240 MPG Volkswagen!
Harry P. replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think your on-board computer is lying to you. If a '95 Caddy made 30-35 mpg it would have been headline news. A brand-new Caddy, with 15 years of engineering advancements on your '95 can't even make that kind of mileage. How do you figure that they could make a Caddy get 30 mpg in 1995, but they can't do it now? -
That's exactly right. The interior on the new car was not compromised because new cars are designed to crumple around the passenger compartment. They are designed to fold up like an accordion and absorb the impact of a collision, so that the passenger compartment remains relatively undamaged. New cars are light years ahead of old cars as far as passenger safety is concerned. Styling, however? I gotta go with old school. Those 50s cars had it all over the new bland genericars. Give me fins and chrome any day!

Oh, I forgot to mention... My Mustang GT gets 120 mpg highway... -

You guys really like to exaggerate, don't you? According to fueleconomy.gov, a 2010 Insight gets 40 mpg city, 43 mpg highway. If yours is older than 2010 it probably gets even less... -

There's no way a 1995 Cadillac gets anywhere near 30-37 mpg highway. EPA numbers (revised downward to more realistically reflect real-world driving conditions): 1995 Cadillac DeVille 8 cyl, 4.6 L, Automatic 4-spd, City:15 Highway:23 1995 Cadillac DeVille 8 cyl, 4.9 L, Automatic 4-spd, City:14 Highway:24 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood 8 cyl, 5.7 L, Automatic 4-spd, City:15 Highway:23 -
It's gonna be awfully hard to slow that thing down, seeing as it doesn't have any brakes!

I'm very surprised at this. If you look at the last angle they show (the overhead view), you'll see that the amount of damage is roughly equal on both cars. The '59's windshield came out, but apart from that, the amount of compression to the bodies looks roughly the same to me... which basically disproves that old misconception that old cars were "safer" because they were made of thicker metal, they were sturdier, etc. Apparently not true, as the old car got just as smashed as the new one. The real difference is seatbelts and airbags.

It was recently discovered that the Edsel was actually considered much earlier than previously thought... Then there's the Korean version of the Edsle, the rare "Kedsel"...

That sounds kinda weird... But how about a "de-stacked" headlight GTO?

Final vote: 13 Real, 46 Model. Pretty lopsided vote, I thought it would be closer... but you guys got it, it's a 1/18 MODEL. Next ROM coming Monday!

I never heard of or saw the "Stallions"... my Mustang station wagon was just made up out of my head, I did it about 2 years ago. I guess I wasn't the only one to come up with that idea?

The cheapest compressor is going to be cheap for a reason-it's junk! Buying a cheap compressor is false economy... yeah, you'll save a few bucks up front, but a few months later when that piece of junk breaks down you'll wish you would have bought a better one. Do yourself a favor... save your money until you have enough to buy a quality compressor. It'll cost you more up front, but it'll last much longer and probably actually save you money in the long run. There are a lot of good compressors suitable for powering an airbrush for around $100. Harbor Freight has a bunch of them for even less than $100.

$650!!!

Can there be any more useless scale for this engine? Too big to fit in a model, too small to display alone.

Actually he turned 50 last February, he'll be 51 soon (born Feb. 1959). -
You sure do like that kit, don't you? That and the Willys coupe! Fantastic job, as usual. You are without a doubt the King of Korrosion...

George, I wasn't talking about killing ROM.... I meant ROM one week, What Is It the next week. Alternate between the 2. Or maybe 3 weeks of ROM, then one week of What Is It. This used to run on the SA forum a long time ago, it was called Auto ID Quiz. When SA decided that their forum could have NO mention of 1:1 cars anymore, they deleted the 1:1 section and Auto ID Quiz died. I always liked it, and thought maybe I'd bring it over here and see what you guys think. The problem is, how would it work? As soon as one of you gets the answer, the game is over. Maybe someone posts the answer about 5 minutes after I post the photo, so it would be a pretty short game! The way it was run at SA, you would email your guess, and at the end of the week they would post the list of all the people who got it right. We could do it that way, even keep score week to week to see who knows their cars!

Just one question. When both your hands are in the shot... who's taking the picture???

Guess What this is?

I don't know what it is, but I'd be willing to bet that the paint job is not original. I don't think they even had invented that shade of purple back then! -
Good point. I don't want to be responsible for George's breakdown...
-
I'm thinking of maybe alternating ROM with "What Is It"... what do you guys think? ROM one week, "What Is It" the next? Or keep on doing ROM every week? It's not a poll, but I'll take all suggestions under consideration!

I was just thinking "what would this car look like without the bugeyes?" Hidden headlights like the Charger... AMC styling always was quirky... I actually kinda like the Matador, but I wanted to see what it would look like if it had been a "mainstream" make.

The headlights popped up.
