So the amt 1957 TBird appears undersize. Is the amt 1956 also undersized? Are they based on the same tooling? I was wanting to do a Fiesta Red 56 for some time.

No, they're different tooling. The AMT's '57 always seemed narrow to me and just............small. The '56 appears right to me in 1/25 compared to other cars of that scale and size. I tried fitting the '56's chassis into the '57's body once, and man-----was it ever WIDE compared to the '57's body! That's one of the clues that makes me think the '57's are a bit underscaled.

Just an observation............

Well just shows to go ya, when you get over the half century mark, things can change! One of the things that change (and not always for the better) is memory. It dawned on me that maybe I should go to the third floor of my house where all my kits are and take a peek inside the box of the AMT '57 T-Bird kit that I have. Sure enough, I have an unopened package of Norm's set for the T-Bird-------PE screeen and all for the grille! I don't even remember when I bought it from Norm, but there it is in 3D. :D

So in the words of the late, great Emily Litella..........

Just the same, thanks fellas for all the info and the great links! I still want MCG's set when it comes out as no doubt there will be other things on the fret that I can use. I don't plan on starting this build till later this year, but I figure now's a good time to start getting all the bits and pieces together.

See Bill? The cat did not take it. You had it all along.

Bill Thanks!

I started on the 57 Tbird many years ago and after paint I lost interest as it didn't look right. Maybe your right about the size.

I've got the AMT '56 Bird floorpan, interior sides & frame under the AMT '57 body. It's been A LOT more work that I was expecting. The AMT '56 Bird is kind of craptasic kit (IMO) compared to the others they were putting out at the time. At least it provides a decent start to a conversion. I recently got to discuss with Larry Boothe the modifications he made to his killer '57 from many moons ago (rear fins are quite off). Fix the fins and it greatly improves the look of the model. I had to graft some of the '56 nose on as well since my car will be a gasser and not have the front bumper. Have fun with the dash too!
