  1. This is the "Donk for a day" look for my newly restored Caprice I took an extra Caprice Chassis (with catalytic converter, oh my ) and fit the front suspension, wheels, tires from the Revell Escalade kit. It even sits "properly" for a Donk, nose-in-the-air for the "superior" look of a real mid-'70's Impala or Caprice-based Donk. After the show, the stock chassis/wheels/tires go back under it. I also fixed a few things; added interior mirror, chrome A pillar and front wheel opening moldings. In case you haven't seen the stock version: Stock Version
  2. Thanks Ron, I had managed to miss that detail in the few reference photos I have! I'll take care of it tomorrow when I attempt to figure out a reasonable one-day-solution to the Donk category at B'ham. If I had a second '74 I'd definitely build the car your Mom had! That's a great looking Impala. Can't wait to see your take on it!
  3. This one's about done...it might look a bit different at Birmingham on Saturday, aka "Donk for a day", but otherwise the stock variation is finished. This thing is like a '70's flaming disco ball Barcalounger Fun restoration, paint is Testors mixed to match Lime Yellow w/a medium green top/interior. Bumpers stripped and redone w/Spaz Stix chrome, looks pretty good. BMF is a PITA, even my new sheet has a bunch of cracks, but not as bad as my old sheet. Side mirror from parts box, MCCM plate from an old show. I may still do some headlight paint detail. In progress thread: Progress thread Finished pics:
  4. Personally I've had resin that Westley's didn't remove all the mold release. Easy Off heavy-duty oven cleaner works wonders. It's nasty stuff, but it will make your models squeaky clean and able to be painted properly.
  5. Good luck with the surgery. Hope the following story helps. My 84 year old Mom had lung cancer diagnosed in October '06. A small stage 1 tumor in her upper right lobe, hadn't spread anywhere and apparently had been there for awhile; she had been a smoker up until age 74. It was operated on Dec. 1 '06, the surgery itself was successful and done arthroscopically through a trio of small incisions w/o opening the chest, she had a terrible 3 weeks of recovery from a host of ancillary things before leaving the hospital and a couple months in a nursing home for physical therapy to get her strength back, but she's recovered quite nicely now, no residual lung disease, no chemo/radiation necessary, and she's been passing her checkups since then with flying colors. And still loves driving her BMW Z3 convertible
  6. Cadzilla was designed for ZZTop by Larry Erickson, who was a designer for Cadillac at the time and freelanced the design of Cadzilla, and most recently he is known for designing the production '05 Mustang for Ford. Coddington built Cadzilla to Larry's design.
  7. Before paying for Fotki make absolutely sure that they aren't blocked on the Gov't computers. Many businesses block employee access to Fotki, so you need to make sure it works for you with your situation.
  8. He showed a finished/restored Ferrari model the other day. Mark's Ferrari
  9. It's the same car that's on your flyer, it had to be done. Not sure about exactly how it'll be shown on Saturday, I may end up doing 2 chassis. It will be on the theme table
  10. Thanks! That's a killer Cayman racer; I'd heard about it but hadn't seen pics. It begs to be built in scale.
  11. I've gotten some good progress so far. Body was primed/filled/block sanded, there were some sink marks and mold lines that needed attention and the fit of the hood wasn't great. It's now wearing it's first coats of "mixed by eye" lime yellow paint (enamel), the interior is pretty much finished in a medium green, the vinyl top will be the same color as the interior. The flocking looks better in the bucket than in the photo for some reason, though I did have to mix the color. Whitewalls were done w/a fine tip gel pen and a circle template.
  12. I've polished out a couple Fujimi kits that were molded in white, they look decent. I can't say whether the plastic is UV stable enough not to ever yellow, and it's impossible to determine on fresh plastic. Depends on how "important" your build is; is it just a fun kit to build quickly, or are you interested in the best appearance? Tamiya Pure White sprayed over unprimed plastic gives a fantastic finish w/a minimum of effort. There's no guarantee that a clearcoat will not turn yellow, or prevent plastic from yellowing.
  13. Those are really cool; I've thought about getting the Animal House resin for myself. This is the first time I've seen the Nemo car finished.
