Rommel's Rod sells for $ 1 million +
Harry P. replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I believe that's called "free speech," and is a right guaranteed in the Constitution. The fact that one person may say something that's offensive to another person is an unfortunate but unavoidable result of free speech. It happens every day, in thousands, if not millions, of instances. The only way to guarantee that someone won't be offended by something someone else says or does is to somehow determine everything that is offensive to anyone, and somehow remove those words or phrases from the language... and force everyone to forget those particular words or phrases forever. And if that were even possible, our concept of "free speech" or freedom of expression is gone. And besides that, it wouldn't be long before new "offensive" words would pop up, because that's human nature. You'll never be able to change human nature by trying to legislate it. -
Same here. My parents wouldn't buy me a Krate. Not even a plain old Stingray. I had a "regular" bike.

For the record... I agree 100%. I could write a book on the subject! But no politics here, please.

I was talking about city ordinances vs. state law. The state of California fining you if you water your lawn, while the city you live in fines you for not watering it. Two sets of laws in direct contradiction to each other. What's a homeowner supposed to do?

One man's "heightened awareness of being nice to more people" is another man's "PC Police." Same concept. Different way of describing it. -
Don't know what HOA is. I'm talking about city ordinances.

And until Harry Reid puts his Redskins season tickets up on ebay and donates the proceeds to Native American causes, he's nothing but a hypocrite. -

Everyone comes from someplace else. The "Indians" migrated to North America from Asia, over to what is now Alaska, and down across North America, a long time ago when there was still a land bridge between Siberia and North America. So the "Native" Americans aren't all that native to America at all. We need to put less emphasis on terms and labels and who is what, and put more effort into treating each other equally. I like jb's last sentence above. -
Wow. Both of those are absolutely beautiful! How I would love to have the real one in my driveway!

Won't that offend the potato population? Oh well... they can just cover their eyes... -

Maybe the name "Redskins" does need to go. How about a name that has more of a connection to D.C.? How about the Washington Weasels? -
The diecast might be a good starting point. Take it apart, detail it, replace parts that you think need replacing, etc. I've done that to diecast models before... the results can be amazing. Just an idea...

Not as long as idealogues keep creating PC "issues" that must be resolved to meet their demands. I don't remember there ever being any outcry over the Washington Redskins name before this current one. Nobody has ever pressured the team owners to change the name until now. Where was all the "outrage" and "offense" before? I agree with you that times change and what was once acceptable may not be anymore. But my point is, look who's pushing this issue. American Indians? No. Harry Reid is, and similar members of the PC Police. That's why I asked how much of this has to do with real people actually being offended, and how much does it have to do with pushing a particular socio-political agenda by people who themselves have no reason to be offended, but who want everyone to see things their way. -
Does it have to be the kit? Or will a diecast model do? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=1924+hispano-suiza&adpos=1s1&crlp=18587300299_2416792&MT_ID=71&device=c&_osacat=0&keyword=1924+hispano-suiza&geo_id=10232&clk_rvr_id=668467592447&crdt=0&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X1924+hispano-suiza+modelisimo+leonardo&_nkw=1924+hispano-suiza+modelisimo+leonardo&_sacat=0&_from=R40

This didn't irk me today, but I bet it's irking a lot of people in California... I read a story where the California state government has issued restrictions on water usage due to drought conditions. You're supposed to let your lawn go brown, because according to the state, "brown is the new green." However... certain local governments in the state will fine homeowners who don't keep their lawns looking "green and healthy," because they believe brown lawns mean neglect, and lower property values. So apparently you will be fined by the state government if you water your lawn, and you will be fined by your local government if you don't. Government gone nuts. No wonder so many people are leaving the state.

Don't think so. They may be in their free market infancy, but they're as industrialized as anyone. -

Bill, you're not fat. You're "husky." -
It's completely understandable that someone not familiar with building models wouldn't realize the time and effort that goes into it. Just like any of us who are unfamiliar with what someone else does, either as a job or as a hobby. I'm sure most people would look at a piece of furniture that a woodworker designed and built in his shop and have no clue as to how much time, effort, skill, and money were invested in that piece of furniture. If they've never built a piece of furniture, how could they know? All you have to do is tell your buddy that you're flattered, but you can't possibly take the time to build ten of them... let alone for free, given that it takes X amount of $$$ and X amount of hours of work per kit. I'm sure that once you point out what it takes to build a model, both time and $$$ wise, he'd understand.

What I question is this: the Washington Redskins have been the Washington Redskins for nearly a hundred years. If anyone was offended by that, they've had plenty of time to speak up. Yet, the name didn't become an issue until certain people decided to make it an issue, like Harry Reid, for one. I have heard that the vast majority of actual Indians (or "native Americans" or whatever the "correct" term is today) are not offended by the Redskins, or the Cleveland Indians, or the Atlanta Braves, or the Chicago Blackhawks, or the Kansas City Chiefs, or the Florida Seminoles, etc. I can see that the term "redskin" can be taken as a slur, especially by those who are easily "outraged," as seems to be the case with many people these days. But when the likes of a Harry Reid are the ones who are "offended" and pushing this issue, I have to think there is more political correctness driving this than actual offense taken by anyone. Once the PC Patrol sinks their teeth into an issue, they don't let go. Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. -
