gbdolfans Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Hi all, I went to my local Michael's and found they had some cans of Liquitex Professional Spray paint on clearance. They were in the clearance section they have in the middle of store. They are usually $11.99 a 12 oz. can. They were marked down to $5.99 and when I got to counter, they rang up $3.99. I got one can of Cadmium Red Medium Hue.I have not used these before.Has anyone here used it and how is it.If it is any good,I will go tomorrow and get more. They only had 4 or 5 of the colors on clearance, not all colors.Just a FYIGeorge
Phirewriter Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 This paint is a water based acrylic based on their artist's color pallet. They are one of only a few companies offering water based spray paint. They will not dry with any amount of gloss, satin to mat finish at best. These will have to be cleared. In addition some of the colors may be a bit thick and hide delicate details.
gbdolfans Posted February 27, 2016 Author Posted February 27, 2016 Thanks Michael, which clear should I use??
Phirewriter Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Once it's dried completely any glosscoat you feel comfortable with should be OK. As always if you are unfamiliar with the base I would test shoot on a spare body/scrap plastic to familiarize yourself with the spray and adhesion properties. Acrylic is a type of polymer and dries similar to a plastic coating. Waterbourne automotive paints and Createx Auto Air are also similar in that they need a urethane or solvent topcoat for gloss. That said they generally should hold up to all but the strongest solvents. Testors/Tamyia lacquer and most enamel should be fine for clear coating. Hope this helps.
dublin boy Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 My local arts and crafts type shop have Liquidex rattle cans for sale for a while now. it's not a model shop although they have some in stock.I asked how it would work on models, they didn't know but gave me a small test can (30 ml) which was nice.It came out dreadfully thick and lumpy, and all I paint with is rattle cans, so I do know how to use them. It's a while ago now, but I think you can actually wash the paint off.
