David Thibodeau Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 I am building this for a nice guy in New York named John Snider. He goes by "Hillbilly deluxe" on the board. He won this kit, and the fork set from a a local hobbyshopRaffle I think. I convinced him to purchase the Zero paint to make it accurate. For the most part it will be built out of the box with detail painting and the fork set. Here is a picture below of what I started with. I always like to start with the cowlings first. Here is a trick I use to get rid of those seams when you put the parts together that have them. In this case its the tank. I use Ambroid pro weld liquid plastic cement or in this case plastistruct cement. Glue the tank halves together and "Squeeze" until the plastic oozes.. that way you let it dry and sand off the seam flush and smooth. This is cleaner, easier, and smoother than putty. You also eliminate the possibility of shrinkage! Here are all the cowlings were primed with duplicolor white primer and painted with Zero Kawi green through the airbrush... this color is perfect and suits the bike nicely. I cannot tell you how nice this paint shoots through my airbrush! Each panel also recieved one coat of dupont clear. Once the clear had cured I decaled all the panels and used alot of microsole decal solvent to snug them down. Once they cured overnight, I cleaned off the residue and recleared all pieces with dupont clear. Here is my favorite part. The rear seat cowl belly.... I love that NINJA logo!! Tamiya instructs you to paint the front fender TS-29 and then add the center decal. I opted to cover it in SMS Hi-def CF decal. Then add the green decal and clear... Finally, I assembled and primed the frame and rear swingarm. The paint I used is the black that comes with the Kawasaki Green kit. It laid down nicely and smooth and gave the frame a semi gloss poweder coated look. More to come soon!!
CarModDave Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 (edited) Hey Dave! What are up, dude? I'm sure he'll be happy with the end result! I look forward to seeing if you run into any snags as I'm also working on the same kit. However I'm a glutton for punishment and, besides the Tamiya fork set, I'm making myself silly with another detail set from Top Studio. Looking forward to the next installment............. Wildrice Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 Great work so far. Where do you purchase Zero paint?
David Thibodeau Posted April 13, 2008 Author Posted April 13, 2008 Great work so far. Where do you purchase Zero paint? www.hiroboy.com Thanks guys..... DaveT
Nick F40 Posted April 13, 2008 Posted April 13, 2008 wow, love these bikes and the color. I saw one at the NNL and I want to build one now.
uniongoon Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Astounding as usual. Thanks for the helpful tips as you go. Makes it so much more interesting for us mere mortals.
JHDrew Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Those are just the best engineered kits going. You are going to love the front fork set. I just got some Silk Cut purple from Hiro Boy. It looks like it lays down real nice. Keep us posted Dave.
David Thibodeau Posted June 2, 2008 Author Posted June 2, 2008 Well this one needed to be getting along so I did a bit on it this weekend.... Engine complete using various alclads and washes: Engine permanantly installed in the frame: Wheels and tires complete. The green stripes got cursed at a few times! : Finally I did some CF work with SMS Hi def decals on the rear seat back, airbox, and rear fender followed by dupont clear more to come! DaveT
Nick F40 Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 The engine and wheels are insane! The carbon fibre work is flawless.
David Thibodeau Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 The engine and wheels are insane! The carbon fibre work is flawless. Thanks Nick....
David Thibodeau Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 And I am back on it again..... Here is the beauty of the Detail up parts set.... A pre painted spring and nice brass anodized oil reservoir! The rear swing arm is ready to go in the frame.... the chain I really detailed to look as real as possible... lastly the swingarm was installed..... next up is exhaust staining.
djway3474 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Your picts made me go get one. Question on your orders from accross the pond. Is shipping very expensive? I looked at the Hiro site and I found the paint but could not find the kawasaki forks. I saw a Yamaha listed twice. Thanks DJ
David Thibodeau Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 More progress on this one.... Exhaust is done using TS-14 directly over the plastic, then shooting light coats of HOK CHROME. I picked this up at the HS and its a great stand in for alclad chrome! Once dry I masked the weld seams and used CLear orange, blue, and red to do the heat staining with airbrush..... Here is the pipes installed on the frame.
Nick F40 Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) Like what Cruz said, me too, as I am a bit into MotoGP and AMA Superbikes myself! Those shocks look real and the whole swingarm/brake/wheel looks amazing and that exhaust discoloration is amazement to me because I love the look and the colors are perfect and yours looks like real discoloration, I would love to do it to my PIAA Accord I'm building but I need an airbrush though! David Thibodeau Posted June 25, 2008 Author Posted June 25, 2008 Thanks guys.... this one is close!! Front fork is done using the DP tamiya fork set. I built the wheel stand which I painted with duplicolor chrome enamel to give it a polished aluminum look and threw the rear seat cowl and tank on to see it take shape....
Nick F40 Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Wow, starting to take shape, you'll see me probably first on the comments! I love the look of the fairingless.
