  2. It's no joke, Zeb. The seller bought 6 bodies from Reliable Resin and they're all terrible. He put the auction up to advertise the fact that Reliable Resin is a ripoff. You can read more about it at the Straight Line Modeler e-mail group on Yahoo!. On that group, one guy says he tried to return a defective body and Don of RR accused him of defacing it so he could get his money back. I have also been stung by unscrupulous resin casters. Just wanting to share your hobby with others is not enough. You have to make quality parts and have a little bit of business sense...even if that business sense is knowing that you don't really have a small business. If it's a part-time deal, just sell on ebay when you have parts made up. Don't advertise and let people send you money then give them excuses. When you take their money, you agree to give them a good product in a timely manner. Bad resin sellers deserve to be outed.

  5. Andy- Those are cool, but I'm looking for something that has loads of style and could be used a real work truck for a plumber today. I want to start my own plumbing company in a few years. I'd like to build a model of a "what if" work truck; "what if" business really took off and I could afford to have a custom truck made with modern everything and '30s art deco style?
  6. OK I found a tiny photo on Google but no info. It looks like I can get a good start using the Revell/Mono '37 Ford pickup, but I'll need to build a cargo box. Shouldn't be too difficult. The big question is the wheelbase. Does anyone know what it was? Art? What about reference photos? Thanks, Lee
  7. The only thing I have tried is mixing Mr Surfacer with lacquer thinner. I have sprayed it through an airbrush and applied with a paint brush. I think it makes a great "high fill" primer. I swear by it, but some swear at it.
  8. I'm looking for the equivalent of something like this. Was there such a thing? I don't think I've seen anything like that; only flatbed trucks and sedan deliveries. Thanks, Lee
  9. :evil: ALRIGHT Y'ALL THIS IS ONLY FUNNY FOR SO LONG!!!!! :evil: Just kidding. I do have a sense of humor. Jared- There are no good parts left. I want to say the tires are OK, but the whitewall inserts are distorted, so that's a no-go.

  11. I took this model to a contest in San Antonio last month: I left it in the back seat of my car and forgot about it for about 10 days. I figured it was no big deal...it's February, after all. This is what I found when I took it out. . . . . . . . . . . . . This really surprised me. I once stored models for a 18 months in a rental storage room. They had no damage. Just weird.

  14. Hey! Look who stopped by while I was writing! The Modern Dream Truck is still <ahem> "in progress". I built a few box-stock pre-war classics while in Afghanistan. I got back last year and didn't build anything for a good while. I'm finishing up a race car master for someone else. I've also got a couple of Duesenberg projects almost finished. When those are done, I'll get back to work on The Dream. I don't know if I mentioned it, but I got myself a Sherline lathe and mill. That will really help with some small parts. I also went nuts and got a South Bend 8x42 and Bridgeport 9x49 when I came home :shock: They're not set up yet, though. Hey I really dig your squarebird. Hey! A square bird for a square guy! hehehe just kidding.
  15. If you've been in the hobby for a while, you know who Mark Gustavson is. "Mercari" is a car he built in Scale Auto Enthsiast around 1988. It's a "what if" idea on the premise that Ford bought Ferrari when it was put up for sale in the 1960s, and Mercury built a car with lots of input from Ferrari engineers and stylists. That was in the first magazine I ever bought about model cars. I was fascinated that someone could build something so complex...and stylish. It was a huge influence on me. Mark also wrote the "Custom Clinic" articles for Car Modeler. He showed us how to chop, channel, section, use putty properly, paint with lacquers, hammer body panels from brass...I could go on... He ran a 2-year long how-to on a custom he called "The Modern Dream Truck". It was heavily influenced by Spencer Murray's original Dream Truck, but with Mark's ideas on what it would look like if built today (well, 1995 anyway). When it was finished, he critiqued his own work. He didn't "give himself a trophy". he was very harsh on his own work. He was not at all pleased with it so he took it apart to do all over again! He ran the annual Custom Car Photo Contest for Car Modeler. He would show all the models that placed, along with constructive criticism. IMHO, he knows a heck of a lot about what is stylish and what is not. He has a website about custom car models and full-size customs. He has run the Great Salt Lakes Model Car Contest since its inception sometime in the early 1980s. I've never been able to attend, but magazine coverage of the big winners has inspired many of us to improve our work. I'm a pretty big fan of Mark. I even followed along his Modern Dream Truck series with my own version. I started mine about the time the series wrapped up, so I had the benefit of having the whole series when I started. Mine was not intended to be an exact clone. he was very harsh in criticising his model. I agreed with some, but not all, of his criticism. You can see my version on his website. I couldn't get good photos on my own so I sent him my model, which he photographed along his own. I only wish Mark had more time to stop by and chat with us.

  18. This is a project I'm working on for someone else. A light sanding and I'll be ready to send it off. I was asked to build the body only, but I made frame rails also. I felt like it would help keep both sides symmetrical, especially at the rear where the frame kicks up. It's wood, which I've never worked in. It has been a real challenge Here's a photo of the real car. I built the model off old line drawings and b/w photos. This photo shows me that I need to recontour the top of the hood. The model's hood is too flat. It also looks like the frame rails need some tweaking at the front. I should be able to fix it over the weekend. I'd like to say Hello to the guy stalking me across the internet. How ya doin'?
  19. I don't know what you've got, but I have the same thing. I decided to quit detailing/converting/customizing and start finishing. That lasted 3 models. I'm back to my old ways of chopping up perfectly good kits. I just ordered a Heller Citroen 15CV because the rear of the body resembles a Delage town car. Heller's Delahaye can give up its front fenders to use as rears. I'm not sure where I'll get front fenders.

  21. I figured the unbuilt kit on ebay would be too expensive. I logged in to ebay and saw it only had a few minutes left, so I watched it. The price was still low, so I sniped it for 37 bucks. Not too bad, IMHO. I also got the "junkyard" car. Cool! BTW can anyone identify the manufacturer of the 935?
