They're present on this '61 Pontiac Tempest tub, too, though they have no corresponding pins on the inside of the body:

I believe if you look at the promo/friction versions (same tooling) you will find pins that fit into those tabs in an attempt to minimize warpage. The '61 AMT promos/frictions (with a few exceptions) still used acetate plastic
