Xingu Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Starting to plan out my next build. Does anyone know a source for 1955 Chevy colors, Harvest Gold and Indian Ivory. Would prefer a rattle can, but can shoot it from my airbrush if needed (after a lot of practice). Is there something that is pretty close to those colors and readily available?

Would prefer a rattle can, but can shoot it from my airbrush if needed (after a lot of practice). Is there something that is pretty close to those colors and readily available?India Ivory would probably be pretty easy. It's basically just an off white.Duplicolor or Testors Ford "Wimbledon White" would probably work fine. The yellow might be a little tougher to find an exact match, but it shouldn't be hard to find something very close.Testors used to have a "Butternut Yellow" but it was a little lighter shade.I think it was a '69 GM color. But I'm not sure if they make it anymore.Of course, if you wanted an exact match, you could always order from MCW.They carry some colors in a rattle can too.I'll bet they would have something close in a spray can, & their spray paint is every bit as nice as their airbrush colors.I checked & they have about 10 different shades of yellow in a spray can.But they run $15.00 a can & there's really no way from looking at the website what shade you would be getting. You'd have to do a little detective work, or call or e-mail them. Harry Joy Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I looked for a LONG time, literally years, for the right shade for my 53 Belair. Finally this year, I made a mix with Tamiya paints - XF-04 Yellow-Green, X-06 Yellow, and Flat White. Easier than I expected:
Harry Joy Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 But in another thread, this company is mentioned and they have Harvest Gold: http://www.mcwautomotivefinishes.com/paint/gm.html
Mike Chernecki Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Scale Finishes has all the 1955 Chevy colors in airbrush ready bottles. As an example of 5-6-7 Chevy paints from Scale Finishes, here is a '56 Nomad I am working on, done in Laurel Green/Crocus Yellow.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 After looking at some 1:1 photos, I'm pretty confident that the Testors pale yellow, (actually a Ford color called "Phoenician Yellow") would be pretty close. A little pale, but close All depends on how exact you want to be. As Harry & Mike said, MCW & Scale Finishes will give you an exact match. Nice color combo by the way! Steve
Xingu Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 I have always liked that color combination. I bought this airbrush and compressor for a reason, may as well learn how to use it.Thanks for the info. I had heard of Scale Finishes, but not MCW.

Mine were from MCW. Looks a little different than yours, but lighting makes a big difference. The difference between indoor & natural lighting is dramatic! Steve
Mike Chernecki Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Steve, beautiful Pontiac. I gave up trying to get a good picture showing the true color, hard color to photograph, may try again outside on a sunny day.
Mike Chernecki Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Michael, if you do decide to order the Harvest Gold & Ivory, remember to grab a bottle of Neptune Green. Every '55 I have seen in this combination had a Neptune green dash and steering wheel.
Xingu Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 Already on the Neptune Green. Like you said, all my research only showed the green interior. What would the darker color be?
Mike Chernecki Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I don't think there was a darker green color that was painted, the vinyl had a darker shade green, but I have no idea what would match. Other than finding some original vinyl samples and having it color matched.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Steve, beautiful Pontiac. I gave up trying to get a good picture showing the true color, hard color to photograph, may try again outside on a sunny day. It is an odd color. Available on the '57 as well. I originally was going to use it for a '56 Nomad too, but when I was researching for a color for my '58 & I found this photo.......well, that clinched it. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Already on the Neptune Green. Like you said, all my research only showed the green interior. What would the darker color be? I would just save this photo & use it for reference for mixing your own darker green. Should be pretty easy to do. Steve

Steve My uncle had a '56 Nomad in this color, beautiful car.
Xingu Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 Looks like the 1:1 car sites call it light or medium green / dark green. Will have to look at a few paint samples to try and match. Thanks for the help.I have saved a few reference photos.
JTalmage Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I prefer to use rattle can because to me it's easier and less equipment to try and store but that's my preference. And what's nice nowadays is you can go to your local automotive paint supply store and if you have the original paint code or a cross reference paint code then they'll be able to mix up the original color and put it in a can for you. That is what I like to do if the off the shelf hobby colors don't suite me. Also with a can of mixed paint you have enough to do several cars. I bought an 11oz can of Silver Moss which is an early 60s Ford color. It takes several coats because it comes out thin but it looks great under some Tamiya clear. After I took the pics I realized I needed another coat on the hood Only downside is most places don't mix lacquer anymore but luckily the place I went to still does.
