italeri and revell frames
highway replied to guitarsam326's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, same here. I have three Italeri/Revell reboxes that all have broken framerails. -
If it is just a short extension like JT showed, I'd just get some plastic tubing either similar in size to the kit driveshaft and use that to make a new driveshaft and just use the kit U joints or get some just big enough to slide over the kit shaft and cut the kit shaft in half and insert into the longer tube. Now, if it is a little more extreme like this one I have in (forever) progress, then more driveshafts are in order. I added 7 1/2 inches to the frame, if I remember correctly. The white is the addition. I took these two bits from a wheel adapter kit (MRC or AMT IIRC) and fashioned a midship carrier bearing to attach the kit's original driveshaft to and still have to make a driveshaft from the engine to the carrier bearing. Also, to add strength, I added some square tubing to the top of the framerail to double as a sleeper mount.

Truck Kits You've Scored Recently
highway replied to Superpeterbilt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
X2!! The Roadway looks great, ready to hook up to a trailer or set of doubles and go! And if the mixer does hit the trade list, let me know. I'm already seeing the mixer on something else and a big heavy wrecker for the cab! -
Revell, great quality for over 35 years!
highway replied to highway's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Also, as my point of this thread, neither is expecting the correct vehicle when building what is supposed to be a replica. Whether some want to consider it "rivet counting" or not, as pictures have proved here and anyone who was at that time (or now for that matter) could tell, the vehicles Revell just slapped some "CHiP's" copyrights and pictures on were no where near the vehicle they were to represent! That would have been just as bad as MPC/AMT putting "Knight Rider" markings on a Camaro kit or using a 73 Charger for a "Dukes of Hazzard" General Lee! -
No, from what I have been reading here and elsewhere, the parts like wheels and interior parts are being replaced by the incorrect Cabrio parts trees. They are not just free extra parts.

Revell, great quality for over 35 years!
highway replied to highway's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
And that has to do with the topic of Revell having a long history of being incorrect with details in kits or incorrect kits in general how??? -
I'd be in line for those!! It ain't mean if it ain't green in my book!!

Do you or don't you?
highway replied to Tom Geiger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I tend to fall into both areas, and it all depends on what I am painting with and how I'm painting it. If it is an assembly that is going to be predominately one color, I will spray paint it, and everything, seen or not, gets painted like the top two left and bottom center frames in the opening post pic. I'm not going to waste time and masking tape to mask off the inner gas tank just to save a tiny amount of paint. That also goes for engines that I spray like this Hemi for an 09 Challenger: All of it got a coat of Hemi Orange (yes I know that is probably not prototypical, but it's a Hemi after all) and then I painted the transmission by hand and over the orange that had been sprayed on it. The same was true for the chassis, it was sprayed with gray primer (again probably not prototypical, but it's what I want) and then everything was highlighted and detailed. Even the inside of the body gets sprayed, even in areas like what the interior will hid and the trunk lid. This pic even shows that the inner wheel wells and the area under the seat got the entire paint treatment even though it won't be seen. And yes, I know the edge of the hood needs touched up! On the other hand, if I brush paint it, as I did on these seats from the same build, you can see under the seats didn't get painted. So, I guess I do lean more to the "paint it regardless" side, but also don't paint every little thing that won't be seen. I'd rather have more coverage that won't be seen than too little and have something not painted stick out like a sore thumb! -
Revell, great quality for over 35 years!
highway replied to highway's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is as laughable as Ponch's T/A!! No one will notice it's a Chevy and not got a stepside box!! -
Now, I know that I have read quite a bit here and around the interweb (REALLY NEED TO CUT BACK ON "FAST AND LOUD" ) about the "quality" of some of Revell's new offerings like the deformed roof of Mustang LX and the latest of modelers buying Golf GTIs and getting Cabrio parts and vise versa, but who knew they had this "quality" 35 years ago!! I stumbled across this researching some pics for another thread, and couldn't believe my eyes! Ummmmm.......is it just me, or is that not even close to the real car?!?! I guess it is at least "close enough", it is the right generation at least!!

just wandering about movie cars
highway replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here are some better pics of the Birds themselves. The early 70s, the car is a 72 by the description: The Shaker equipped 79 to 81 Bird, later Turbo equipped birds were similar but had the head looking to the driver's side and the flames extended up the Turbo bulge in the hood: And the special "Super Bird" for the 79 10th anniversary edition, same as the standard but larger and the wings extended to the fenders and was not confined to the hood. -

