I have been contemplating building a diorama of a garage/shop.My question is what does a 2x4 scale out to so I know what stock to buy? I also need to ask what is the best material to replicate concrete block?

what scale are you building?

if 1/25, you're fairly safe to double 1/48 sizes:

these folks have sheets of masonry siding:

lego will sell their blocks x the each and it's a very protoypical way to build:

you can also search dollhouse, military, & railroad modeling for their sources.

just divide the dimension by the scale .. so a 4" piece at 1/25 scale is 4 divided by 25 ... which is .16" It's all pretty simple .. even Windows has a calculator.
