MarkJ Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 Painted the body and was real pleased with the outcome, but I had to make a pattern on the hood and trunk area and free handing it with masking tape did not work. It wasn't symmetrical down the middle of the car. My wife is in to scrap booking so I asked her if she had any tips. She said to fold the masking in half make your curve and cut it folded over. Then when you open it back up it will be symmetrical.I have some frisket film but I need a French curve tool to make a nice smooth curve. This will make better sense when I post pictures of the finished body. One thing I found using the model master acryl is when you mask it and then remove the masking it does not leave a pattern or residue in the paint like when I used Tamiya rattle can paint.
ChrisBcritter Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Cool idea! Never understood why no one has ever made a '51. (except for a resin trans-kit) ITC did, but even a model masochist like me wouldn't want to try to fix it...
62rebel Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 whoa... Palmer didn't mess kits up as bad as that. I'm willing to give it room for age warpage... but those bodysides are abominable... looks like you actually HAVE to section it three or four scale inches to get it into proportion
AC Norton Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 ..color combo here is sweet....you just deceided for me how to trim mine...lol..........nice work,,,the Ace....
MarkJ Posted March 31, 2017 Author Posted March 31, 2017 ..color combo here is sweet....you just deceided for me how to trim mine...lol..........nice work,,,the Ace.... Thanks, Ace. I always like a red and black combo and I saw a picture of a 50 Ford with the outside color the same as this model with a red and black interior so I went with it..
MarkJ Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 I cleared the model yesterday with model master acryl gloss clear. I polished it out today and after I put future on it when its completely finished it should look pretty good.
MarkJ Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 I bare metal foiled it yesterday so it shouldn't be too long before its complete. Just need to assemble all the subassemblies, add the grille and bumpers and then decal and future.
espo Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Look forward to how your build turns out. How is the other Ford coming ??
MarkJ Posted April 6, 2017 Author Posted April 6, 2017 Look forward to how your build turns out. How is the other Ford coming ?? David, I was looking at the parts left to do a 49 convertible and some of the engine parts are missing. I might just glue the hood shut or put the modern ohv valve engine in it, that also came in the kit. The 50 kit was purchased at a model car show and the box was very old and not sealed.
tabsscale1 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Star models makes a 51 in resin http://www.resinrealm.net/Star/STAR Models/51_Club_Cpe.html
tabsscale1 Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 They also have a 2 door sedan http://www.resinrealm.net/Star/STAR Models/51_2dr_Sed-1.html

Or list what you need to finish the engine here on the forum. I'm sure there are many here that would have the parts you need. If you should consider the resin kits Todd Buckles mentioned, I bought the sedan kit from Steve at the Kansas City Swap meet a couple of years ago. The one I got actually looks better than the photo. The body is very smooth and well cast. The same for the other parts also. The proportions look correct to my eyes . I'll be building a copy of the '51 Ford I had years ago.

So that's a Cadillac engine. I was wondering what it was. That would make a cool sleeper model to make it totally box stock but open the hood and see the caddy mill sitting there. I'm feeling some inspiration coming on.
MarkJ Posted April 8, 2017 Author Posted April 8, 2017 Can't wait to see more-this is very cool !!!Thanks , Marty. Just a few more things to do.

That would make a cool sleeper model to make it totally box stock but open the hood and see the caddy mill sitting there. I'm feeling some inspiration coming on.Can't say for sure as to AMT's engine choice at the time but in the early '50's many Cadillac, Oldsmobile and even some Hemis found there way under the hood of Fords and others that didn't have a very big engine. They did make some great sleepers. At the time this kit was issued this engine was about as good of a Cadillac engine as could be found at that time. The original kit offered a 3x2 manifold or a super charger. The chrome tree had chrome Cadillac named valve covers and the blower and cover for the belt drive were also chromed. To my knowledge this has always been the engine option and the parts should be easy to find. Another thought if you stay with the flathead engine. AMT also had a '49 Mercury tudor sedan with a stock height roof. This also has been reissued a number of times. The kit had a stock engine, a flathead with chromed aluminum heads and a 3x2 manifold. The optional engine was a Chrysler big block (413-426) with a cross ram intake. All of these parts are easy to find. Of course as they say in the 1:1 world, "you can make anything fit into anything with a big enough hammer"

I'll just have to sit down and see what I have and go from there.
62rebel Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 The 49 lost the Cadillac script valve covers long ago if it ever had them. The 59 El Camino has an optional Cadillac engine with scripted valve covers. The 49 Merc had only the stock heads for a long time and gained a set of unplated Offenhauser heads some time back, along with a dual carb intake. The 49/50 Fords and the engines from the Merc will require some modifications to fit. What this series of kits needs is an easily adapted early Hemi.
62rebel Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 Which, of course, resides in the venerable 53 F100 kit..... Razor saw ready.
MarkJ Posted April 13, 2017 Author Posted April 13, 2017 Here is the link to more pictures if interested.
espo Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Did not know you were going for the Stock Car look. Turned out very nice.

They still might move it. We will see.I know what you mean about getting moved. It doesn't seem to happen as often as it used to. It is not uncommon to see a pickup or salt flat or drag car show up . I'm fine with it but there is areas set aside for these types of builds. I think that those areas could be expanded a little and that then they may be used more often by builders. I always check these other spots but there doesn't seem to be the activity that is seen here. I think that's to bad.
