Dale, Sr. was, is, and always will be THE MAN! I don't cae what his detractors said about him, he never raced anyone any harder than he expected to be raced himself. He never cried when he crashed, unlike some current drivers. I don't like to name names, but the worst offenders surprisingly have the same initials as Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Denny Hamlin! -

Rob, I really like where you're going with your "Flatbed Ford"! One of the best things about it from where I sit is that it's nothing like I envisioned it. To me, it was always a mid-60's F-200 with faded white over red two-tone paint, a wooden push bumper, clearance lights on the roof, and a dog sticking it's head out the window. About the only things the two had in common were the dual rear wheels, the trailer hitch, and the business advertisement on the doors. It's models like yours that I had in miond when I came up with the idea for this CBP. -

Well Earl, you're a lot further along than I am (actually, it seems like EVERYBODY is!), but that's only because I'm involved in about 4 other CBP's at the moment. Two of those are nearly done - in paint and being chrome foiled, interiors finished. -

Well Charlie, you said you wanted to see a first-year Corvair in this, so here's my progress on mine so far, along with a couple of shots of what I had to work with. It turns out that I'm having to "Borrow" a few bits and pieces from a used-up promo that I had lying around with a broken body to make this thing happen. Later on, when I'm equipped to do some resin casting, I'll make some replacements. From what I've heard around the hobby, there's a ready market for Corvair odds and ends. This model is a replica of a car I once owned, and later on became my older daughter's first car. She was the only person in her high school class to have a car 20 years older than she was! I made her a replica of the car about 10 years ago, so I thought it was time I had one of my own. I tried something different on this one that worked out pretty well, for the most part: I cut the sides off the interior bucket with a razor saw to make it easier to paint the 4-color door panels. I've been making good progress on the 1966 Corvair Yenko Stinger so far. I've decided to knock that one out first before concentrating on the "Gasser", but the Gasser's engine is coming along pretty well at the moment too. Here are some happy snaps of where the Stinger stands at the moment and what it looked like when I first tore it down. I started with an eBay "Glue Bomb" 1966 AMT Corvair Corsa coupe annual so it would have the "1966" license plates. I used the interior bucket from a later reissue instead of the one from the annual so I can use it in another model at a later date. After all, I'm depicting a gutted interior, so there's no need for the 1966-specific upholstery pattern on the door panels. I eliminated all trim from the body with the exception of the door handles and window mouldings. I also filled the concavity in the front panel that all AMT 1965-69 Corvair bodies have - it's not supposed to be like that! I modified the body so that it now has the mounting points for the bumper brackets, since the finished model won't have bumpers. Yet to come are homemade air doors for the engine lid that fit the openings better and are a more appropriate thickness. The engine is modified to run a vertical fan instead of the usual horizontal unit - a common modification in competition Corvairs, since that prevents them from throwing belts at high revs.

Not yet... You want it, you got it! Just out of curiousity (since I'm not familiar with the song), how much does it describe the car? "Antique Cadillac" leaves it pretty wide open. Anything from a Jo-Han mid-60's Coupe DeVille all the way back to one of their 1930's V-12s could fit that description. ... And you're VERY right about the Blown Hemi! -

I was hoping to get a big rig or two into this thing! I even suggested it in my lead-in, with a couple of references to "Convoy". (OK, so that one's a little corny. On the other hand, I might just paint the Monogram VW Microbus I have waiting to be built chartreuse, slap some "Flower Power" stickers on it, and enter it after granny's Dodge is finished... After all, I am a "Friend of Jesus"!) -
Janne - I have a kinda interesting model in the works that sort of fits, since the base vehicle for the actual vehicles that were produced in limited numbers started life as used Cadillac ambulances and hearses. A friend of mine once owned a camper based on a 1961 Caddy ambulance, and I'm partway through my own take on it, using the Jo-Han '66 Cadillac Ambulance kit as a base. If you tink it's close enough to your idea for this CBP, count me in. (I already have 4 CBP models inthe works, inc luding one for my own CBP: "The Cars of Rock 'n' Roll & Country Music". Why not think about joining in mine if you're interested and have the time??? )

It doesn't have to be the truck from the VIDEO, just the truck from the SONG. The song you picked was vague enough that you don't have to build your model based directly on a Toyota body. I think you nailed the style of truck the song had in mind (that's why they used it in the video, after all), but I don't see why you can't base your build on some other body. I like the idea of a big engine/big lift/big tires under a compact pickup, but why not think about an AMT Chevy S10 instead of the Toyota? They're easy to find - I have a couple of them in my workroom and I'm not even that much into pickups! -

Guys, I'm seeing some great progress on these models so far! That Monte looks like it's gonna be a real mess, Eelco, but then, that's the whole idea of a "Rusty Chevrolet", right? Sam, your Mustang convertible's stance is fantastic! Earl, your Mustang coupe is super so far - Sally will be thrilled with it! And I'm not forgetting about Bob's Caddy and Nico's Merc that haver been up here for a couple of weeks already. Great stuff all around, guys! Now I have to finish up my three other CBP entries (a 1960 Corvair 700 sedan "Glue Bomb" restoration for the Early Compact CBP and both a '66 Yenko Stinger and a Corvair Gasser for theVintage Competition CBP) and get crackin' on my "Brand New, Shiny, Red, Super Stock Dodge" - There's a little old lady out there in Pasadena who's getting impatient! I have a set of 1964 California plates all set to go on the Lindberg Dodge 330 I have for the project, but I'm thinking of getting a set of "GRANNY" Vanity Plates made up for it! -

