Mike77 Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) I know super glue can be used on resin, and of course standard model glue is fine for styrene, but what's best to use when mating resin parts to styrene parts? My hunch is to use super glue but I know it doesn't grab styrene like model glue does. Any help is appreciated. Edited January 15, 2016 by Mike77
JTalmage Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 You need to use superglue. CA glue. I use zap-a-gap green label
astroracer Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 As stated, superglue or 5 min epoxy. Styrene glue depends on "melting" the two pieces together. Resin doesn't melt so styrene glue will not hold. Superglue or epoxy hold things together with a mechanical bond which is what is needed for your application.Mark
Snake45 Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 +1 on superglue or epoxy. If the part won't be subjected to stress, superglue will do fine. If it will, epoxy is better. If you're going to need to sand/blend the resin and styrene together, use a 12 or 24 hour cure epoxy, as the 5-minute stuff cures "rubbery" and doesn't sand well (if at all). I like regular J-B Weld unless I need the joint to be clear or semi-invisible for some reason.
High octane Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I usually use Devcon 5-Minute Epoxy for ALL my gluing chores and it seems to work for me, whether I'm gluing resin, spark plug wires, guitar string, clear plastic, etc.
Mike77 Posted January 16, 2016 Author Posted January 16, 2016 Thank you for the input guys. I have a resin semi truck hood that has a very slight warp to the sides. I want to straighten them by gluing a piece of styrene to the insides to keep them straight, so there will be very minor stress to keep the resin straight. It sounds like some type of epoxy would be the wisest choice.
Art Anderson Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 CA glue works just fine for joining resin to styrene, and in my experience, will stand quite a bit of stress. I used to use it for joining resin panels to styrene for making masters for resin casting: Removing a plastic or resin master body shell from a newly cured RTV mold is just about as much stress as I have ever put on a body shell--almost never experienced a failure of a glue joint doing that.Art
