landman Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 (edited) I started this as a home for the phantom Pontiac V12 I just completed. It will be part of the FTB fleet. I began by enlarging the opening in the floor/frame to clear the engine. Also removed material from the front of the interior tub and a bit off the back of the dash. Will also have to modify the firewall. I would not want to be the guy doing a tune up on this. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
DumpyDan Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Great start, well start you are way into this one. I guess there is not as much room as I thought, but man this is killer ride
espo Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Very cool idea. I like the concept of a V-12 in a big Bonneville.
landman Posted February 18, 2017 Author Posted February 18, 2017 (edited) Dropped the front crossmember. Used the spacer that was across the front fenders and made a rear engine support out of it. It'll fit but I'll either have to make an access hatch on the dsh to reach the distributor or move it to the front of the engine. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
landman Posted February 18, 2017 Author Posted February 18, 2017 (edited) Started to"close" the opening I had made in the passenger compartment. There will be a bit of a doghouse but not as bad as I thought. After struggling with trying to build one using scrap styrene I ended up using a piece of packaging. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
disabled modeler Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 COOL...! I love these big old Pontiac cars anyway.
espo Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Great idea for the transmission tunnel. I was going to suggest trying a partial picnic spoon for a firewall behind the dash.
landman Posted February 19, 2017 Author Posted February 19, 2017 (edited) It'll be one of those three colors. Made some patterns and cut some real wood inlays for the bed bottom. And then I have a question about the kit's engine. The cars says Bonneville 455, the box says 400 cu.in v8 and it has three carbs. Now what is it? I thought they only made the 389 with three carbs. Is the 455 similar to the 400 visually? Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
espo Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 (edited) Your stained real wood looks great. More realistic than decals or trying to paint wood. Are you going to raise the rear bed wood section to be level with the forward floor section or just have it stepped ?? I like the center blue spoon, but it depends on how you are envisioning the car. The 389 - 400 -421 - 455 engines all look alike. The differences are internal with different bores and strokes. Edited February 19, 2017 by espo

Then I'll build the kit's engine with 1 four barrel and stick it in the engine collection as a 455. As far as color, I'm leaning towards the dark blue like the box image but with an interior different than red. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
landman Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 (edited) Painted the underside of the chassis. Installed the engine and hooked up the exhaust. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
landman Posted February 21, 2017 Author Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) Not a good night. Started on an air cleaner using some cigarette foil for the filter's texture. everything went ok until I realized I had one of the half round ribs upside down . The repair resulted in some smearing. I may be able to sand it down once the glue has cured. Added the battery cables and bent a radiator hose to fit. It is not in the picture as it is not installed yet. Then everything went to pot. Started painting the body and my rattle can ran out. The bad part is, I think it is discontinued. we'll see tomorrow when I bring it to the store. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
landman Posted February 22, 2017 Author Posted February 22, 2017 (edited) Since the paint I had used on the dark blue spoon ran out I used the green one. Photos are a bit grainy. Added the rad hose and the air cleaner. It turns out the air cleaner is too long and interferes with the cowl. Needs some sorting out. Installed the wood in the cargo bed. landman Posted February 28, 2017 Author Posted February 28, 2017 (edited) Started painting the interior. Tried my hand at flocking. It was an unmitigated disaster. Added a piece of bright metal to the edge of the step in the bed and another piece of wood to the console. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
espo Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Great idea on the molding. It give a much more finished look.
landman Posted March 2, 2017 Author Posted March 2, 2017 (edited) Working on the interior and the dash. It is amazing how bad it looks in close up. From a foot or two away, it looks great. Edited December 16, 2020 by landman
redneckrigger Posted March 2, 2017 Posted March 2, 2017 Great idea.................and so far, great building too! A Pontiac V-12................who woulda thunk???!!!
