hotrodblder Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I'm looking for some help. I am working on a project that I would like to put air bags on and am not sure what to get as far as supplies and or how to put them together. If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Possibly O-rings. Maybe someone else could give some more difinitve tips.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I am assuming you are talking air bags for an air ride system? If so, I there are probably many different ways to handle this. One of the ways that I have been playing around with that looks pretty good is to use styrene tubing and "o" rings. Here are some pics of an older project, and the current project I am using this method on. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/uploads/med_gallery_8985_1213_27251.jpg http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/uploads/med_gallery_8985_800_170152.jpg
hotrodblder Posted June 17, 2015 Author Posted June 17, 2015 Mark, That is exactly what I was looking for. About what size oring do you use and do you use the same size on all four corners?
Russell C Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Rip apart a toasted non-working CD drive out of a computer, and you'll see the laser mechanism board thingy is supported with 4 squishy grommets. A bit big for 24th/25th scale cars, maybe. The ones shown here range from around 3/8" diameter to 1/2", but they do sorta resemble airbags....
Greg Myers Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Go to your nearest ACE Hardware and pull out their "o" ring drawer and take your pick.
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 (edited) Go to your nearest ACE Hardware and pull out their "o" ring drawer and take your pick. But please, don't scramble the O-rings for the next guy to have to sort through. Someone always does at my local Ace store, and I think it should be a hanging offence. gtx6970 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Harbor Freight has an assortment of O rings for cheap
Relic_Models Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 But please, don't scramble the O-rings for the next guy to have to sort through. Someone always does at my local Ace store, and I think it should be a hanging offence. Agreed. I had thought about using the material for the outside of a binder and some bent tubing to make some for semi trucks. I think that plastic/rubber material has enough flex in it to simulate sag or underinflation. The O-rings look like a pretty good option too.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 These measure right at 1/8inch ID and 1/4inch OD, but they came in a mm size, but I do not recall that size. The bag I bought had like 100 in it, so they will last ages. Cheap too, like $2-3 for the bag. I got mine online, but there are many options as some of the folks above have mentioned.
