Pro Stock style racing actually began in 1968 as a "showcase" class for the AHRA. In 1969 the AHRA class was given official status and called Super Stock. As Marc stated, Pro Stock was an official NHRA eliminator category beginning in 1970. To answer your tire question; There might be no difference in tire size between the early Pro Stock cars and the top Super Stock classes (SS/B or SS/BA). Super Stockers were allowed to use any size tire that would fit in the stock wheel house while Pro Stocks were allowed to have as much as 2 inches of the tire to be outside of the wheel opening. After looking at dozens of 1970 Pro Stock photos, it looks as though the tires of the day were no more than 10 or 11 inches wide. Walter Frey

Just completed. It was fun to research this one. A little bit of scratch building, some kit bashing, and some aftermarket parts helped bring this one to fruition. The 18" front wheels really make this one look "right", along with the "pie crust" slicks, and the scratch built roll bar. The driver's harness was scavenged from a Target 1320 dragster. Engine is a Revell Parts Pack, 427 Ford. I'm not real happy with the paint. The primer reacted with the plastic, causing the color coat to look a little "textured". I'll probably re-do it. What you have there is an Altered class car. Like Maliburacer suggested, go with a solid mounted Olds rear. The diff. and chassis from the Bantam Blast would be a good starting point for a car like this. A quick change could also be used as they are somewhat common in kit form. Walter Frey

Here is one that has not been posted here. It is a Jaw breaker kit without the nose piece and it has a early hemi instead of the kit supplied 426. Walter Frey

If early to mid sixties is what you are trying to replicate, go with a Chrys. 8 3/4 or one of those Olds style diffs. from the Revell, Anglia. The quick change from the Revell, Austin Gasser would also be fine. The way that you describe the chassis indicates that this car may be more dragster than roadster. If so, don't use any rear suspension or traction devices. The diff. housing would have been most likely been bolted directly to the frame rails. If you could post a pic of a similar car, I might be of more help. WF

I picked up a couple of the 1320 dragsters at a New Jersey Target store on Saturday. I will most likely cannibalize them. They are not as nice as the built-ups from 1320. The Garlits decals were horrible compared to the original, the magneto, wiring, and breathers are really goofy as well. However..... they are definitely worth $19.99 just for the wheels, tires and other parts. WF

I made the "Honest Injun" and the red Pontiac head decals using my lap top and printed them on decal paper. WF

Pretty much box stock with a few exceptions. I used a Revell Parts Pack Pontiac engine with scratch built headers. Engine also has fuel system and plug wires. Its a little too high for my taste now that I look at it. Next one will be a whole lot lower! WF
