots of chrome -- very customized by the restorer. Use satin or matte black for the cylinder heads and flat aluminum for the block/oil pan. -
One reason this place is so great!

I'm always surprised to see how many modelers who are noted in the magazine don't participate on this forum. -
More chefs-d'oeuvre. Fantastic.

The thing about this kit, which is a Cabriolet A, is that it's not accurate. It comes with vertical side louvers on the hood, and recessed undersides to the fenders. You can have one of those, but not both. With the fenders on this kit, there should be chrome horizontal vents on the sides of the hood, as on the Italeri tourer kit. Or, with these louvers, the fenders should have protruding lips outside the fender tops, as on the Italeri kit. You won't find a 1:1 version of this kit without those modifications. The big dilemma here is that in the Monogram 540K coupe kit, which I have, BOTH the hood side louvers and fenders need to be modified, All they did with this kit that is different from the roadster was to add a separate hardtop, and it's all wrong.

Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit

Rob, I have sent you a couple of PMs on this subject. -
Beautiful job. What's the display case -- an aquarium?

Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
There was a certain crossover period between the 500K and 540K, but it appears to me that your pictures with the vertical air filter are all 540K. Here's the factory manual 500K engine. -
Coming along great. And it's nice to see plug wires that aren't too thick.

Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Rob, Francois may have better reference than I do, but I have quite a bit and will be happy to send whatever you need. One thing I just noticed is that the air filter on this kit is vertical, meaning it's a 540K and not 500K. It should be horizontal as on the Spezial roadster shown below. (On Pocher kits, the engine and chassis are all 500K and not 540K as claimed.) You will find a lot of very nice detail shots at www.schlegelmilch.com When the home page loads, click on Automobile picture archive. Then, from the menu at the left, select Mercedes; for model, select 500K Special-roadster. You can view larger versions of the images if you register at the site (it's free). The Jo-Han kit is 1/25 and has the correct engine. (I have the Roadster Limousine -- hardtop coupe). For more reference, you can download (free) the Pocher instructions at http://www.modelmotorcars.com/html/useful_info/manuals/manuals_home.htm -
Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Good choice. As you'll see in this recently posted build in Under Glass, Monogram is definitely better. The Testors Italeri 540K Tourer might be slightly better than that, but requires a lot of clean-up. While the Heller classics are nicely done, their wire wheels leave a lot to be desired. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=76633 -
Very nice job. Any interior shots?

We need a glue tutorial that can be pinned. I know I would like a reference to see what works best for what application, in one place.

Superb decal work. How did you get them so crisp at such a small scale?

Bugatti Royale roadster Esders 1/24 conversion
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Someone is having severe delusions: a 1/8 scratch built Weinberg cabriolet for $55,000. Not particularly precise. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-8-scale-scratch-built-1932-Weinberger-Bugatti-Royale-by-giuseppe-da-Corte-/160806814841?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item2570d54479 -
scale chain sets for 1/9?
sjordan2 replied to Mike Kucaba's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
For what? A motorcycle? I've been looking forever for smaller scale chain for my 1/16 Bugatti, and all I can find is approximately 1/12 - too big for me - or about the same size from Grandt Line train supplies (check to see if they have larger sizes; they're all Delrin). I'd love to find something smaller. Check with Marvin Meit at modelmotorcars.com -- the Pocher 1/8 Fiat uses chain, and he may be able to help (and he will, he's a great guy). -
Thanks for reminding me about pins. That's one of the best tips I've learned around here.

So, where is this going? Stock or custom? Metallics would not be authentic for factory stock, since they weren't available until about 1926 and you had to be a big-bucks guy selecting the type of car you would spend that money on.

Bare Metail Foil - Which One?
sjordan2 replied to MILD's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Many experienced people on this and other forums suggest putting a piece of BMF over the desired chrome details, such as scripts, badging, etc., followed by paint, then by wiping the paint off the BMF area as desired. -
Mercedes-Benz 500 K 1936 Special Roadster, Heller 1/24 kit
sjordan2 replied to debaronFR's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looking good. Is the mesh on the air filter molded that way, or did you add it? Very precise. As for the wheels, Mercedes collectors just hate chrome wire wheels on this car, which were never sold by the factory that way in stock -- only special order. They prefer body color or silver paint. Be careful of PE wire wheels -- most that I see are for the Ferrari 1/24 GTO, and have larger and a much deeper dish for the rear wheels.
