    New York model stores?

    Hi folks, me and the wife will be visiting New York in a few weeks time and I have been given permission to model shop as long as they are not too far away from our hotel which is the Sheraton New York by Times square. Any info will be greatly received.

    I tried hitting a hobby store a few years ago when my wife and I went up to do the tourist thing. Never got around to it. And now my daughter lives in the upper west side of Manhattan for college and I go up regularly and I still don't find the time. Just so much to do and so little time to do it all.

    Surprisingly overwhelmed.

    A lot of hobbies are like this. All depends on what you want to do. I've become interested in model trains recently and stopped at a store yesterday and after talking to a few guys there, I left feeling the same. I have a complete train kit that was $50, looking around the store, thinking if I want to do it "right" I need a $1500 train. Lol. First world problems.

    We are from the east coast,Philadelphia. My parents decided it was a good idea to retire out west. They choose a old mining down 40 miles from Mexican border. They are back now, missed the family and all. We visited a few times over ten years and if I had to guess what it felt like to live on the sun, it would be Arizona. I am fair skinned and cold blooded, it was brutal. Good people though, my parents have better friends in Arizona in 10 years then they had in 50 years in Philadelphia.

    I am not a expert and I'm sure you will get some precise answers but for a quick rundown I will try and help.

    So it is a different compound or material used to make models in smaller production runs. Mostly from vendors who make models or kits per order in their home as a side business.

    I only own two different resin makers kits and both happen to be at the top of the resin world ( modelhaus and Morgan automotive detail) and they are very similar to plastic and far as feel and smoothness.

    Since resin is hand made and made to order kits can well exceed $75 for a quality piece.

    On the flip side their are some crude castings that will be body only for as little as $10 and than it is up to the builder to make or finesse it into a presentable model.

    Also a lot of resin production is in the form of parts for adding on to plastic kits to add detail or correct issues with accuracy.

    I've yet to build a resin kit so I can't comment on approach to building and in my research the only info I've gathered is you can only use super glue (ca glue) and wash well before applying paint.

    Slapped this one together. Used tamiya paint and after market wheels. Used bare metal foil. Painted interior one color with no detail.

    This is actually the first model I've built without getting glue or glue finger prints on the glass. I bought some jewelers crystal epoxy, bonds well and has a needle tip.
