raisin27 Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 The Flint Area Auto Modelers held their annual 1 day build this weekend. We all started with unopened Revell 55 Chevys and had about 8 hours to finish. I dont think there were any show winners in the bunch but sure was a lot of fun and a good way to spend a day with some friends. Heres a link to see the individual builds.......... http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v19/amaz...%20DAY%20BUILD/
Junkman Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 How can you paint and foil a car within 8 hours?
camaroman Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 All very nice but I really like the ivory/red and the green/white with the paint fading!!!! Nice work guys!!!
Simon Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 What a great idea! It's fascinating to see the different ideas and finished builds from the same kit. That primered tail-dragger is pretty special, but they are all impressive - some of my builds never reach that standard after 8 weeks I know what you lads mean, I'm sure I'd end up with thumb prints all over the body if I tried an 8 hour build.
Zoom Zoom Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 How can you paint and foil a car within 8 hours? Use a lacquer paint like Testors/Tamiya/automotive (airbrushed even better w/thinner coats), use a dehydrator, use Tamiya coarse/fine/finish polish, and it certainly can be done in that timeframe, and with very high-quality results. While the paint is drying, work on interior/chassis. Also use dehydrator for drying all parts. I've gotten some really nice results on a few curbsides in well under 10 hours total. If you look up my Porsche Cayman that I finished a week or so ago, it took me about 11 hours start to finish (total, not over one day), and the Boxster shown in the same thread (and in an earlier thread last year) was done in 8 hours, it was an even simpler kit. As for "marathon builds", I have done a few, and honestly they're not any less detailed than my normal stuff. I pick subjects that I know can be done in that timeframe. This was painted/polished/assembled in 15 hours during the 24 hours of LeMans this past year, was done by 1 AM after starting at 9:30 AM (3.5 previous hours before the marathon build spent on cleanup/primer): Tamiya sprays (color, dry, wetsand, reshoot color, clearcoat, dry, wetsand/polish by 6 PM), all lacquer or water-based acrylic for details. Curbside resin kit. No foiling required, but the small p/e parts and decals were driving me nuts during final assembly.
