Nytrozilla Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 (edited) I've had a terrible track record of finishing builds lately and I'm trying to get back on track with a second attempt at an Out Of The Box model. (The 1st attempt was a 1/16 Hawaiian FC). I actually HAVE to finish this one, because there is a surprise with the completed build. Your only hint is, I said Out Of The Box. So here's where I stand so far. I'm ready for assembly of the chassis and the body is ready for paint. I'll mask off the front and rear windshield frames, along with the spoiler and tail light area. The body will get a silver base coat before HOK Pearl White. The tinwork will stay black. I've made some fire extinguisher brackets from stretched sprue and the parachute straps are cut from the instruction sheet and hit with a gold paint pen. The oil pan is the only piece of chrome that didn't get stripped and reshot with SpazStix Chrome. The seat belt decals are Slixx. The pad stamped tires (lettering is "off-arc") got scuffed all around. I used an Xtra Coarse file on the tread and a polishing sheet on the outer surfaces. I've finally been using my airbrush booth and I'm luvin' it. I got a little over aggressive on the headers, but I like it. Mods to the headers includes removing the molded in braces and making new ones from sprue. The ends still need to be drilled out One thing I might try is to make header flames out of the spare clear plastic from between the windshields. I'll cut away the windshields, then shape the excess into flames, shoot it with clear red, then highlight the edges with orange. They'll be attached using stretched sprue and inserted into the headers. See y'all next time around. Enjoy the pics. Edited June 17, 2016 by Nytrozilla
am73grand Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Nice work so far! The tires really look great scuffed up like that. Very realistic
Nytrozilla Posted May 6, 2016 Author Posted May 6, 2016 Thanks guys. I'm getting ready for the IPMS Best of the West contest tomorrow, so hopefully an update early next week.
Chris in Berwyn Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 What happened to the Chevy wheelstander? Did you finish it? I have this kit too and am thinking of actually building it and getting it off the shelf. Strange how this kit has somewhat crude headers, while the Bounty Hunter Mustang uses the same chassis and engine but has much nicer headers.

Nytrozilla Posted May 11, 2016 Author Posted May 11, 2016 Alrighty then. All recovered from the Best of the West show. Oh, my aching back and legs and feet and other assorted old guy stuff. Got the engine asembled today, so I thought I'd celebrate with a mock up. Enjoy.
Nytrozilla Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Thanx Guys. I appreciate you looking in. Got a bunch of assembly done today. I might have to start paint on the body to keep up with myself. This is going much better than I had hoped. Guess I need to buy a few more....... Enjoy the pics.
10thumbs Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Hey Joe....no, no. Not "whatcha doin' with that gun in your hand".Good to see you're doing something other than grillin' and chillin' out on your terrace and otherwise enjoying life. Lots of folks have to work for a living. You've done your job, hat's off to you bud. Well done!Good progress here, I like!Greetings.
Nytrozilla Posted May 16, 2016 Author Posted May 16, 2016 Hey Joe....no, no. Not "whatcha doin' with that gun in your hand". Good to see you're doing something other than grillin' and chillin' out on your terrace and otherwise enjoying life. Lots of folks have to work for a living. You've done your job, hat's off to you bud. Well done! Good progress here, I like! Greetings. Thanks a ton Michael. Good to see you again man. Yeah, after 45 years manual labor gets really, really old. Here's the last mock up before body paint. It looks nekkid without the headers. Actually, it looks naked without wires and plumbing. I'll have to cut away the windshields from each other and get them shaped and tested on the body before I start masking. I have to admit, the thought crossed my mind to leave the body black and badly hand letter "This Space 4 Rent" on the doors. But no. Just a wandering brain wave out of control.
Art Laski Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Nice, Joe! That looks like a pretty cool kit, and you're doing it justice.
Nytrozilla Posted May 18, 2016 Author Posted May 18, 2016 Nice, Joe! That looks like a pretty cool kit, and you're doing it justice.Thanx Brother Art. I'm sooooo glad that this reissue was NOT the atrocious generic Challenger F/C from Model King. I've bought 4 more since starting this project.Very nice.. Cant wait to see paint laid down.. Thank you Darrell. That should happen in the next day or so. I'm anxious too.
gtx6970 Posted May 21, 2016 Posted May 21, 2016 (edited) Thanx Brother Art. I'm sooooo glad that this reissue was NOT the atrocious generic Challenger F/C from Model King. ?Its the exact same kit....just different decals and box art Edited May 21, 2016 by gtx6970
Nytrozilla Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 Hey folks. Wiped out my back a couple of days ago. Thanks for keeping up.?Its the exact same kit....just different decals and box artBill, I respect your knowledge, especially in light of the fact that I don't follow reissue facts. However, I remember the frustrations of correcting fit, terrible seam mismatches on the frame and body, not to mention crater sized ejection marks on the Model King version.Even if all of those issues were fixed, why does the MK chassis have front coil over shocks and the one I'm doing now, doesn't? I see they share similar parts, but even the engine setback is different, as is the cockpit tin.If they made all of these changes before the reissue, I applaud them. And you for knowing the difference.
comp1839 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 great looking build joe! a challenger WITH a hemi AND big tires.......gotta love it.
Codi Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Hey Joe, any pics of the box / kit this car came from by chance? I'm not savvy on particular releases by the model company's. This one looks like its going together really well. Flames from the headers, I DID read that right? cheers
Nytrozilla Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 That's right boys. It's got a HEMI, Big Tires and Header Flames (Hopefully). The flames work in my head for the time being. That's why I haven't drilled out the headers yet. There's actually 2 ways of doing them and both mods stay within Box Stock contest rules. Only using materials that came in the box. And don't think that I didn't consider stretched sprue plug wires. Here's the box art and the front end differences. On a silly note, even the body props are different.
gtx6970 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 I built the recent model king issue . and it doesn't have a coil spring suspension
Nytrozilla Posted May 22, 2016 Author Posted May 22, 2016 I think I have an answer to our dilemma. At least, it's my best guess. I bought the MK kit a while back as an "Open Box" from a show vendor. I checked the box for total parts. It had the decal sheet, but no instructions. Is it possible that parts from a different version were swapped out? What came in the box certainly doesn't match the side box chassis pics. I kept the box for parts storage. What I built doesn't match the art. Question now is, what the heck did I build? Also, I owe you and MK an apology
gtx6970 Posted May 22, 2016 Posted May 22, 2016 Here is a model king issue i built last year.....i have an original issue soapy sales car and they sure look like the exact same kit to me.
