  1. This was a build that was inspired by a Bob Downie article. I had not built anything for well over a year, and I needed something to get me back into the spirit. I decided to build this model with no aftermarket additions - just detail painting and BMF. I offer my sincere apologies to Bob up front for copying his build, but they as they say - "Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery". I even tried Bob's technique of using a gel pen to create my own white walls. I love the end result.
  2. I have had problems with black paints(Testors and Tamiya alike) "easing away" from edges; door gaps, body panels, etc. Sort of like the results you get from candy colors. Harry, would acrylics and lacquers help with that problem?
  3. Hey Lyle, what kind of paint do you use on the tires for the white walls?
  4. Here are a couple of shots of a weathered Duster I did a couple years back. The wash is extremely thinned Flo-quil Grimey Engine Black. All I did was use a wide brush and let the wash pool where it wanted. The engine bay was weathered with Rust-all.
  5. Rob, I love the color combo! And I love the styling behind the cabin. I have to ask about the glass. It seems to resemble the "barely cuda" shown around here? Just curious. Also, is one of the members of your club a certain Tory? That "Coffin" with the monolith looks familiar.....
  6. Hey Virgil, I too have a bunch of little finger nail stencils with wacky patterns, but what about the zebra pattern you did below the belt line?
  7. Hello Rob and thanks for the kind words! The HOK paint was airbrushed. It is Orion Silver Metallic base covered by about 8 coats of Brandywine Kandy Basecoat. All of that is covered by 2 coats of clear. The rails and the block were airbrushed HOK paint as well(Solar Gold Metallic and Pagan Gold Kandy). Thanks for asking!
  8. So, is eModelCars no longer free? I just registered and saw that there are fees regarding sales.
  9. John, Those are great restorations! Makes me want to find a Blue Beetle myself!
  10. The chassis is finally coming together. Now I just need to run the coolant lines to the radiator. And I couldn't wait to see the colors together so I mocked it up again:
  11. Virgil, thank you for the kind words! John, how funny you bring up Tory Mucaro! His first Coffin is my inspiration on this build, and we have been in contact with each other during it! I consulted him on the paint.
  12. Well, the Coffin is back in the shop! I re-stripped the paint (again) because the primer seemed to react with the plastic and made it 'soft'. It just didn't feel right when I was sanding it for the base coat. So, when I stripped the primer, I found out that glazing putty will not withstand the 'purple bath'. so it was back to the beginning. (what an idiot). This shot shows the doors being installed with a couple pieces of card stock to make sure there is clearance with the running boards: And here it is with the color. Finally!
  13. I like the low stance!
  14. Beautiful build! I went to the Kdog website...... I couldnt find any info on those pinstripe decals
  15. So, to parrot everyone else, I love the flat head. And I love the body work......the louver trick gives me some great ideas...... But I would like to ask a stupid question. Did you make the engine stand? Or is it part of a kit? Thanks.
  16. OK, so after a ridiculously long hiatus, I am finally getting back to this project. I had initially wanted to do the bottom of the floor pan in Allclad; do a kind of over-the-top show rod chrome underside, but I really like the way the candy pagan gold frame looks against the gloss black, so I am leaving it this way. Does anybody have any reference pics for the type of master cylinder and clutch linkage you see on this chassis? The rear end was not molded complete. I didn't want to see any gaps either from the side or reflected in the black paint, so I will fill in the voids. I am not going bonkers on the engine; just some paint detailing and I will wire and plumb it. I DO need to raid the parts stash and come up with a pulley and alternator set, though......this is the pretty much all the kit offers for the engine
  17. So, what is up with the white tires? Are they resin?
  18. But the psychedelic paint job DOES work......Pat Covert pulled it off.....
  19. m408 (I would use your real name if it was posted ): Here is a photo of my set-up: And here is the layout for 2 booths cut from one 4x8 sheet of plywood: I used an 80cfm bathroom fan for the down draft exhaust. The booth itself is made out of 1x2 pine furring strips and 1/4" underlayment plywood for use under vinyl flooring. The 1/4 ply helps keep the weight down. After I made the layout plans and built the booth, I added a cut-out at the top for an aquarium light. I covered the hole with thin Lexan. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me! Russ
  20. You HAVE to vent to the outside!!! It is so easy to build up an "explosive" atmosphere in a confined space! Also, all of your solvents when airborne are heavier than the air in your apartment and will travel along the floor to a heat source (pilot light, etc) There cannot be any leeway here. Also, like Bill said, you must use a respirator with a filter (charcoal or equivalent). There just cant be any scrimping.
  21. I just wanted to thank you for the effort you have put forth on this forum! When there was a problem, you really stepped up. I am totally digging the set up and appreciate your work! Russ
  22. So I have noticed that just about every time I log back onto the Forum, someone has tried a different format! If I had a vote, I would pick a darker setup so it is not so stark Just my opinion, as if it matters.........
  23. Very nice color.....what is it?
  24. This is looking just fantastic, Harry! Good job!
  25. Gary, You are not working with resin are you? Just wondering.
