monkeyclaw Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Good race for sure; I was really surprised to see that the flying lizard Porsche that got chucked into the wall early actually FINISHED; after being fixed! The one issue I have with the speed channel coverage is that they only really spotlight the big $$$ teams of LMP 1 & 2; GT 1 is a gioven....CORVETTE; but they (speed) don't seem to give much coverage at all to the guys eeking out the season in GT2 ....I did not even hear a single reference made to the FORD GT of Robertson racing being on the circuit; which SHOULD be a big deal, to have another AMERICAN manufacturer running in the American Lemans series...and it was really nice to see a big badass green monster (Aston Martin DBR9) back out there..........but the day belongs to PORSCHE...that's for sure..........matt

I think the big problem there is not much interest. I mean who are they racing against. They are not strong enough to win overall, and they don't have any competition in class. What more is there to say about it? Yeah, they didn't really say anything about the Ford GT until it crashed out. It was nice to see the Aston back, but I think it was more of a LM trial. Yes, Rodger had been jinxed at Sebring. I am sure he can sleep easier with that monkey off his back. I wonder if Acura will be able to battle the P-cars. Dyson Porsche ran real strong, too. It good to see Porsche on top again. They didn't do so well at Daytona, beaten by Mazda.

The LMP1 cars are at a big disadvantage now with the way the rules are set in ALMS. The same thing happened with the GTP cars and the Camel Lights back in the day. It ended up killing the series. They did talk about the Ford GT a little bit but not a whole lot and that was before it crashed out. The front of the car looks like one of the old FABCAR Daytona Prototypes. I wasn't too impressed with it. The car is really meant for GT3 racing. The Ford was not the only American car racing in the category. There was the new Corvette as well as the Dodge Viper. The Aston Martin DBR9 that ran will be running the full season in the ALMS. It is a privateer team with factory backing. The car is an ex Prodrive car. There was also an Aston Martin running in the GT2 that was doing okay. I will not be surprised to see Ferrari get handicapped in the GT2 category to balance out the performance index. As for Mazda winning the Daytona, the performance index in that category is set up for them to win. Porsche and the other cars are extremely handicapped.
Nick F40 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 (edited) Well, of course I fell asleep at 20 min to go. But I figured the Penske Porsche got it. Those Peugeots weren't doing to good at the end. Acura sure had a good day. Of course the C6R won, there were three cars, 2 out of the three were C6R's Which Vette was it? I personally like the GT2 class more and the Flying Lizards were hot all day. The Ferrari had led the pace but made stupid braking judgments and plowed into one of the GT3's and went of course, the GT3's have had problems with people running them off the road the whole race. I figured they would win. That GT was impressive with Doran power but lack of practice was holding back but they said it would get better. I can't wait untill that BMW enters. Why was the one DBR9 in the GT2 class? I guess the red fishmouth with the lipstick one. Edited March 16, 2008 by Nick F40
Brendan Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Why was the one DBR9 in the GT2 class? I guess the red fishmouth with the lipstick one. The Aston Martin in the GT2 class was a Vanquish not the DB9, but I could be wrong. They've been planning on racing in GT2 and GT3 over in Europe. The car that race yesterday should be here for the full season. It's a privateer car with factory backing. Aston Martin is planning on racing in three categories this year. LMP1 which will be a Lola Closed Cockpit running a V12 as a full factory team. GT1 the DBR9 which will be both privateer and factory effort. And GT2 which will be a privateer effort with factory backing. To let you know the GT1 class was won by the #3 Corvette with the sister car several laps behind.
Nick F40 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the info and they seem to be promising. Ya, I knew one of them was a few laps behind but that's cool the #3 got it. Was that with Johnny O Connell? I still like the GT2 last lap race, that was classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbl_Yjm7VBk...feature=related Edited March 16, 2008 by Nick F40

Zoom Zoom Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 The Aston Martin in the GT2 class was a Vanquish not the DB9, but I could be wrong. Difficult to get exact answer right now; race results show the DBRS9 was the GT2 car (AM never campaigned the Vanquish), there was a DBR9 GT1 car that crashed in practice and didn't race. Supposedly the Vantage is to be the factory GT2 car, and my friends that were at Sebring said the GT2 car was a Vantage, but I think they're mistaken. I'll see pics later tonight.

Aston Martin's site says the Barwell entry for the season was supposed to be the new GT2 classed Vantage. Which makes things very confusing as Aston now have 4 cars that run in different classes but all look practically the same GT1 – DBR9; GT2 - Vantage GT2; GT3 – DBRS9; GT4 – Vantage N24. But as ZoomZoom says, the ALMS site's results page lists it as a DBRS9 ?! Edited March 16, 2008 by Happy Martian

Yeah, I saw the ALMS site after I posted, no mention at all of any Vantage...but then my friends swore that the car was a Vantage...I guess their photos will prove them right or wrong.

Porsche) battling it out literially blow for blow after 12 hrs at Sebring it comes down to the last corner of the last lap. That was some great stuff.
Nick F40 Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Yeah, of course after 12 grueling hours, they still had enough to battle it out and even though they could have done that earlier, it was down to the last lap and few couple turns, pure classic. Of course, when I play Forza 2 I crash after a 10 lap race on the last lap and last corner!

Just found this on Barwell Motorsports site: March 5th, 2008 (05 March 2008) The Drayson-Barwell American Le Mans Series team has confirmed that it will run Paul Drayson’s Aston Martin DBRS9 GT3-spec car in the first round of the championship at Sebring on March 15th. This is the same car that Paul and Jonny Cocker took to second place in last year’s British GT Championship. The car will run in its normal E85 Bio-Ethanol fuel configuration, with a few endurance modifications to help it cope with the incredibly demanding 12-Hour Sebring classic. Whilst the team waits for the delivery of its new Aston Martin Vantage GT2, it is likely that the GT3 car will also be used in the second round of the series at St.Petersburg on April 5th. The DBRS9 is eligible to compete in the GT2S class of the ALMS, but may be the only car in this class. These two events will provide an ideal platform for the team to learn about the ALMS, before the arrival of the GT2 car for round three at Long Beach on April 19th. Drayson-Barwell will then be entering the new Vantage GT2 in the most competitive and intense GT category series in the world. Edited March 16, 2008 by Happy Martian