  14. Thanks! It's pretty decent; no major issues. You have to cut off f/r bumpers and add the resin ones, I smoothed them in and then rescribed the panel lines. I had to tweak the front corner lamps to fit, taillight lenses needed a bit of trimming, wheels needed to be modified (actually the brake backing where it meets the suspension) because the ride height was too high. It's a nice kit, P/E includes racing harness detail, brake discs, the wheels are two-piece machined rims w/plastic centers. Got it from Strada Sports. I like it well enough to do another as a race car, and Scale Productions wants these photos for it's web page, so I guess it gets the stamp of approval
  15. Nice work! And I have a derelict '69 T-Bird...hmmmm...I like this roof more than the fastback.
  16. This is the Fujimi Cayman w/the Scale Productions transkit for the Cayman GT. Color scheme was inspired by the '08 Porsche GT3 RS. Originally intended to be a race car for an ACME Cayman GT group build (everyone picks a Porsche livery and makes it a "fantasy racer"), I felt it looked too good as a street car so I'm looking for a vintage livery for my next Cayman GT. Paint is Tamiya gloss aluminum, orange was custom mixed to match my custom decals, roll bar modified from a Revell Subaru WRX. This is an entirely different looking beast than my recent "heritage" Cayman, and I like 'em both.
  17. Probably, but I'd check to make sure. They do not list an uptop for the convertible, but the "roof section for Corvette convertible", which I assume is the hardtop. Call them or email them to make sure.
  18. Yes, the Prestige series '63 has a hardtop option.
  19. Yes. New in-house effort.
  20. I sent Kevin aka Strada Sports the link yesterday to the Bad Boys '08 car w/the new for '08 graphics scheme...which isn't half as cool as the '07 scheme, but hey...modelers want everything! I would assume he'll have '08 graphics sometime in the not terribly distant future...especially after he sees them in person at Sebring in about three weeks. "Blackout headlights. Black BBS wheels. The famous BlackTail reborn. The new Scrape Stripe. Velocity Yellow meets BadBoy Black.......to give the 2008 C6R's a look no one will miss. From the stands OR in rearview mirrors [imagine those glaring 'black eyes' looming behind YOU], these Corvettes will rock it. Introducing the 2008 Corvette Racing livery. .....with black rockers and the BBV url on the front corner! Sebring, LeMans and beyond - the season awaits." Badboyvettes.com website
  21. While it's not currently in the lineup, because the price of zinc for diecast quadrupled, you may eventually see it reissued as a full plastic kit like many of their other previous diecast models are being converted. Give it time. It's a fine kit, aside from the lack of "Trans Am" lettering and tire sidewalls that are completely devoid of any detail. I know they won't use "Good Year" anymore, but c'mon...they can fake some simple design on the sidewalls to make them at least look like MODEL tires, not TOY tires
  22. Use a lacquer paint like Testors/Tamiya/automotive (airbrushed even better w/thinner coats), use a dehydrator, use Tamiya coarse/fine/finish polish, and it certainly can be done in that timeframe, and with very high-quality results. While the paint is drying, work on interior/chassis. Also use dehydrator for drying all parts. I've gotten some really nice results on a few curbsides in well under 10 hours total. If you look up my Porsche Cayman that I finished a week or so ago, it took me about 11 hours start to finish (total, not over one day), and the Boxster shown in the same thread (and in an earlier thread last year) was done in 8 hours, it was an even simpler kit. As for "marathon builds", I have done a few, and honestly they're not any less detailed than my normal stuff. I pick subjects that I know can be done in that timeframe. This was painted/polished/assembled in 15 hours during the 24 hours of LeMans this past year, was done by 1 AM after starting at 9:30 AM (3.5 previous hours before the marathon build spent on cleanup/primer): Tamiya sprays (color, dry, wetsand, reshoot color, clearcoat, dry, wetsand/polish by 6 PM), all lacquer or water-based acrylic for details. Curbside resin kit. No foiling required, but the small p/e parts and decals were driving me nuts during final assembly.
  23. I thought it looked familiar And to think since this won GSL, Russ has gone AWOL from the hobby. He did some great work!
  24. This bike is truly awesome! It's along the lines of how I want to build one...a real hotrod, not a chrome-laden piece of driveway jewelry. Nice work
  25. Thanks for all the comments! I know it would be strange in 1:1 scale, but that's exactly why building models is fun..you can build something you'll never likely see in 1:1 scale. I've got a lot of built Porsches, probaby around 20, and a good number unbuilt. I've got another Cayman nearing completion, but no photos yet. It's a silver Cayman GT with the Scale Productions transkit, custom designed & printed orange "GT" decals and orange wheels/wing ends/mirrors to look like a current GT3 RS that comes in that color combo as well. It's looking pretty good, and I'll have photos and maybe a completion in a week or so...hopefully done for the Birmingham NNL. It was going to be a street/track day car, but I like it too much to cover it w/racing decals. Looks like I'll be doing another with vintage GT1 Rohr markings, in bright yellow. Or maybe an IROC version...who knows.
