This might be the 2nd time I ever "played" here, but I'll go with real. For some of the reasons stated above, and there's something about the floor itself. Looks like painted concrete or something...Dan

KW tow truck WIP
Southgate replied to crashalot2's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I just saw your Pete, and now this! Another beauty! I like the fleet theme idea, and your choice of colors. I have a fleet of 3 complete, 3 more nearing and they all match, (or will) in red. Your outdoor shots really set these pictures off! Dan -
Peterbilt tow truck Holmes 750
Southgate replied to crashalot2's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great work on a clean model. I'll assume that the holmes is scratchbuilt? It can easily pass as a real rig. Very nice! Dan -

It looks like you're off to a good start towards your goal. The toned down rigs seem to be under represented it seems. Dan -
Ford F-600 Medium Duty Truck

Yes, Far too few! Nice job on a good ol' work-a-day truck. Dan -
Nope. I'd advise that it would be far harder to make the hood fit than it's worth. Note that the AMT (red) has a hood that slopes where it meets the cab. You can see the slope on the cab here. The Revell's is basically flat. Making this Monogram (currently Revell) snap kit into a daycab was really as simple as cutting the sleeper off with a razor saw, filing the remaining joint flush, and making a rear panel with a backlight (window) hole in it. If you cut the panel just slightly over size, you can use a large fine file to fit it in perfectly, no filler putty, etc. If you are going to sweat the rivet detail, you could cut the rear panel from the AMT cab and use it. But why bother?NOBODY has noticed that this cab lacks the rivets. I added a piece diamond plate over the resulting flat spot where the sleeper was, but that could be eliminated too with a little more work. Dan

Part Two - Finished!

What a super nice looking setup. Clean and tight. What yellow paint did you use on this? And did you use primer, etc? Looks great! Dan -
peterbilt 379-done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Southgate replied to mse op's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Good looking truck all around! What's the difference between a 359 and a 379? Dan -
Albert, If the engine has a turbocharger, it is an NTC-350. if not turbocharged, it's probably an NHC-250. Either will be Cummins Biege color. Here's a good place to look at them. There is an NHC also, if you type in NHC-250, it is painted in military green. http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&a...G=Search+Images I agree, I like the fact that this forum is big rig related, no "dubbed" Escalades... For what it's worth, I once posted a detailed "how-to" article on another site showing how to make an AMT or Ertl Paystar/Transtar type Hendrickson suspension work, with all the walker beams and traction bars. I could bring it over here if anyone's interested. Dan

Cheesehead Plow
Southgate replied to mackinac359's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I just found this kind of by accident, but it's an impressive model of an impressive rig! As much as I don't like winter, I do enjoy watching the ODOT plows throwing snow way off the highways. Your truck definately captures the look of a well maintained but ready for hard work rig. Dan -

It looks like this resto project is in good hands. Dan -
Hey, that's handy stuff to know! I have a spare one of these setups, and this info can make it all the more versatile. Dan

Aaron, the Ford Aeromax kit actually has a Freightliner rear tandem setup. Italeri or Revell, whoever first tooled the kit took a shortcut here and used tooling from existing FL kits. It is however a great looking, well detailed suspension. Ford used Hendrikson suspensions much like the one in the GMC astro kit. For what it's worth, in the 1/1 world a truck shop could swap out just about any suspension for another, for whatever reasons they might have. I once saw and took pictures of an old Autocar with a Mack rear setup, right down to the Mack logos in the castings. Dan

kenworth heavy hauler-excavator done
Southgate replied to mse op's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very nice! Not to be a dolt, but where did you get the excavator? Dan -
Yes, just as Ray sez above, but don't forget to hit "enter" a time or two between each picture posted, so they will be stacked properly. Dan

Thanks again for the comments. Aaron, the orange look comes from the photography. The model is actually very red. Does this look redder? (is that a word?) Dan
