unclescott58 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 I did know where to place this, since it's not really about a car or truck model. It really didn't seem to fit under "All of the Rest" at this point in the build. So I hope you indulge me with my question here.I'm building the reissue of Revell's Flash Gordon model, put out by Atlantis Models. The kit comes with Flash and a Martian. I've already given the Martian a nice shade of metallic green. But, what to paint the two bases these models stand on? The box art shows a picture with kind a tan surface, a gray mountain in the back ground, and a very dark sky. Since Flash is encountering a Martian, I'm assuming he's on Mars? But, the box art doesn't look like Mars as we know it. Even back then.I want to paint the bases for this kit that kind of rusty red the surface of Mars has. I'm trying to figure out what paint to use that will look somewhat convincing. Any suggestions out there?
Snake45 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 You could use Testor/Model Master Rust, or Leather, and then dry-brush with a flat tan of some kind. Or paint it the tan, and dry-brush that with the Rust.Or think outside the box. Does your town have an arts/crafts store, such as Michaels or AC Moore? They have AMAZING selections of crafts paints in every shade you can imagine, and they're cheap, too--most around $1-$2. Take a look and pick out something that looks "Martian" to you.
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 Duplicolor red 'sandable' primer is a nice rusty red. Maybe a little too intense for what you want, but some yellow misted over it could give a little sandy texture.
unclescott58 Posted October 1, 2016 Author Posted October 1, 2016 (edited) Searching around I found some gamers acrylic paint by a company called Vallejo. And have an Oxide Orange paint for doing rust that looks like it should fit the bill. I just ordered a bottle from a vendor on eBay. Edited October 1, 2016 by unclescott58
