landman Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) The new exhaust manifolds in primer: Stole the air compressor from a Peterbilt and added a large spoked pulley Found some carbs which might work, size-wise anyway. Now I have to find or make two 6 cylinder distributors. Edited October 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 (edited) I combined the V16 oil pan with one found in the junkpile to get something relatively close to to the 702's. Found a bell housing of the right size in the junkpile and attached that to the rear of the block. Edited October 25, 2020 by landman
landman Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 (edited) Started work on the distributors. Marked & drilled some round rod. Added wires and itty bitty little sleeves to make it look like it has boots. Gave the engine a shot of primer to get away from the multiple textures and colors. Edited October 25, 2020 by landman
Motor maker Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 (edited) 80% completed? It is looking good! I especially like the front of your motor and hate the fact it'll be in a COE. Actually is the front of your motor going to be concealed by the cab? Edited June 16, 2015 by Motor maker
landman Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Donovan, it will be in a GMC B-7000 which has a butterfly hood similar to the Ford N600.On the Ford, I made the hood panels removeable. I'm considering making the whole hood tilt, which would be incorrect of course but you could see the engine better. We'll see.
landman Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 The 702 runs two distributors on a common drive. The setup looks like this. I made the drive out of a stepped screw from an old typewriter, put a plastic sleeve on it as the body and the distributors will mount to that.
Superpeterbilt Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Outstanding work on those distributors. The motor is looking good in primer.
landman Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 (edited) Thanks Terry. Here they are with the harnesses trimmed and positioned. The white part on the distributors is way too long. I'm going to have to shorten that. Shaped some rod on the drill press to make coils. Started attaching the straps. Edited June 17, 2015 by landman
landman Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 The second picture should have been this one.
gatorincebu Posted June 18, 2015 Posted June 18, 2015 Wow! Talk about finite detail. This build is impressive. And your skills are aswell. Be Well Gator
landman Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Thanks guys. Using a method found on the forum here, I attempted to make flanges for the exhaust manifolds. The first ones were way too big so I did them again with smaller stock. I used my original "too big" fuel pump to make the oil filter bracket. Modified the bell housing to receive the starter' Started to modify the carbs to look more like those in the picture. Extended the air horns and added an oblong part to the side.
landman Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 Added the small line & vacuum dashpot. Added mounting posts to the coils & shortened the bodies so they look less like fire extinguishers. Threw a bit of paint on the engine.
dptydawg Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 An amazing piece of art! Your skills are those of a watch maker. I like the way you have broken this project down into a series of little projects that all tie together to create a masterpiece. Carl
landman Posted June 20, 2015 Author Posted June 20, 2015 Thanks Carl. that is exactly what I'm doing. I used the same approach when I rebuilt my '34 Chevy. Many sub assemblies to become a whole. I think it is the only way to combat ADD and not get overwhelmed. As far as masterpiece, well.... I think Donovan's will be more like it.
wayne swayze Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 I've been following along, and your work is very impressive.
Motor maker Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 (edited) Thanks Pat for the compliment but mine is slow going. Your motor is nothing to scoff at and has set a fairly high standard of detail to achieve. Edited June 21, 2015 by Motor maker
kilrathy10 Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Good Flippin' Gravy, Man.....Awesome work.....Just flat out awesome work....
landman Posted June 21, 2015 Author Posted June 21, 2015 Thanks Wayne, Donovan & JT. Can you tell I'm having fun?
landman Posted June 22, 2015 Author Posted June 22, 2015 Added carbs, ignition harnesses, distributors, air compressor & oil filter.
landman Posted June 23, 2015 Author Posted June 23, 2015 Added the starter and generator. And, following up on 426-HEMI's example I started making belts out of styrene strips.
gatorincebu Posted June 24, 2015 Posted June 24, 2015 If you are not having fun? You coulda fooled me.But then it is supposed to be fun!! Very impressive bit of work going here. Be Well Gator
landman Posted June 24, 2015 Author Posted June 24, 2015 Merci Marc. Added fuel lines and the oil line to the governors, Fan, coils, exhaust manifolds. So she's pretty well done. I need to do several touch-ups, paint the air filter elements and add the proper valve covers. I am satisfied with the outcome. It does look a bit like a 702.
