snacktruck67 Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I was wondering if the different brands of paint available for air brushes is strictly a personal choice or is there one paint company better than others. I see so many of you guys use HOK, Testors, Zero Pints and Scale Finish.
StevenGuthmiller Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Don't forget MCW. I would say it's more of a personal thing, but keep in mind that different companies use different paint types. Some are enamels, some acrylics & some lacquers. Not that familiar with the rest, but MCW paints are all automotive lacquers formulated from original specs. I use their paints mostly for their huge array of available colors. And the paint itself is thinned, ready for airbrush, & fantastic stuff!! Steve
snacktruck67 Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 Yea I forgot the MCW. I probably forgot other ones also. Thanks for the reminder.
astroracer Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 And don't forget nail polish. This is lacquer also and thins and mixes just like the automotive paint. I use it a lot. A couple of bottles will cover a 1/24th-1/25th car very well. A buck or two at the dollar stores and Big Lots... Very cheap compared to the other brands and the color selection is ENDLESS!Mark
snacktruck67 Posted May 4, 2016 Author Posted May 4, 2016 Thankx Mark, that is another one I missed. Very true indeed, that nail polish really does look good. I should have realized that one, as my wire is a licensed nail tech.
snacktruck67 Posted May 4, 2016 Author Posted May 4, 2016 Darn another one. However what is the happy medium or do all of them have good qualities in different ways?
Mooneyzs Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I would say it is more of a personal preference on the brand of paint one uses. I personally use mostly PPG base coat /clear coat and House of Kolor for my automotive paints. I know friends that use Dupont, Sikkens and even some that use Sherwin williams automotive paint. As I have said its a personal preference. If I remember correct when I talked to Jameson from Scale finishes when he was here at a show last year that all of his paint is Dupont.

Rider Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Dollar store nail polish is the best bang for the money. I use it thinned with Acetone 50/50. works great, then clear coated with 2part poly.I like Acetone as a thinner because it evaporates at a much faster rate then lacquer thinner. I also use it to thin enamels and Model Master acrylics. I am conducting a long term test with enamel thinned with Acetone and have laid Laquer over it. Normally the lacquer will crack when sprayed over enamel. 2wks later and no sign of checking or cracking. Most of the Model Master acrylic sprays right out of the jar no thinning needed, same with Zero paint.
