Aaronw Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I saw a post from Rob (Jantrix) which mentioned the Peking to Paris Challenge. It got me thinking a vintage endurance race community build might be fun, Peking to Paris, La Carrera Panamericana, Pikes Peak Hill Climb, European Rally Championship, early years of the WRC etc. A couple of websites for ideashttp://www.endurorally.com/http://panamrace.com/
cobraman Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Funny you mention Pikes Peak. I have a Pikes Peak AC Cobra in the planning and getting parts stage.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) Interesting. I've been planning a replica of Ak Miller's "Caballo de Hierro" for a long time, have most of the bits assembled, and the scratch-built parts should be pretty easy, due to the simplicity of the actual car. In both '53 and '54, the car finished quite well in the Panamericana, and there are plenty of reference photos of it available online. It's a real hot-rod, built from junkyard parts to race against the big guys. Paddy Hopkirk's Monte Carlo Rally-winning Mini of 1964 is another one I've had plans for, and have all the parts. Bobby Unser's 1960 Pikes Peak winner, a Pontiac powered sprint car, is already on the "to build" shelf too. All the reference pix, most of the parts on hand. Hmmm..decisions, decisions... Now, if the deadline is only about 20 years out, I might finish one. Steve McQueen finished second at Sebring in 1970, co-driving a Porsche 908/2. McQueen had one leg in a cast during the event. Pretty impressive. What makes it important to me though, is that I was there. I only have a very few parts for this one, so there's absolutely NO possibility of it getting done... cobraman Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 (edited) I don't know Bill, 20 years might be a bit optimistic. : ) Sorry Bill, I would love to see you finish some of those cool projects you have going. Edited January 31, 2016 by cobraman correction
Crazy Ed Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Not sure how this went from Endurance to Pikes Peak, and E&WRC all in one Post. Heck Even the First Pikes Peak race winner didn't take 25 minutes to finish. I'm as easily distracted as anyone, but staying with something for 25 minutes isn't quite what I'd call an Endurance anything. Oh Wait, Hang On........... Never Mind
Aaronw Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 Some neat ideas there, but apparently not much interest.