Here's a few I found thanks to a Google image search. I found not only the bird would be a challenge, but the hood as well. I don't know if it is a custom built piece or if it may have been a factory option, but the hood is a mix if the Formula and T/A hoods, the front scoops Formula and the shaker T/A. Also, as with most cars of this nature, all are different, as this close up does not have a hood bird: But this one does, and though the pic is small, it appears to have the correct early 70s bird: This one, which by the description was Jon flipping Ponch's Bird, has a totally incorrect 79 bird on it. Of course, not as incorrect as this pic I found!! That is clearly a 79 to 81 T/A, not a 70 1/2 to 73 as Ponch had, and clearly shows Revell has been making mistakes for over 35 years!! -
Casey, as Aaron said, it does vary by truck, but in your case two or three would be norm, and you could probably get by with the batteries you pictured. I know for my 1990 F350 diesel, it requires two group 65 batteries, which are close in size to the ones you have in the pic and could also be on the smaller end of batteries used in an LN. I know the guy I'd bought an old 83 Chrysler off of took a group 65 out of a newer (early to mid 80s) LN dump truck and threw it in the car! If it was the correct battery for that truck or not, I don't know, but it started the car great! EDIT: Also, some big rigs run 3 or 4, and the big rig versions are much bigger than even the large group 65. If you get the chance the next time you are walking around the automotive section at Walmart, it will give you an idea of the size difference. I know they carry up to deep cycle RV/Marine batteries and those would be close in size to a big rig battery and compare them in size to the group 65 battery,

just wandering about movie cars

YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!! I was watching CHiP's last night and the episode had some nice shots of his car and the wheels started turning in my head. 70 T/A+close to correct paint=great model idea! The only thing that I think may be a challenge is the hood bird, because I noticed in the episode I watched last night which showed the top half of it in a shot, the bird is a brownish/gold color. Unless there is one in the aftermarket or in one of the AMT annual kits, it might be hard to source, since the only easily attainable kits to build Ponch's bird is the Revellogram 70 1/2 T/A, and they only have the small bird for the nose beak, and I think later 77 or 78 birds may be a little larger and a slightly different design than earlier 70s birds. The birds are just like the cars, different eras have different birds, some more noticeable than others like wing size and shape to the less noticeable direction of the way the bird is looking. I do think Ponch's bird would be an easier build than Rockford's though, since the 70 1/2 kit is a much easier find than the 74. -
Truck Kits You've Scored Recently

Yeah, and he gets his share of "I'll never get rid of this kit" kits off my shelves LOL! -
Believe me JT, it was even more gorgeous standing beside it, and it sounded just as sweet! My ex (who just happened to love chrome as much as me) seen it and started asking me about it. There was even one or two times I'd come home (since we only lived about a mile from the warehouse) and said she heard it coming and watched it go by!
-
Yeah JT, that is why I spent so much time hunting for pics online and kicking myself in the rear for not getting pics of it when I worked there!! I did find more, one or two may be small, some dummy saved thumbnails instead of the big pics (DOH!! ) but here they are. And I goofed, the floor was tiled to match the front fenders and not wood. And like I said, the owner Gary worked this truck!

Even though I haven't seen it in quite a while, at one of my former jobs I got to see this rig quite often. He hauled out of the warehouse I used to work at hauling cardboard and other shipping materials to a window plant in Paris, IL that the warehouse had a contract with. I also hauled the same to their WV plant, but my rig wasn't as pretty! I'm not sure of the year, but it was an old International 4300 not only decked out on the outside, but on the inside as well. I'll have to do some digging through old files to see if I have pics of the inside, but the dash was chromed out and it had a hardwood floor inside. I wasn't smart enough to make sure I had the camera with me, I had to do quite a bit of searching to finally find pics of this rig online.

**BREAKING** Arizona Department of Transportation is issuing a apology to all football fans. Seems the Patriots Team Bus was put Out Of Service during a safetyInspection. All but one of it's tires were severely under inflated. NFL sources confirm the team will be delayed while they arrange for alternate transportation.

Don't know, don't care, I didn't waste my time watching it. I was watching something much better, the "Dukes of Hazzard" marathon on CMT!

I'm sure all balls will be thoroughly inspected now!! I feel all balls should be inspected before and after use for proper pressure!
-
Actually he would be perfect, he could use his needle to inflate their deflated balls!!

Rack on front of big rigs, what is it?
highway replied to Roadrunner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not as bad as my Peterbilt blanket in the bunk of my Freightliner! -
Whoever is shipping to you is going to have to go to the post office and find out. It all depends on what part of Canada you are in (Canada is pretty vague as it is a large area to cover ) and where it is coming from in the States. I do know that about 5 years ago or a little longer, I had a pretty regular trading partner on another forum that lived in Edmonton and I live in West Virginia and it usually cost me less than $10 in shipping to send to him. There was even one time I bought him a kit on ebay to save him shipping, they wanted $25 for shipping to him directly and it only cost me $6 and about the same to then ship it to him.
