I was s'sposed to build this model for a buddie o'er a year ago.

Everytime I opened the kit, the amount of masking work involved scared me off.

I will be in Arizona in May, and he's coming from Alburquerque to meet me picking up a few models I've built for him and his father...So thought this would be a good excuse to get this thing built.

The kit itself is a curbside with very few parts, but the paint scheme involves a lot of masking.

A printed masking sheet is included in the kit, but the patterns are not pre-cut...so ya gotta get the scissors out.

Tamiya did something different with this kit...they pre-glued the windscreen, door glass and headlight glass to the body.

If you do not get the mask for these areas dead on...you'll be cleanin off and/or adding paint after removing the mask.

Clearcoating o'er the decals becomes a problem, cuz now ya have to mask the glass off again.

The headlight buckets are chunky looking, I used silver decal o'er the edges to simulate duct tape, don't know if they did or not...but looks better than not covering the edges.

Personally, I'd raher not have the glass parts pre-attached.

Here's few pix of the build so far, almost done

Wow, I always loved their styling. Yours is great so far. No rear brake air deflector discs? :(

The often didn't run them on rear... and this car in particular didn't run them on the front either, but as I recall, having this kit, too, it is an old slot car kit and they are molded in the wheel so you don't have much option.

I agree, awesome job on the most dominate sports car ever built.

BTW that is what has stopped me from build any of the several old slot 962s I have: dealing with the clear already attached to the body.

They didn't typically tape the light covers

ahhh thanks for clearing it up Chris.

why would you want glass already in? :(

I am not sure, you'd have to ask the slot car guys, but I suspect it's a durablity issue. Slots get knocked around alot and I suspect Tamiya didn't want the clear falling out. So they made sure it was going to fall out.

thanx for the comments...something had to be done with the light covers, they did not look right at all

I was not aware of the slot car history on these cars...that makes sense from Tamiyas standpoint, don't want your clients chasing windscreens all o'er the track :P

Awesome build. I have done 2 of this version of the car and have done many more of other versions. It was rather nice that Tamiya gave you masking to do the paint scheme. Made my life a lot easier. I wouldn't even attempt to try this without the masking tape.

To clarify, this kit was never a slot car. It was originally a FROM-A Porsche kit #24089. A lot of people get confused because it does not have an engine. If you have a copy of the complete works of Tamiya, it will show you everything they've made up to 2000 and there is no mention of the 962 ever being a slot car.

Thanx,

do you have an idea why Tamiya went with pre-installed glass on these kits?

also, are we gonna c'ya Sunday in Campbell?

As far as I know, a bunch of companies were doing it at that time. I think it was mainly an experiment. You see a lot of it in Bandai science fiction kits. Personally, I'm not a big fan of it.

I plan to be there Sunday. Then I'll probably head on home that night. Nice long 8-hour drive. Is there anything you want me bring down? I'll be showing at the IPMS at the Santa Clara Convention Center on Saturday.

Sorry, it was a former Tamtech 1/24 RC car, at least the shell was. They were often converted to slots and still are a common slot body. I just remembered it was never originally ment to be a static model kit.
