Hi guys! I decided to challenge myself to build a pickup truck from the ground up... I have no idea if Ill succeed, but I'll give it a try.

Before I go into detail of the build, a small sidestory which led up to this project:

My dad started building a Unimog firetruck 20+ years ago, and the cab and chassis of the kit was damaged when he got it, so obviously, he mailed the company and they sent him another cab and chassis. He kept the damaged parts and built the Uni with the new parts, I'll see if I can get some pics of it some day. A few years ago, i got my hands on these parts, and earlier this March, I decided to fix them up.

Here's the cab after some reinforcements and the broken parts fixed...

Since I now had a nice cab but no kit to use it with, I decided to build a car from the ground up, using the cab as a start.

Some mock ups in paper, along with the wheels and wheelbase I'm going to use.. The frame is the one from the Uni, and that is a bit too short and a bit out of shape since that was damaged as well, so I'll make a new one out of styrene.

The mockups where transfered into 0.5 mm styrene, shich I glued on to the Uni cab to have a pickup cab with a frontend.. Some of the styrene has been double layered so as to get 1.0 mm styrene sheets for a more rigid part, and there is some bracing on the inside so the sheets doesn't flex.

I'll start making the interior and floor, but I'll have to modify a few things on the cab, so the interior is not glued in permanently until it's painted...

And after that I'll start with the frame, which I'm thinking about making out a piece of cardboard which styrene sheets are glued around so it's sturdy and won't break.

Interesting start here. This will surely be different .. will be sitting here following along ...

I have no idea where it's going to be honest, so I'm more or less just following along too... I'm thinking about either making it something lowrider-ish, or something similar to the Engineered to Slide Hilux. Either way, it's going to be low, thats a promise!

Thanks Bob, yeah this is a nice project for me, the styrene sheets are pretty new for me to work with, so I'm exploring the possibilities a lot here, along with my engineering and building skills!

Thanks Richard!

You could perhaps scratch build them or try to hunt down another kit with similar wheels?

Thanks! I hope so, will be interesting to see how it turns out.