The way I set out the rules, you had to give others at least 2 weeks to jump on a song before you entered a second build. I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure just offhand that it's been at lewast 2 weeks. Consider yourself down for the XK-E (actually, Jaguar called the car an "E-Type" - I'm a stickler for that sort of thing!) and the Stingray (with SIX taillights!) from Jan & Dean's "Dead Man's Curve". -

Nico - That Merc looks great so far! You say the top-chop is easy, so I'll be the first to admit your skills are light-years beyond mine. I've ruined more than my share of bodies with unsuccesful top chops and top transplants! I saw an episode of "Monster Garage" several years ago where Jese James got together a "Dream Team" of big name Old-School customizers, all of whom were at least in their 70's by that time, and they did a complete chop/channel/section/shave job on an early 50's Chevy 2-door sedan in just one week! I picked up a lot of pointers as to how it's supposed to be done from that show but I haven't tried to do it again since then. I'd like to atempt to chop the top on a late-model Corvair coupe to replicate a car that ran the California Mille a few years ago. That won't be easy with those skinny pillars... -

And a side note to hvymtl: Michael: Whatever you do, if you should come across an old '69 Impala and decide that's what you want to base your build on... DON'T!!! Let me know you have it and I'll go out and buy that C.O.P.O. Nova kit and swap you for the Impala! I ruined one of them back in the 70's and I've been looking for one I could aford ever since. A restorable "Glue Bomb" is acceptable... -

That would be real cool! I never thought of the "Magic Bus" like that. I always thought of it as a typical red London double-decker bus but, to a rocker from the psycodelic era in a drug-induced haze, the AMTronic could well be the sort of thing The Who had in mind. I've seen the AMTronic kit many times but I've 1) never seen one built and, 2) never had the ambition to build it myself. -

Hey, I didn't know that about David Clayton Thomas singing lead for Ides of March! I try to learn something new every day, no matter how trivial... It took me until 12:25 AM today, but I made it before I went to bed so I guess it counts! Bob, you're down for your Pink Cadillac. I'm not familiar with that one; Is it the same one as Aretha Franklin's "Freeway Of Love"? That's one of my favorite Motown tunes, and a great driving song! -

You're down for the '65 Mustang and if nobody else puts in for the other two, I'll add them at two week intervals as stated in the build rules. I want to give everyone a chance to build their favorites for this since I've limited it to only one of each vehicle for variety's sake. Hopefully you'll be able to get those entries in too - I'd like to see that 6-taillight Stingray at the light when the XKE pulls up! -
You listen to the music and you hear all the references to cars. Now's your opportunity to build your favorite car from the world of music. Is it a "Hot Rod Lincoln" (Commander Cody)? A "Little Red Corvette" (Prince)? Maybe a "Pink Cadillac" (Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Cole, or Aretha Franklin)? You could have "Fun, Fun, Fun" 'til you're done buildin' your T-bird (The Beach Boys)! Maybe "Trade in your Chevy for a Cadillac-ac-ac-ac-ac-ac"... (Billy Joel) Having trouble figuring out what to do with that Little Nash Rambler kit gathering dust on the shelf? A "Chevy Van" would be all right by me. You build Big Rigs? Great! How about a "Cabover Pete with a Reefer On" or a "Jimmy Haulin' Hogs" (C.W.McCall)? It doesn't matter whether it appears in the title or it's just mentioned in the song (And by "mentioned in the song", I don't mean just shown in the video with no actual mention! This is about the music, not the videos. I don't watch MTV, VH1, or Country Music Television!). If the "Vehicle" (Ides Of March) is recorded for posterity, it qualifies. (But to be fair, it should be a song that most of us are familiar with) HERE'S THE CATCH: There will be only ONE of each car or truck eligible for this Community Build. So if you want to build a Little Deuce Coupe" (Not that that one hasn't been done to death already!), you should probably get your name on it early! If the song isn't absolutely specific about the car/truck in question, feel free to go your own way within the spirit and era of the song. (For instance, a "Hot Rod Lincoln" would be any 50's-era Lincoln engine in any Model A body, and Ides Of March's "Vehicle" could be just about any black sedan through the mid-70's) If you want to submit more than one, that's okay but please give others an opportunity to get their picks in before naming your second build - maybe two weeks between submissions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A CHANGE FROM WHEN I FIRST POSTED THIS CBP: THE ORIGINAL DEADLINE OF DECEMBER 31, 2011 HAS BEEN LIFTED! As with other Community Build Projects, I'd like to see "In Progress" pictures. I find that they're one of the best things about these things, having the opportunity to get into other builder's minds (and workshops!) to see how they get the results they had in mind at the outset of the build. I'm relatively new to the website, but I'm finding these Community Builds to be just the thing to get my creative juices flowing. I'm in - once I compllete the two I'm building for the Demolition Derby Community Build (Can I cross-Enter them, since a Demolitiln Derby is, after all, automotive competition and both models are based on cars produced well before 1990: 1965 and '66... ) and the Early Compact Community Build. Put me down for a 1966 Corvair Yenko Stinger AND a Corvair Gasser!
