Speedfreak Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I've got a grill that I'm gonna shoot Alclad chrome on and was wondering , (if there is one) , what kind of black wash should I use? Thanks.
Foxer Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 (edited) I think any wash of your choosing would work. I used Alclad on the grill of a GMC van I did and used my usual India ink 10% wash on it. That's usually stronger than the washes most use. I'm pretty happy with it. The center did need it to be all black. Edited August 20, 2015 by Foxer
Speedfreak Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 That grill looks good, as does the van, thanks for the input, I'll experiment.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 You'll want to be careful, whatever you figure out.Alclad paint is pretty fragile. It doesn't take much to rub it off right back down to the base coat. Steve
Speedfreak Posted August 21, 2015 Author Posted August 21, 2015 Thanks Steve, I've been wearing disposable plastic gloves when I handle it. I just don't want to screw it up using the wrong type of wash.
Jantrix Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 It would seem to me the safest way to go is an acrylic wash. Just standard craft paints thinned with water.
10thumbs Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I agree with Rob. If it's not right, wash it off with running water.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 I agree with Rob. If it's not right, wash it off with running water.I use acrylics almost exclusively for this type of detailing as well. Steve
Speedfreak Posted August 23, 2015 Author Posted August 23, 2015 Hey thanks Rob, Michael, and , Steven. I haven't checked this thread lately, glad I did, Acrylic sounds like the safe way to go.
