Funkychiken Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 I started this build for a Group Build for the 50 years anniversary of the 911. It still hasn't been finished. So I thought I'd add the history here and pick it back up... Starting with box art & sprues:
Funkychiken Posted September 12, 2016 Author Posted September 12, 2016 (edited) The wheels were stripped, and sprayed with Alclad II, not many coats of chrome, to give it a dull or dark look. Edited September 12, 2016 by Funkychiken
Funkychiken Posted September 12, 2016 Author Posted September 12, 2016 Chassis was primed with a water based primer (which is a bit gloopy and difficult to airbrush) then masked and finished with good old Tamiya X-18
Funkychiken Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 Thanks Ash! Interior in, skull white aerosol & Tamiya X-18 airbrush...
Funkychiken Posted September 13, 2016 Author Posted September 13, 2016 Lots of painful masking & spraying, then remasking to hit the overspray etc!
Funkychiken Posted September 15, 2016 Author Posted September 15, 2016 2 weeks ago I finished the body... or I thought I had. It was sprayed with nail polish heavily diluted with Tamiya lacquer. Then left for a few weeks & finished with Zero paints 2K clear. There were 3 or 4 dust spots, and so I thought I'd use a sanding regime on just those areas, looks like I'm going to rub out & polish the whole car. the un polished look was probably good enough, but uneven in some key areas & I wanted to get rid of the dust...
iamsuperdan Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Is the Revell kit a reboxing of the Italeri kit? I swear the parts and especially the wheels look identical to my 993 coupe kit. Anyway, love the subject, and I love the old school early 90s paint scheme. I spent most of the 90s detailing at the local Porsche dealership while I went through university, and spend 5 years selling them after graduating. That colour is very close to a special order 964 that we had around 92-93. And a very similar interior colour choice was fairly common back then. Looking at your build makes me nostalgic! I should go find the pics I took. I was always snapping photos at work back then!
slusher Posted September 16, 2016 Posted September 16, 2016 Great looking interior, love the color choices...
Funkychiken Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I'm on the final stretch with this one, probably 3 years after the 50th anniversary of the 911...!Only have to attach the body and sort out some windscreen wipers. However, the body is proving quite difficult to attach. The front bumper does not line up & has very little land to apply adhesive to, and part of the engine is in the way when you try to offer up the body, there is also a strip of styrene that is about 0.8mm high & 5cm long, on either side that is the only thing that keeps the body on. That may be fine, but the front window happens to clash with the dashboard, so I'm having to shave off bits of the interior to get it to fit. I'm also going to have to make some attachment flaps to have some land to actually glue too. Terrible design of this kit. I'm hoping Fujimi's 911 Enthusiast models are better...
Funkychiken Posted May 1, 2017 Author Posted May 1, 2017 Some progress on this model. But it's always 3 steps forward, two steps back. It is really badly designed, there is no surface area to glue surfaces together, so I have applied as much glue as I dared, taped it together, and then after a couple of days, I applied loads more glue after removing the tape... Unfortunately this meant getting glue on the car, so I had to do a bit of sanding, polishing, and on the black trim, re-painting. Then it sat too high - like about 3mm too high. so I've hacked up the front suspension and fitted spacers in and cut the struts down... feels like it's lasting forever!
BVC500 Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 These are reboxes of the Italeri kits, and build off the 964 era cars, so the chassis, suspension and many interior details are incorrect for 993 cars. I too like the color combo!
Scalper Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 Nice work so far. Interior is nice. Engine looks really good with the wires and harness
drodg Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 I have a 993 Coupe and have been tempted to build one of these. I don't like the wheels as they look like 964 wheels and not the cup wheels that came on the 993. Anyhow you are doing a great job and I am interested to see how the car ends up finished. Thanks for the photos etc.

Thanks for the photos etc. I've finished it now, just waiting for the number plates to be added, then it''' be in the finished section. I too didn't like the wheels, too small, and not low profile enough...
